Can anyone give me a rundown of all the faction styles and their strengths compared to other factions of similiar style?

I understand that Macedon, Seleucia, and Ptolemaics (Epeiros too to some extent) each have different regionals and some unique units, but I can't tell what makes Macedon and especially the Ptolemaic recruit lists better than the Seleucids (which is just huge).

Also I don't understand what kind of advantages the Suromatae have over the other two nomad factions. Sauka gets decent infantry after reforms and Pahlava gets the super heavy catas......but the Suromatae.....yeah.

Pontos, Armenia, and Saba all have different styles but I have no clue how to play as them. They don't seem to have any unit advantages over their neighbors.

Nice exception would be the Getai, who are a breath of fresh air whenever you fight them or use them, seeing as they can fight so many neighbors with different tactics and have their own unique ones as well.

Rules:
Each player will play until his regent dies, whether that be 50 years or 50 days.
No reloading except for normal, "I have other things to do than playing this game" reasons. Setbacks are what make this game fun.
It is highly encouraged that at the end of each turn, the player post at least a brief summary of the events of their reign.
Normally in games like these there's a rule about not exploiting the AI. However, MMP2 is generally so difficult that I'm not too concerned about that. Do whatever you want, as far as I am concerned.
Ok... so first things first, what nation should we play?

I'd prefer to avoid a major nation but something larger than a OPM might be a good idea due to likelihood of instant-annexation in the beginning. I almost always play in Europe, but I'm open to anything.

After years and years of playing this game (the best strategy game of all time in my book!), I've still to find out what the "Elite" and "Disciplined" status of certain units means. For example, Byzantine Infantry is Disciplined. Elite units, such as knights, seem to be different, and there are several units which are both Disciplined and Elite (Janissary units, for example). What are the differences in the effect of these statuses?

For a while I thought they're two levels of the same quality (Elite>Disciplined>Standard, and maybe all these >Militia, or even >Mercenary). But the units which are both seem to contradict this theory.

In Froggy's unit guide I got the impression that it takes a routing Disciplined unit to affect another Disciplined unit's morale, e.g. Byzantine Infantry will not take a morale hit from routing friendly Spearmen, but will take one from routing friendly Kataphraktoi. Also, they're supposed to take a smaller morale hit from a routing or captured/killed general. More or less the same goes for Elite units. Are these the only effects of the Disciplined and Elite tags?

Froggy says about Nubian Spearmen (who are disciplined) "that they are easier to control and the death of your general or routing troops that are not disciplined or elite doesn’t bother them". Easier to control in what sense? Nubians do seem to maintain better unit cohesion than, say, Saracen Infantry (I always manage to get these guys separated into a huge blob of men milling around everywhere...). Is that what Froggy means?

Knights, on the other hand, are Impetuous and Elite. So maybe Disciplined is more about being the opposite of Impetuous: Easy to hold back from combat, easy to draw out of melee, easy to maneuver around.

What do you guys think? Have you made any general observations?

I am playing my first campaign in a while through XL as the English on Hard.

(It is now 1146AD and I have Scotland to Aquitaine, Brittany to Friesland - predictably - after some very sizeable conflicts with the French, who stole the initial status of western superpower)

Every pitched or well-matched battle so far has been resolved due to the death of a general or king, and many tense moments have manifested through these deaths also.

Of course, the effects of a leader's death on the field are rather well known, but as I played today I wondered what the subtle situational differences were.

For example, the Frenchman sent 3808 men against me under King Philippe I, with an average of 2 valour, against my 1830 with an average of 2 valour.

Prince Alfred was laughing somewhat when Philippe found himself caught between a shelf of sergeants five hundred metres long and a swarm of charging hobilars and knights.

Yet despite the fact that Philippe the elder was never seen again, along with one third of his army, the other two thirds did not seem influenced by the matter whatsoever, and their third-rate spearmen fought like foxhounds against my Men-at-arms.

In contrast, my valour two veteran swords routed with 80 men still in the unit when their 1st rank "general" was killed by an off chance.

