EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Hi,
My name is Edwin and I work for Feral Interactive who ported Rome Total War to the Mac.
I have extracted all the EB 1.2 data out of the Windows installers and I have the mod working on the Mac I wanted to know who I should ask about permission to host (with full credit) a Mac download of the Mod for Mac users so they don't need to install it on the PC and copy the data across which is a little tricky for most people.
I would like to have this hosted on our downloads page (downloads.feralinteractive.com) so Mac fans can join in. The only edits I have done to the mod are to convert the video files from wmv to a Mac friendly format, after the edit I also edited descr_sm_factions.txt with the new file endings.
As a Rome fan I just want to make sure Mac players can access all the cool mods but I also want to make sure that everyone who made the mod gets the credits they deserve.
If someone could let me know who I should contact that would be great thanks!
Edwin

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
I will post your request in the internal forums (if another team member hasn't done so already yet). I expect it'll be fine with the rest of the team but it's tradition we let everyone take part in these kind of decisions.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
From the feedback so far: it seems like the rest of the team agrees, too. So as far as we are concerned you can go ahead and host a Mac version of the mod. A couple of things I/we think you should take into account however, are:
- The best thing to do would be to host a combined 1.1 & 1.2 version of the mod. It should also include the EB 1.2 fixes.
- We'd would like to get an URL from you we can use for a hyperlink on our website to refer Mac OSX users to your Mac version of the mod.
- We won't be able to provide any tech support of substance.
- And we think you should refer people to this forum thread too: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...or-Forum-Users

- Already done :) I only plan on hosting a single version for the Mac, 1.2 with all the patches.
- Once it is hosted I will ping you a url for you to link to
- I would not expect Mac specific support however Mac users will I am sure head to the forums and ask for mod specific help (issues or gamplay questions NOT related getting it to work). As the Mac and PC data structure and engine are idential any mod issues will usually be cross platform in nature. I understand not being able to help Mac people with Mac problems but I hope actual issues inside the mod you would treat the Mac users the same as Windows and offer them the same advice? I am happy to make this point clear to Mac users in the download so you don't get any help requests for Mac installation issues.
- Sure we can refer people to the forum rules page if you would like that is no problem at all.
I hope to get the Mac mod packaged up later this week will let you know how I progress.
Cheers,
Edwin

Yes we (and for that matter other fans) will be able to deal with “how do I get Marian legions” type of questions. However things like CTD's may prove more tricky as we can't really be sure that Feral's version of Rome Total War contains all the idiosyncrasies and bugs of the original...

It's actually a collection of FAQ-type threads that one.

I did my best to make sure that the Mac behaves like the PC (bugs and all) so mods would work with out any editing...
I tested a few mods like this one during development and it looked OK but then again I did not have time to complete any mods as I was a bit busy on the full game :)
I will try and keep a look out in the forums but if something Mac specific crops up feel free to bug me and I will see if I can get it fixed so the Mac and PC behave the same bugs and all. We don't officially support any mods but I will do my best to get them fixed in between other things.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hi Everyone,
My initial Mac version of the mod is now available.
Europa Barbarorum (1.3GB) - http://www.feralinteractive.com/down...Barbarorum.dmg
This link contains the DATA only, I also have written an installer script for this mod and a few others, as installing a mod on the mac involves making the data image read/write I recommend downloading the install/image modifier script.
http://www.feralinteractive.com/down...meModSetup.dmg
KNOWN ISSUES
Video files don't play correctly I think I need to remap a few more links in the desc text files so they have the new mov line endings. I will have a look at this when I have time but if someone solves it please let me know, I will gladly take your solution and make it available inside the mod image.
Thanks again to all the original modding team!

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Okay, I tried installing manually, automatically, and through getting it via .rar on a memory stick. Each time it goes to the Europa Barbarorum screen then CTD.
Would that be a mac specific problem, or other?
Thanks.

I would delete your install of the game and reinstall a vanilla install.
Delete all your preferences apart form your save game folder (~/Library/Preferences/Feral Interactive/Rome Total War/)
Run the installer after watching the video guide.
I know we have had loads of machines and so far you are the first CTD apart from one mac in the office and deleting the old prefs solved the issue.

