The engine is the same wtf - of course they will be hotkeys or temporary groups (hotkeys is the name for 'g' for group, 'w' for wedge - doesn't really mean temporary groups - ctrl + number)

i thnk there should be a lot more pre-set formations for the whole army. i mean like the bird.
yet for regimentsof pike men why not the square. I know it wasnt used quite so much as the time of Napoleon and Wellington but still pikemen could benefit from this in defense against cavalry, yet also they could be at a disadvantage making them unable to move quickl and so come under artillery fire and take losses.

Hope this helps.

Vanya likes the idea of allowing each player to make their own custom formations that can be chosen from the menu...

You mean you don't have one of those remote mice that take voice commands? Way cool. You just say: 'Computer: Mouse North 500 Pixels' or 'Computer: Mouse North/Northwest 27 degrees 509 Pixels, Double-Click'. And you can watch the li'll pointer react to your every whim! Commanding an army this way in STW gives you even more 'feel' for the game as it allows you to immerse yourself fully into the realm...

Maybe, MTW will have voice actived commands too...

I like vanya's idea but to go one step further (or perhaps backwards?); how about give the player a list of possible formations and allow him to bind 3-4 of these to several keys. Instead of the standard square(close formation), wedge, and line we could choose from a list of possible options. I personally would like to see a variety of curved formations, some thicker lines at various angles and perhaps some cheerleader pyramids where your men stand on each others shoulders. The bird formation would be nice and how about non-static formations? By non-static I mean formations that change continuously like a rotating wheel or vibrating drum? I have no idea whether moving formations were used in history but just had a mental image of the chaos caused by the collision of two rotating groups.

just a couple more options would make me happy.

i think it was still in the days of stw that i suggested adding macros and scripting to the game. macros would allow one to not only set one's own formations in the game, but would allow one to pick one's army during setup. 7k game, alt + 7 + c = my cav army automatically selected in the foyer setup.

scripting and macros would be very useful for deployment on the field. and scripting in single player games could also be very useful.

also, why is it that in custom games the attacker has to accept the programmed formations and we cant make our own formations before hitting 'begin battle'. i've always found this quite annoying.

vanya's idea for voice commands may have been stated somewhat jokingly, but is actually quite brilliant. it would be the epitome of BEING a true taisho. you would issue orders via voice, just like a real taisho, and your 'men' would carry them out...or not ;) if incorporated with my idea of having 16 players in a single game where players commanded fewer units each, a voice command system would be truly superior to click and type.

now, if one wanted to get even slicker with commands in multi games, one could use the radar map to issue commands to one's team. you click on the teammate and then issue your orders via the radar map such that if you click on player A and then click on the radar map your input would then be tantamount to issueing an order and direction of attack to player A. voice commands would still be superior, but this other method would help at times.

scripting during battles could also be used, but this can get a bit tricky. you'd need a relative set of commands in the scripts. but i could easily see scripts that could determine where an enemy is and do certain actions automatically based on your scripting abilities. feignts would fall into this category. if you had confidence in your scripts you would not have to sit there and watch to make sure it happened, but could be already moving to do your next action based on that earlier scripted action.

the possibilities actually get quite staggering and i hope that CA continues to implement the kinds of innovations it's becoming noted for. i can already see things occurring with this game that you wont find in many or even any other multi war type game.

K.

Does this mean we will be able to create our own formations?

(from gamespot) "If you don't care for any of the premade formations or find that none of them are a viable choice in your situation, then you can create your own formation by selecting the units and then dragging the mouse accordingly."
