This a game I found on another fourm. The rules are simple one person post a screen shot from google earth of the down town of a certain city and the others have to identify it. Please keep to cities that are fairly well known. For example no one wants to try to indenfy some city in the middle of nowhere.

I'll start:

Edit: blanked out lat and long

Its somewhere is USA because:
a. It is using a NASA image.
b. The 3D building thing is on, which only works in America.

KukriKhan

Tough to make out distinguishing features from 18,000 feet up.

It doesn't resemble the Los Angeles or SF areas, so I guessed NYC. Maybe Baltimore or Miami?

edit: Must be east-coast US, by the compass... about east-south-east. Maybe Charleston, South Carolina?

Lord Winter

None mentioned, Hint: it is in the Midwestern U.S.

Now back to game, I don't any cities in AMerica, so I am not going to even guess.

Warluster

D'know, somehwere the SPanish have been?

I'd say either somewhere in portugal,Mexico or somewhere in South America. But I can't pinpoint a city.

KukriKhan
04-16-2007, 02:00
I say "uncle". I've looked throughout Central and South American capitals, and southern Europe (thanks for the "Spanish clues"). Can't find that trident-shaped intersection, with a traffic circle at center. It screams Europe to me, though traffic circles are not unknown here.

Any more clues for us idiots?

scotchedpommes
04-16-2007, 04:23
I intentionally avoided capitals. The city was founded by the Spanish and is, to my
knowledge, the largest and most populous in its country.

Edit: I should have added that although the city in question is not one of this
particular nation's capital[i]s, [one constitutional, the other administrative] it is
understandably the capital of the largest of its nine administrative regions, or
departamentos.

Warluster
04-16-2007, 07:53

Sigurd

Santa Cruz, Bolivia

KukriKhan
04-16-2007, 12:50
Ahhh, now I see. When scanning Bolivia, I looked at La Paz. Is that a statue in the center of that traffic circle? Maybe of Simon Bolivar?

scotchedpommes
04-16-2007, 15:32
The oh-so-surprised Sigurd is correct. The city is Santa Cruz, (de la Sierra) in
Bolivia. It is a picture of the ring structure meeting in the centre of the city,
with the football stadium, the name of which I forget, visible in the corner.

Originally considered posting a picture including the river [Mamoré] but thought
that too easy. Anyway, well done - take it away, Sigurd.

Sigurd
04-16-2007, 15:54

Louis VI the Fat
04-16-2007, 17:37
The city is Santa Cruz de la Sierra in
Bolivia.

Originally considered posting a picture including the river Mamoré but thought
that too easy. Yeah you got that right. I would've instantly recognized the Mamoré riverbed and known it was Santa Cruz de la Sierra!

Pearl harbor?

Louis VI the Fat
04-18-2007, 15:43
Now I get it! It's a pearl, so the picture must be from a warm, tropical island where they have lots of pearls, waving palmtrees and girls in bikini placing flowers around your neck.

So let's say...Reykjavík, Iceland.

Sigurd

Louis VI the Fat
04-19-2007, 12:11
The city is not under the snow. It's not Stockholm. Not Denver either - although I did rename the file 'Denver' before uploading it to fool you all. ~;)

Hints:
-Try to guess the scale of the picture, figure out which zoom level you need.
-The clues for this city are in it's surroundings, the physical features of it's location.
-Up is north in the picture.

Sigurd
04-19-2007, 13:26
Those clouds looking like a coastline threw me off a little while.
But looking along that snow covered mountain range you can barely glimpse a few volcanoes. That put me in the right direction toward the American continent and its West coast. Searching South America I finally found myself in Chile…

I believe we are looking at Santiago.

Louis VI the Fat
04-19-2007, 13:44
Yes, Santiago de Chile it is!

Thought I'd try zooming out for a change, to let you all figure out the city through it's location, it's physical features.

Those are the snowcapped Andes mountains. Santiago is located in the 'Central Valley', a long valley not far from the coast. Sigurd, those clouds follow the coastline very closely, where they are stopped by the Andes, they were another clue.

What I meant was:

If you look at the picture there is a muddy river, almost gray. This gets me thinking of Asian rivers. There is also lots of dark red tiled houses with the occational blue roof. This is also pointing to the east.

A lot of small housing clustered together with no streets also points to a culture different from Europe.
I could suggest Ha Noi in Vietnam as I know there are lots of buildings there with dark red tiled roofs... but the Red River don't have a turn like that...
I guess I should look further...

Shanghai it is. If you stand on the right hand side of my picture, halfway down, this is your view:

Not Edinburough...

True there is a mound (x2) in the middle of that city too, but there is a castle on one of them and nothing to speak of on the other.

The party accessory is something you drink.

Looking at the picture I see multiple laned freeway, a baseball pitch and a special building...

there are not parkinglots enmasse around that building so a mall is out of the question. hmm, there are some parkinglots to the east and what I thought as a construction site to the north, could be a gigantic parkinglot...
I dont think I have seen that building before which means I have to search for it.

I think it is somewhere in the US

*starts looking*

KukriKhan
05-01-2007, 12:57
Mall of America, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.