What are the variables affecting the amount of havoc wrought on unit morale when a leader is killed or captured?

Is there a noted difference between not only Kings and Generals, but also Princes, and Generals of varying rank?
Is all unit valour owing to the general forfeited immediately at his death?
Is it better for the sake of momentary victory to capture rather than kill?
Is a fleeing general more persuasive than a dead one?

How effective is the assassination of a general before attacking an army?

I always enjoy reading not only paragraphs of guaranteed statistics but also in-game experiences of players, please!

----------

Now to press a rather different subject:

Knight of the Rose, because you have decided to create an AAR so uniquely rebellious, you must finish it, and give to it priority above all other things until it becomes a completed work.
Thank you.

I tried a few medieval games, but it keeps crashing to desktop randomly, so back to shogun it is.

I decided to modify unit stats for what I hope will be a more interesting game.

Yari ashigaru are modified to have the stats of yari samurai (same speed and still "peasants" though).
Yari samurai have 4 attack, 4 defense, and 4 morale added.

Since the AI normally builds tons of these, boosting them should make it more challenging :juggle2:

Added 4 morale to archers since the AI builds a lot of those and they often rout easy.
Increased the charge of cavalry units to compensate somewhat, and because I like a strong charge for cav units

Added 3 defense to heavy cav to help the AI daimyo's survive.

Added 3 attack and 3 defense to monk units to make them super scary :beam: They are almost like a 60 man ninja unit now.

Obviously, I won't train any ashis, yaris, monks, and heavy cav. The idea is to compensate for the AI's inability to tech up. This way I will have to tech up just to keep on their level.

Also added javelins to naginata infantry just for fun.

********************************************

Normally I disband all "non allowed" units at the start of these campaigns, but that would leave me with just 2 archers :sweatdrop:

I leave my spears as garrison, build 2 more archers and invade Higo, they retreat once the battle starts.

Very short on money...

For the next 5 years or so I build ports and get alliances. Get a horse dojo and train a couple cavalry archers. The rebels retreat from bungo and I seige the castle to the ground.

Alliances are providing a lot of income, but hojo and uesugi go to war. I back hojo, who dies next turn :wall:

Taking a shot at chikugo. They have 2 archers, 1 ya, and 1 ys. Here you see my cavalry taking frickin forever to cross the bridge. I rashly decide to charge them into a unit of archers (testing out the new charge value) but they only kill 20 before they get caught from behind and rout.

I whittle away at the defenders, sending a unit of archers out an then stopping it on the bridge as the infantry attacks. When I'm out of arrows I withdraw.

Not quite as planned, but I got the dangerous yari sam unit down to 10 men and the ashi unit down to 15.

Invading again, this time with my heir. CA gets over the bridge nicely this time and draws the archers away. Most of my archers get slaughtered by the remaining infantry and an archer unit that charges in while my cavalry is routing the other archer unit.

Close one :sweatdrop:

I get the legendary swordsman event, a VERY welcome sight.

I take chikuzen and have my first few units of no dachi. I send most of my men into buzen and the imagawa take the opportunity to invade chikugo with 240 archers to my 83.

Nice to be on the defending side of this bridge for once.

The enemy clumps its soldiers together, blocking their view and making them easy targets. I target the taisho unit and have my 20 man archer unit charge and retreat repeatedly so that the the enemy units keep skirmishing away and don't settle down to shoot. Things aren't looking so good though, I'm considering whether to withdraw again before I lose my archer unit.

Miraculous! I shoot down the enemy general and the whole army flees. I give chase, praying they don't rally.

Killed 104, lost 20. Gained a new 2 star taisho as well.

All of my allies cancel, putting a crimp on my income, but I have 5 ports and a couple richer provinces now.

*********

So far, excellent

Usually I am much farther after 10 years, but not having cheap spear units and having to respect how dangerous the yari sam are really slows you down.

They share the model with Argyraspides I noticed which means they have to be labeled a mercenary unit in order to be recruitable by Macedon which leads to rebel/merc standards...

Oh well I'll have to deal with it, no fix. Maybe I'll just remove them.
