How about this announcement "Over 100 unique units that adopt historically accurate tactics." (from worthplaying's article)

Are we really talking about 100 different units (different sprite animations) or a lot of the same units with very small differences (in melee, defense etc...)?

How about historically accurate tactics? What do they really mean by this? What we're the tactics commonly used in those times?

i obviously can't tell you how the units are gonna pan out but on one screenshot britain had five different melee infantry units available and 2 ranged infantry units. that's seven for just one country without cav and siege

i can imagine just how much trouble 100 different types of sprite units would be, so it's probably the sort where each "kingdom" has teh same sprite with minor ability differences (perhaps Teutonic heavy cavalry have slightly better armor than Gaul heavy cav, and so on)

Too right. And in truth how many ways can you depict a man at arms in the scale we're talking about here. They all looked pretty similar. You have to wonder just how often somebody would brain one of their own people in a confused melee.

then again it could be like this:
1. man with sword
2. man with sword and shield
3. man with sword shield and armor

right there we have three potentially different "troop types", which could use the same sprite-base with minor addition. Of course, it's still just one main sort: a guy with a sword.

As far as I can see, it depends what they mean by 100 units.

I would assume catapults, siege channons etcs will counts as some.

Then u may have the likes of generals, priests etc this would make some more. What about famous people here as well, robin hood, Saladin, richard the Lionheart and Joan of Arc......

There are surposed to be 12 factions, that works out as 8.3 units per civilization that could be unique so far we know of
Teutonic Knights,
Highland Clansmen,
Saracen Infantry
Bedouin Camel Warriors.
add to this
english longbowmen,
archers,
crossbowmen,
peasants,
knights etc

It soon starts to mounts up.

I would guess that there will be some specific units per country and the rest could be common.

I dont know, what do u all think....

true true but when you say common units remember that unlike in shogun there will be 'common' units for western europe, 'common' units for eastern europe and even more for asia minor and northern africa and the mongols

Good point, they have clearly stated in their artwork (for example castles) they would use "the architectural styles of three different cultures: Islamic, Byzantine and Western European" (from the worthplaying article).

Maybe the same principal will be applied to soldiers sprites.

Here are some answers from the official site:

concerning different units: "Armies now comprise over 100 different unit types, many unique to their particular culture and period: the English can train longbow yeomanry, the Turks raise Janissary armies from among their Christian slaves, while the German Holy Roman Empire reaches the pinnacle of heavy gothic armoured knights. Each type represents different tactical opportunities for their commander"

concerning historically accurate tactics: " Different factions in Medieval Total WarTM demand different skills and approaches. Commanding the awe-inspiring German Holy Roman Empire demands a masterful balance between the velvet glove and the iron gauntlet; while taking the divided Spanish faction through the trials of the reconquista calls for a careful blend of naval and land based strategies. Whereas the Ottoman Turks must somehow bring their ferocious siege cannons to bear against the massive land wall of Constantinople ... tearing them down about the ears of their moribund Byzantine foe. This diversity of styles also applies to buildings along the tech tree, and to game presentation of the major factions and cultures."

This game is looking good!

somewhere in that article it also says that tactics will evolve over the 400 years but they probably mean they'll evolve through the use of different units