Mostly a hunch on my part, based on all the heating/cooling ventwork on the roof of that big building. Odd that there was so little traffic on those highways, and almost-empty parking lots. Photo must have been taken shortly after sunrise on a Sunday, I speculate.

...a baseball pitch and a special building...

Blowing up the baseball diamond area confirmed he was right about that, making it either US or Japan (or possibly the Carribbean). The building size smelt american... probably Texan. Before I went to Dallas, I remembered hearing about the huge Mall of America (I haven't been there). Typed it into Google earth, and saw Sasaki's image.

The next city is also a country capital, and boasts the largest sports stadium on its continent. More clues available if necessary.

Wot, no ocean or river? LoL :laugh4:

Judging by the length of shadows cast, that place has many large buildings. I see a couple large blue squares that suggest outdoor pools, implying hotels. You left the "item of interest" icon hovering over what looks to be an arena, stadium, or convention center.

So: the downtown area of a major city, which has laid out its streets in grid pattern. My first inclination is a US city, like Las Vegas, Nevada - but I don't see LV's distinguishing landmark casinos, so that can't be right.

One clue, please.

Apparently some kind of planned community. I first thought: "Trailer Park", and sought out the 'world's largest' of those, but no luck yet.

It's striking how similar those structures are.

I remembered seeing one of those giant round things in Asia once... In New Dehli...
When searching through Google earth ... "nope this is not it".
We need a clue here.

Ok... I think the "park" around this suburban is actually a golf course.

Anyone up for googling a circular golf course/housing with some kind of mall in the middle?

I did but didn't get anything.

Cambodian Temples didn't check out, nor US trailer parks (all square or rectangular). Golf courses seems a stretch, but the image does look very well-landscaped, so maybe.

A tiny clue, please.

Three tiny clues: they are houses, that is a golf course, it is not in Asia.

I'm embarrassed to admit this was so challenging. I took all the clues and our guesses, and finally a light dawned...

retirement community, where old folks drive around in golf carts, instead of cars. Biggest US retirement magnets are Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California.

Using GoogleMap's "Find Business" feature, I asked for "Golf Course Community" while hovering about 60,000 feet above the US southwest, and finally discovered

Sun City, Arizona, US,

where that circular-housing pattern is repeated 5-6 times in the area. Population: about 40,000, median age: 75(!).

Well done. I was getting worried about my choice.

Anyone up for googling a circular golf course/housing with some kind of mall in the middle? This sooo made me sweat. :sweatdrop:
Because, if you google (http://images.google.fr/images?hl=fr&q=circular+housing&gbv=2) circular housing for Images this is your very first return:

Sun City Arizona is part of a chain of Del Webb communities across the Sun Belt of America. They usually have an age restriction, only age 55 and over are allowed to live there. There are a few dozen, in Texas, California, Florida an elsewhere. This is the original one. The architecture and design is very interesting, very much geared towards it's specific target. Many architecture or planology books feature it.
You can maybe try Wikipedia if you're as interested as me in this sort of thing and have never heard about it:

My own current hometown (Escondido) tried to duplicate Sun City's success in the 70's and early 80's, after the local vineyards and orchards failed. But they tried to do it on the cheap, buying those fields for pennies on the dollar, and building mobile home parks to attract retirement age folks.

They came, but they weren't the retired bankers, lawyers, doctors, etc that the city had hoped for. Instead they were rust-belt blue-collar workers with limited income.

So Escondido has given up that tactic, and is trying to re-acquire that land, to build high-end condos for the yuppies they hope will come to work in our (so far unbuilt) high-tech industrial area (ala Silicon Valley).

Anyway...

Our next city:

Tough. It looks like a very large city. Modern, affluent. The baseball stadiums mean it's not Europe. The street pattern looks Asian, not American.

Korea or Japan I'd say. I tried Seoul and Tokyo, but can't find it. My God, Tokyo is huge, what a city. I compared it at the same zoom level with Paris. We're Asterix' village, a Celtic village, by comparison...~

The future is Asian.

Do I treat those as guesses, or mere conversation?

KukriKhan

Hmmm, 16 hours later, I guess that was a dumb question. A guess is a guess:

Tokyo is correct. In that image, moving clock-wise, at 1 o'clock is the Tokyo Metro Gym (used in the 1964 Olympics); at 2: the Nat'l Olympic Stadium; at 3: Meiji Jingu Stadium (Baseball); and at 9: Meiji Shrine. The whole complex is about 3 km west of the Imperial Palace. (edit: nice insight on asian street patterns, btw)

Louis is certainly correct: Tokyo is Hu-u-uge.

Louis VI the Fat

So it is Tokyo after all...
I was maybe too busy being impressed to find those stadiums. I thought it might be Tokyo, but hadn't found it yet. It was somewhere in between a guess and conversation, I was not very clear. :embarassed:

Let's see what you all make of this:

Were those grounds built with an aerial view in mind, or was that accidental?

Versailles is correct, Stig.

Were those grounds built with an aerial view in mind, or was that accidental? It's all deliberate, it's smiling back at the Gods after we outdid them on earth. :balloon2:

My first impression, with that sun-baked look, is a Mediterranean locale.

My bet is Groningen, Holland...

Not too difficult when you leave Aerodata International Surveys in plain sight.
They are responsible for the maps in the Netherlands.
