Upon further reflection the Siege & Battle screens look great! The mounted knights in particular are excellent.

However the stratergy maps are less pleasing & don't appear to be up to the very high standard of the Shogun map. Perhaps its something to do with the grey colour? The "menu" bar & decorations just don't seem to fit with the map. What do you think?

These shots are great. Just put this game to the top of my most wanted list.

I think the strategy map is pretty good, I like the Castle on the hills. I wonder how much of it is placement art. By the looks of it hough it looks like they are quite away into production, I guess it helps when working off such a good engine.

well if you read the texts in the game captions it really looks like the game is still in development... and well, the game is still in development. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I wouldn't worry about any less professional polish from these screenshots, the current model is made for the devs to screw around with.

I wonder what those map icons that look like a table with a goblet on them are?

thx fatboy!

do we like the siege weapons or what?!?!
good to see that alliances are maybe really worth something
the spinster news are also good seems that a marriage dimension will be introduced

what do u guys think about the little squads of men behind the siege weapons engineers or what?
even destroyed castle walls seem to give a strategic dimension
one will have to repair the castle also interesting...hope that the stupid building destruction will be stopped
in all the screenshots it seems that the defenders are having a hard time
i like the hedges in the fields very authentic also the different buildings

keep up the good work CA

Anyone notice on some of those siege pictures? there appeares what looks like ramparts behind them there walls. Now if one could put units like archers there, that would be bonus. Theres a good exsample in one of the pictures,7th down, middle picture.

I agree with T -it's looking good.

Now to throw in some rumor...
Anyone notice the burning building in the background of one of the images? How about the flecks of black in the sky? Are these just low quality pics or do you think these might be ashes blowing in the wind?

Klen Sakurai
11-28-2001, 12:36
I didn't notice the burning buildings but I did notice the specks in the air.. I couldn't tell what those were... arrows, rocks?

Wow,

I canĀ“t wait for this game. I am very interested in historical games and this game will break all records. And in comparison to TW1 I can see a huge development - especially concerning siege - by keeping the old game principles. The maps (strategy and battlefield) look fantastic. Only one flaw: The soldiers on the battlefield look like string puppets. Where is the designer of the first TW1. Did you fired him?

And one matter: How comes that the name of the sarazen leader is Sir Ralph Talbot? Did he converted to the Islam?

Anssi Hakkinen

Let me say that these shots look awesome, especially since the game is only so early in the development stage (which is probably the source of the Talbot disparity http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif). It looks like these pics are still heavily based on the TW1 engine, as some pictures show the soldiers carrying Japanese flags around.

The map reminds me of Europa Universalis.

And the black flecks look an awful lot like smoke to me, don't know if we're talking about the same thing here...

Sometime in 2002, is the official line right now.

So 2002... x = 1 year

E(x) = (sqrt(x*25) * 4!) / 2PIE^2
E(x) = 6.1 (aprox)

By my highly sientific analysis I predict that the game will be released early spring 2007.

I hate to be negative...

But I think that the graphic looks worse than mongol-invasian...but then, this is just screens from a game thats not nearly finished.

And I really dont think that the english army will hold japanese battle banners in the finished game http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think they should work alot more on the graphicall side...right now it looks like shogun with iron dresses...

KumaRatta Yamamoto
11-30-2001, 03:21
Sputnik, if i heard correctly the game is far, far from finished.

But feel free to burst our balloon anytime http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Sputnik

Like I said: "not nearly finished"

I think this will be great when all is done.
One more thing.

Have they thought of using a more new graphic engine? That would be great, beacause I dont think you can alot better than shogun with the present engine...

Dark Phoenix
12-01-2001, 09:50
They are not going to make another engine as it has only been used for one game. They will tweak the engine to make it better but it is unrealistic to expect anything else, besides it s the best of its kind.

BTW on the subject of the banners you can see on some screenshots the use of different ones which look European.

Thank you! hehe looks like I did the right question in the right moment http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

The Strategy Map:
I suppose the map will become more detailed (more "provinces", and I'm sure the graphics will become much much better. I don't even know if this is a working model or just artwork ... anyway we can expect a very much better map than this. Looks like there will be at least 100 provinces...

The Battlemap:
It is for sure still heavily based in TW I. Perhaps these are just the same units as in TWI but with different graphics the maps and the models are new, sure, and the siege engines, of course, they are new, and look awesome.

But there are also major changes to TW needed wich we can't appreciate from a screenshot, as for example the tactical AI.

Look, I once edited the "AI_Formations.txt" file and forced the AI to always use a Roman Cohort formation, but he stupid machine would always break the formation and go to japanese tactics. In order to realistically have 100 different units and 3 or 4 different cultures, they will have to program different tactical AI's. Sarracin light infantry use different battle tactics than british knights. I don't think they have done much in direction at all, and this will be one of the things that will require more time, testing, programming, again testing , etc.

RPG:
We still don't have any screens from the RPG part of the game. This part will take a lot of time and resources, too.

When they have done all parts of the game, then they'll have to balance all parts with each other: again more tewting, programming, tesing, etc. ad nauseam.

Look, Pyro studios have been working 2 and a half years on their Praetorian game, that will be much like MTW, but without full campaign (just historical campaigns a la MI), and they've had a lot of trouble with the balancing and the graphics engine.

SYSTEM SPEC'S:
at least a 2 GHz CPU with 500 MB RAM and a Geforce 3, with cable modem? or even more?

I can't wait for this game to be released!!!!

Absolutely awesome. The hedgerow maps will present interesting obstacles/opportunities; the desert maps are haunting. The charging warhorses are fully extended, hooves off the ground - maybe they'll move faster than STW's fast-trot mode.

Some of the airborne black dots I can associate with missle debris, but what IS that black goo raining down in the hedgerows?

I meant to ask that, at a brief glance though it seems to be in all the provinces pretty much. I thought it looked a bit like a golden cannon, but that seemed stupid so...

come to htink of it it had better not be a cannon, the year was 1098.