Okay, I'll try reinstalling again.
Do you want be to only delete the contents of the folders in ~/Library/Preferences/Feral Interactive/Rome Total War/) or the whole folders?

This is Great!! One Question: Can I play using the Alex executable or the BI executable? Does it have night battles, retraining, etc.?

Alexander is not available on the Mac
I have not tested using the BI executable but it should work fine as BI & Rome code wise are extremely similar.

Thanks, Edwin. I'm now playing EB.
Something you might be interested to know, as I think this might be causing problems for others who have been crashing at the same spot:
It seems that whenever I install the rtw patch upon reinstalling the game, it results in the game CTD whenever I hit -mod:EB. As long as I do not install the patch, EB works fine. I don't really mind though, as the patch only seemed to fix problems my mac wasn't experiencing playing rtw.

That does seem bizarre did you get any errors pop up during the installer process? If you ever do it again and can reproduce it it would be great if you can send me the logs from the installer terminal window for me to have a look at. thanks for letting me know

No errors seem pop up during the installer process at all, oddly enough.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Ok, I realize this may be an awkward question, but I literally just but the Mac version of the game to try out your mod (happy to send you a proof of purchase), and I installed it and it works and all, but it always asks for the CD to be in the drive, which is rather annoying. Is there anything to be done about this?
-
Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Also, I notice that for some reason I can't play the mac version in resolution greater than 1980x1200, but when I play the PC version on my Boot Camp partition I can get the game to fill my iMac's entire screen (2560 x ????)...is that an EB issue or an RTW issue?
SOrry for all the questions, and thanks for any insight you can offer.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
:help: thx for the mod, it works great, but when i go on custom battles, every faction has the same units, the romans for example have soldiers for 10 different factions, is the same for all other factions, how can I fix this

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hi All,
Just a quick reminder for the fastest response please make sure you post questions in the right place.
Mac Retail Game issues - Feral Support Email
Mac Mod issues - Post in this thread (after searching the forums as someone on the PC might have had the same issue).
Mac / PC Mod issues - This forum and the EB website has loads of great information I suggest searching around before posting a question as the answer might already exist.
Just trying to keep this thread on topic and make sure everyone gets a response to their question quickly as I cannot be guaranteed to have time to drop into this thread every day :)

No, DVD protection is the system used on Mac Rome. We plan on launching our online store which will work on serial based activation later this year.

Try with FSAA off. I know the VRAM Usage for Mac and PC is different so the upper limit might be lower. If you contact support we can look into it further (for the retail game not the mod). I suspect the max resolution for the full game and the mod will be the same.

I don't know the expected behaviour as I spent most of my time making the installer and getting the mod to load and very little playing it :( I have no clue on how to fix it or what the PC version of the Mod does instead. I will see if I can have a look at it when I have time but anything you can do to help solve this for everyone else would be appreciated as right now I have a team of one working on the Mac installer and bugs :)

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
That'll be the Trivial Script, which switches between 2 different sets of a few files and is capable of editing a couple of settings. It does these things:
- Basic edits of preferences.txt
- Switch between various lighting settings and apply modesty patch if needed
- Switch between single- & multi- player versions of a few EB files like export_descr_units.txt Those files are found in EB/sp game edu backup/ and EB/mp game edu backup/ folders respectively.
- Launch the game with a number of configurable commandline parameters (e.g. -ne, -nm atop of -mod:eb)

Thanks, the mod was based off having all the options in the Windows installer NOT installed. I figured I would work out the rest later. You have a link for how it all works?
Edwin
-
Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
If you mean “do you know how it all works?” the answer is no. I didn't write the tool... The single/multiplayer thing is simply a matter of copying the right files.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Edwin,
Thanks for the replies. I take the hint and would post to the Feral support site for game (as opposed to mod) issues, but I just checked and there is no forum on the Feral site dedicated to Rome: Total War....Also, tried to start the game with FSAA turned completely off and the max resolution was still 1980x1200 as opposed to the full screen on my iMac...
Thanks again.
-
Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
If there is a preferences.txt file on the Mac, simply try to edit it by hand and set the resolution. That approach works on Windows with various “odd” resolutions; and it might just work on the Mac, too.

