Specifically the kind of challenges I want to see in MTW are more political angles. One of the great joys of RTS is the ability to march ever upwards on a well defined path to greater technology. Such paths can offer diversity of agriculture, the development of science and the rise of literature.
The mediaeval period was marked by the development of literary style and the early development of agricultural diversification and market-orientation of agricultural products. Doubtless any great RTS would include the use of root vegetables - particularly the parsnip. Did any of you know that the mediaeval carrot was purple?
Also from this new game I expect some form of disease element. The black death killed a third to one half of europe in this period. A good dose of the pox every so often wouldn't hurt anyone. Well.. it might hurt lots of people.
