I frequently http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/redface.gif have my own cavalry rout through my own lines.

Sure this damages my morale, but in reality, mounted troops bursting through friendly would cause havoc and much injury.

The retreating should be better recreated, and troops bursting through friendly lines - especially mounted troops bursting through "closed" formations - should cause greater problems.

In reality this should probably be extended to any passing through of units by friendly troops, under any circumstances, and in any direction; I simply don't believe it was done much, except for extremely light skirmishers.

Comments welcomed.

The negative bonus is enough mate. I have seen an entire army fleeing before fighting from seing friendly units fleeing for their lives. Also cav routing. Routing from your own ranks like 1 units routing from the rest of the army is unrealistic cause the general would be pissed and kill em in most cases. They should flee from different sides mate of their own side(defender-attacker) but not through your army itself.

im guessing when routed units ran away they would avoid any units as they are in the way of safety, but historically i don't know.

Well basically I agree with you. Fleeing units should flee _around_ intact units by default.

Only when they can't, either as a result of poor deployment, unlucky terrain, or skill of the enemy should burst-throughs take place (unlike the present software depiction).

Then, and only then, should very bad things happen, at least for a short while.