The Feral support is email based, we don't have forums right now. About your problem that sounds like a limit in the Mac version will have a look at why and see if it can be extended in the next patch. Usually if we block a resolution it is for good reason though.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hey guys. Thanks for all your hard work getting this mod worked up for RTW Mac. Saves me a lot of trouble maintaining a windows partition and switching back and forth.
I have a question regarding sound in the game. I'm having a wide variety of issues with SFX and music. There are no voice responses from any of the units (i.e. they don't identify themselves when clicked on, don't sound off formation orders, and don't make any noise when charging). Additionally, there is a really, really annoying "white noise" sound present on the strategic map, especially near coasts. This same white noise seems to occur when zoomed in near marching units, as well. I've gone through and checked the sound files, and they all seem to work fine outside EB. There is also no problem when playing vanilla RTW.
Any help you can give me regarding these issues would be greatly appreciated. I've looked around a bit, but not seen this question answered anywhere.

I need to investigate but I think this is down to supported audio formats in the sound library we used for Rome (Mac), this might improve in future patches as our sound library will get better and have wider support as it is used in more games.

would you be able to share what formats are currently supported? if it is in fact just a format issue, I could probably convert the sound files. looking at the vanilla sounds, it seems like they are in .dat. is this the only compatible format?
Thanks again, Edwin.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Ok, so I did some digging. The EB Data file does have preferences.txt in there and I did change the resolution to the max resolution on my iMac. It runs smoothly and beautifully at that resolution with all graphics option cranked to max....BUT, for some reason I cannot set it as the default resolution...I have to select it each time I boot up the game....also, the title and loading pages do not seem to expand to that resolution (only the strategy map and the battle map do)...maybe there is something in there that tells the game that the default resolution is 1920x1200?
Interestingly, when I boot up the game without the mod, it does not even offer me the 2560x1440 option, and I can find the prefs file that would allow me to modify this...
Any ideas on how to resolve?
Many thanks in advance! And again thanks for your efforts!

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Sorry, meant to say I CANNOT find the preferences.txt file in vanilla RTW to modify the resolution....

I think they are all in the same format but the encoder might make a slight change that makes it no longer work, a bit like an mp3 that plays in one app but not another. I don't have anything specific for you right now on why.

~/Library/Preferences/Feral Interactive/Rome Total War/Preferences.xml
open the file an edit the resolution information.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Thanks Edwin that works! The vanilla game now also offers 2560x1440x32 resolution. However, neither EB nor Vanilla allow me to keep that setting as the default. I bet it has something to do with the pop-up window hat appears wherein you enter the "-mod:eb" command..in that window, I do not have the option to pick 2560x1440...the highest it goes is 1980x1200....is there a way to increase available resolutions for that window or to make it check what the last resolution used in game was? Thanks again for your help.

If you disable that menu from appearing that might work, I think the game checks for resolutions it thinks are crazy and resets if it see's them as a security feature (some people try and play games on a 30" Apple display and a GMA950 mini), this was designed to reset dangerously high resolutions, I will see if we can push the limits on this for the next patch.

Edwin, Thank you so much for the support of mods! This is the final motivation I needed for buying the MAC version of Rome Total War!! Thanks again!!! Btw, do you plan on supporting more mods? (i.e., support the automated installation of mods for the Mac version).

Watch the video that comes with the image and watch how to run the installer. The RomeModSetup.command is the installer script so it should open terminal and run. If you still need help tell me where your computer does not match the video guide.

Anyone had success loading EB historical battles? The menu just comes up empty for me.
Shame, as the Historical Battles mod 2.0 ( http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=379935) looks v. tasty.
Many thanks Edwin for making RTR and EB available

Hello, I can seem to get EB to launch from BI. It works fine with RTW and saved games open with BI.
Is this to be expected? Or should I re-install?

I am not 100% sure what you are asking but I will try and give you some information
The mod has been checked on the Mac using Rome TW.
Rome BI might work but I have not tried it.
If you get EB running using BI save games should also work.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Bi and RTW are compatible without handling with files (you won't get the BI abilities though, 'just' the improved CAI) but be aware that this does not count for RTW/BI and the Alexander expansion!

