View Full Version : Religious Military Orders

Religous military orders were very important in the crusades' history and even later...they will be quite surely mentioned in M: TW. They surely won't be a playable faction, but they will probably form a part of one faction...The Papal States maybe?

The three main religious orders were:

1) The Knight Hospitaller (or Order of St. John of Jerusalem) - An order of military monks, founded in 1048. Originally keepers of a hospital for the benefit of poor pilgrims to the Holy Land, the Hospitallers expanded to form a military organization for the defence of Christendom in the East. After being sent out of Jerusalem they went to Cyprus, then Rhodes, then Malta http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif and they stayed there until 1798, when Napoleon kicked them away. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/mad.gif

2) Knight Templar - A military and religious order, founded about 1118 for the protection of the Holy Sepulchre and pilgrims to the Holy Land. As may be gathered from Joinville's chronicle, it became very rich and powerful. In the end, whether through envy or some better motive, accusations of heresy and evil practices were laid against its members, and after many confessions of guilt had been extracted by torture or other means, the order to suppressed by command of the Pope in 1312.

3) Knight Teutonic (not religious) - German Fighting Order with main bases in Prussia, Hungary and Germany. Recruits almost exclusively from German Speaking peoples of Europe. (These maybe included in German states [?] or HRE)

Overview Of Templar History

The Knights Templar were without a doubt the single most influential and powerful of the religious military orders that sprang up as a result of the crusades. Although younger than their rivals "The Order of the Hospital," as a monastic institution, the Templars were the first to add a military face to monasticism.

In the 200 years of their existence and in the centuries that have elapsed since, much speculation and conjecture has been presented regarding this noble order of white mantled knights.

if you want to read into these monastic militant groups try this website. http://www.templarhistory.com

Well the templars seem to be included (from the "tour" part of the official site): "Added to this are the elite holy warriors of the fighting orders of the great faiths, such as the Templars and the Janissaries."

Altough I too am stuped as to how they will be added. I mean tey aren't one of the faction so mercenaries? or .........??? I do agree with Tera's suggestion... they will be a special unit for a certain faction. The Papal States is the obvious faction due to religious ties but how they will be used is still a mystery.
