I am starting work on the faction banners and was wondering what symbol should be used to represent each faction (as opposed to representing each unit) and what colour should it be.

If anyone has a colour image of the faction symbol or can provide a link to one that would be helpful.

Below is the current list of the various factions, their symbol, and faction colour(s).

I'm still looking for a good symbol for the following factions:
High Elves
Wood Elves
Kislev
Ogres
Tomb Kings
Vampire Counts

I have different symbols than the ones descriped by Jubal_Barca's Dwarves (I plan to use an axe).

I don't want to use symbols you can colour yourself because they don't look that good when on a banner.

The symbol on the top of the pole is the Tomb King symbol. It's repeated in one way or another on every soldier and on every Tomb King building.

Banners dont neccessarily have to be the same as the faction symbol, most of the factions have a few different prominent symbols.

Well, as for High Elves, their colours (For the most part) tend to be white and blue, generally a white background with a blue foreground, though this can be flopped depending on the army, etc. One symbol that constantly re-appears on High Elves is the 12-pointed star, and though I am unsure of its significance, I see it all the time. Here's some quick samples I whipped up in photoshop to give you an example of what I mean:

Blue 12-Pointed Star (http://www.imagehangar.com/uploads/large/14742200_1178567211.jpg)

White 12-Pointed Star (http://www.imagehangar.com/uploads/large/65093000_1178567028.jpg)

Hope this helps :)

Edit: The symbol for the Empire is generally a flat-ended Maltese Cross, centered with a skull. An excellent is the symbol Warhammer Online is using for the Empire:

Thanks for the symbols. Since I'm just editing existing flags and past the symbol onto them I need a good quality symbol.

Here are some examples:

I've never seen that sort of symbol associated with dark elves, where did you get it? The bretonnian one is better but the shield looks out of place, ditch it and have just the lion, maybe with a sword in its hand. A more elaborate backgound too. The other banners on the brettonian flag dont have to be red and blue, brettonian heraldry is very colourful.

Though I can remove the shield adding a more elborate background is difficult because it's hard to get the shading right. If you wish to add a different background I could send you the .dss file.

Regarding the Dark Elf symbol I used google to find a Dark Elf winged skull. This was the best one I found (Warhammer symbols are hard to find since they are rarely used in the game). If you can find another version I can use that.

Bah! you just need to know where to look.... Here (http://us.games-workshop.com/games/warhammer/darkelves/extras/darkElfBanners/assets/darkelvescolorbanner2.pdf) and if you have to go with a winged skull there is even one there you could use. ;) as far as the bretonian one well what you chose could work but it is King Louen’s first shield, which he wore as a Knight Errant, but I think a Fleur De Lis on a quartered red/blue background would work better as a faction symbol..

If you want me to add a particular symbol you have to provide it. Also I've made a topic about what the different banners relate to (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=84875), to help banner creation.

That's great. Now all I need is a skull for the Vampire Counts and something for the Orcs.

Orcs aren't particularly unified. They aren't particularly unified with their closest friends. They only unify when they're on a Waaagh and even then they're pretty anarchic. So we can chose quite freely.

Orks Icon should be something along the lines of this
http://forums.relicnews.com/images/avatars/Ork-Banner.jpg

And there faction colour should be dark green, brown, red

Remember we aren't talking about "Orks"(40k), we are talking about "Orcs and Goblins" (thats their faction name in Warhammer fantasy.) "Orks" have different banners than "Orcs and Goblins".

I beg to differ. Even if they have different exact banners in the source books I'd say the spirit of them are the same. Which I think it is we should be aiming for. I think we should capture the feel of "Orcishness" rather than to treat Warhammer model examples as biblical cannon. Above all, playing this should be fun rather than correct. I think we all will agree on that.

I don't see fun and correct as mutually exclusive ... especially where things like banners are concerned. that is a compromise we might run into if the game mechanics throw a barrier at us, but this is something we have complete control over.

No reason why we can't have a banner. Locate something suitable in the refernce material, pick a good background colour, and paint a banner.

40K banners are not ideal if we have something that DOES come frpom the correct sourcebooks.

We've now got all the symbols required. However for copyright reasons we need our own versions of these symbols. Making the banners several colours is a non-copyright infringing way of making them unique.
