I'm sure as you're all mighty men of the world that you've come across this great browser game, but I thought it might be fun to start a little high score group going in the Gameroom here.

Desktop Tower Defence (http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/)

or if the linky don't work, cut & paste this, http://www.handdrawngames.com/DesktopTD/

Play the game on Medium difficulty, & if you choose to submit your score, enter your Orgah name, & when it asks you if you'd like to put it in a group, enter 'Orgahs'.

The trick is to build a maze. You can see what others have done get their high scores through one of the menus.

Put 'Orgahs' in the group field after you submit your score, & it'll add you to the 'Orgahs' leaderboard automatically. Once the leaderboard gets a few more names in, I'll copy it into the top of the thread.

haha, yeah. Got the flying guys figured out, you just have to build your anti-air things in the right place.

Last setup I tried was real good against the little guys but the bosses pwned me every time. Guess I need more of the high damage pieces and a better maze.

Is there any use for the "stun" tower? I haven't used one yet.

They slow the little guys down.

And deal a shedload of damage. Downside is they have a small range & expensive to upgrade. I find the best place for them is on the point of a hairpin corner.

Got 7060 on the alternate mode where you start with 4k and build your maze. You get bonus points for starting the next level early, I racked up lots of those. Real funny seeing the effect of an icbm tower on the first few waves.

Still haven't figured out how to beat the level 49 bosses. Maybe if I hit the button so the fly over while the ground boss is still walking along. *goes to try* It worked. Got one of them. Because of the way I'd structured my maze the other got away though.

The typhoon towers seem by far the most valuable. One of the air towers is nice to have, the missile towers are nice early but weak late, can't see the point of the other two at all.

Cracked 6000. My main problem seems to be the spawn guys getting knocked through my maze and escaping:

http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/5516/834615in7.gif

The guys coming from the left come down the first alley and get knocked through that wall. Need to fix that I guess. Also think I let some planes through early on.

Got both the level 49 bosses though.

Blizzard towers are dead useful and cheap too.

8 typhoons :D

Fully upgraded squirt tower.

Redid my map so that when the spawns split they get knocked backwards instead of forwards. Worked out ok, but I slipped up and let some planes through again. Still don't see how those people break 8000.

5741 points and 18 lives baby. No one keeps 'em alive like me.

I need to push the waves earlier though. Wasn't till the last wave that any got more than halfway through my maze (excluding fliers).

Typhoons are great. Those frost towers are super cheap to upgrade. I find you really only need 2 level 4 or 5 anti-air for all the fliers, as long as your other defenses can help and aren't occupied.

CR

Sasaki Kojiro

Pellet Tower fully upgraded=400 damage
Typhoon Tower=320
ICBM Tower=256
Storm Tower=480
Blizzard Tower=40
Quake Tower=320

I'm gonna try a game with only upgraded Pellet towers to see if that's any better than a mix of the other towers.

Sasaki Kojiro
04-21-2007, 05:06
pellet towers fully upgraded are very slow. Typhoon tower will fire 4 times as often.

I may have found a use for the quake and icbm towers though.

Csargo
04-21-2007, 05:22
The Pellet Towers fully upgraded are have about 4x's the range so they can hit a target 4-5 times before it gets outta range.

HughTower
04-21-2007, 10:06
I believe the high scores are achieved by people who 'juggle' - opening & closing alternate routes around the maze.

My tiny mind cannot compute how one goes about doing this..

sapi
04-21-2007, 10:13
I don't do it, but understand the theory.

You sell one tower, giving the creeps a way through.

As they are about to take it, you replace it.

They then go down an alternate route, at which point you can sell the tower again, causing them to replot what is the fastest route and turn around.

Rinse and repeat for some unfulfilling 'fun'

Not a happy experience. As said in the rules, the more you sell your towers, the longer it takes. Much simpler to build a simple maze.

The theory seems to be to use bog standard pellet towers to funnel them along a long corridor of squirt towers, upgraded as much as possible. Then as they reach the light at the end of the extremely heavily defended tunnel, you double them back for a repeat dose. The tricky bit is to survive long enough to build that funnel, and situating your tunnel so it can defend against fliers as well.

Sasaki Kojiro
04-22-2007, 01:32
I'm guessing they send a whole bunch of enemies at once, thus minimizing the amount of times they have to sell and getting a lot of bonus points in the process.

Csargo
04-22-2007, 07:16
I'm guessing you send guys early to get a higher score.

PS Well done, Masy.
Try having a concept and playing to that concept. My idea was to simplify the maze in its early stages, having as sparse a funnel as I can make it that will channel everything through a series of tunnels in the centre, where I spammed Typhoon (Squirt) towers and Blizzard (Frost) towers that can take care of both land and air creepies. It's very effective at killing everything, hence my series of perfect scores (20 lives), but there's a limit to how quickly I can force them through. I've been experimenting with ICBMs (Darts), but it invariably weakens my air defence and one or both Level 49 bosses get through as a result.

Can someone else explain how they build up their mazes?

Sasaki Kojiro
05-01-2007, 21:13
You guys know you can see everyones mazes by clicking on their names, right?

I try and skip the air tower and instead build my maze so that I can ensure that the flyers are flying over at a time when no ground guys are going through the maze. Having blizzard towers in front of the flightpaths is almost necessary for beating the flying bosses. If you are going for an air tower, go for one fully upgraded rather than 2 almost. For hard you have to push that air tower real fast.

HughTower

I am unbelievably stupid.

Masy

Nicely done Sasaki. (*Grrs*)

Upon some minor testing, and looking at my maze again, I have come to the conclusion that Swarm Towers are not worth their weight in gold, and a larger number of Typhoon towers would be equally effective...I'm gonna stick with the darts though, they pwn most things at early levels (thus enabling one to press that magical 'n' button and get bonus points), and an ICBM with huge range is not to be sniffed at, even in the higher levels.

I will try and not to corrupt my study time with attempting an 8000+ score (that being said, I am in the library right now pretending to revise...), but I look forward to cracking it after the exams (pretty sad eh?).

PS, Anyone practice juggling in their mazes? I have been known to send a swarm boss back and forth a number of times in the past, but I mostly just speed build a maze and then upgrade.

I thought I had a good concept maze on the 4k challenge mode- it focused heavily on 5th tier bash tower in a common choke point covered by an icbm tower followed by alternating rows of PEs and squirters. It seemed to be more than a match for ground creeps- but was apparently weak on air defense, as the last round of flying creeps made a mockery of my defenses. :shame:

I actually have saw the mazes of the high scorers of the normal game. What they do is create a maze with two possible openings. One they cover with a simple pellet tower, When ground creeps get too close to the exit of one side, they sell the pellet tower and build one at the other exit forcing everything to go back through the mazes again. If you do this well, theoretically you can never lose to ground creeps and only need to build some swarm towers to take care of the air levels since your ground targetting turrets will be occupied with the trapped creeps.

I've been looking into the fun mode of that game with my flatmate, and was building a few 10k mazes.
The following maze was most successful so far, but of course there is probably a better one somewhere.
Note that currently nearly everything is a pellet tower. This is only for demonstration of a maze layout, not the actual maze setup. Feel free to use it, replacing the pellets with whatever towers you prefer and critique it.
https://img363.imageshack.us/img363/6582/mazeus0.jpg

Initially that maze had a empower+8swarm towers in the center, but after some review, I figured moving swarm to the sides and having 2 extra loops in the center might be better.