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
First of all: Thanx a VERY lot, Edwin, to make it work on the mac, that is GREAT!! Couldn't believe my eyes - Feral Folks, you are my heroes!
And thanx for the mods too, of course, to all of those, who made them!
Something one may need to know when playing the german version of the game: with enabling the mods (-mod:EB, -mod:RTRPE) one needs to change the language settings in the startup menu from automatic or german to english, otherwise the game crashes to desktop. when changing to english language, everything works fine.
(almost) SOLVED SFX issue:
Installed EB and RTR manually over an unpatched 1.0 RTW Gold, everything worked fine but of the sfx within the campaign map: same issue like Seoinin described above, strange sounds within the stratmap, no voices at battle, stratmap voices very low. that occurred with both mods EB and RTRPE.
Patched the game to 1.1 (after the modinstall) and now the weird stratmap-noise is totally gone. voiceless battle remains, strategic map voices are still very low, almost unhearable even when 100% in audio menu, but I don't mind that low strat voices, because I don't like ancient roman generals to repeat with "sir"... in battle of course it would be something, when my men repeat in latin, but anyway the game is running smooth now, great pleasure!
Thanx again for that port to the mac, greez out of vienna, austria

Basically I cannot start a new EB campaign from the BI.app. It keeps asking me to make a selection when I click the option.
However BI opens saved games (that were started on RTW).

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hello,
Having problems loading EB
2 weeks ago I successfully downloaded EB for mac and played many hours.
last week, when I went through the normal steps to load EB, Vanilla RTW loaded instead.
even though EB files show up on my computer, I can't load anything but RTW.
I decided to put the EB download in the trash and start from scratch, downloading from the site all over again.
when i get to the point of clicking on Rome data script (from rome mod setup download). it asks me if i am administrator and if i have 20GB of space.... i say yes. but the script says error i am not an administrator.
this is my home computer and this was not an issue 2 weeks ago when i successfully downloaded and played EB .
any ideas?
thanks

Cut and paste the contents of the terminal script that has the error message it might have some clues.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Hi Everyone,
Enjoying this on 17-inch MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.4 2.66GHz Intel Core i7, but am having a couple issues and wonder if anyone can help...
Still experiencing CTD after some large battles.
During battles in which my defending armies are besieged and sally, the battle sometimes won't complete even if all enemies are killed/driven off. The battle screen remains empty, and no dialog window ever pops up to end the battle... only way out is to quit with a draw and losses, city remains besieged.
Regarding patches, are the EB 1.2 patches recommended for Mac version? And, is it necessary to have a patched version of RTW 1.5 before install, as it is with EB for PC? If so, can anyone recommend a reliable place to download?
Many thanks in advance,
BT

The Mac version of EB is v1.2 with all patches already installed.
The Mac version of RTW is version 1.5/1.6 final patched versions of the PC game.
You should not need to upgrade either version. However make sure you have upgraded your game to the latest version currently 1.1.1.
Cheers,
Edwin

Awesome!! How do I play EB on the BI executable, though? I've heard a number of people say different things, but I'm not sure I understand how to do it on my MacBook.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Edwin, I maintain an installer which patches BI so it can run with EB. Most of the hard work is done in a .NET 2.0 dll which should be directly portable to Mono. There is also an NSIS installer script, which would need to be translated into whatever Mac uses an installer. There are very few files copied unpacked from the installer, as that would bloat it beyond belief. PM me if you're interested in knowing more about it.

Re: Mac Version - Mac version created & hosting organised, who do I ask for permissio
Thanks, Edwin! Thanks especially for creating the Mod... it's the only reason I even bought RTW again (formerly had it for PC).
I reloaded everything, and upgraded to 1.1.1, but am still having the same curious problem and wonder if you think it could be a bug...
During battles in which my defending armies are besieged (either in a city or fort) and sally, the battle sometimes won't complete even if all enemies are killed/driven off. The battle screen remains empty, and no dialog window ever pops up to "Continue" or "End" the battle... the only way out is to quit with a draw and troop losses, and the city/fort remains besieged.
Cheers,
Ben

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Could it be that a single enemy soldier is stuck behind a tree, so he cannot leave the battlefield?
This is why I enable the timer, even though I find it unrealistic.

This is a good workaround and the stuck soldier is a distinct possibility of why you are having the issue.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Unfortunately, no... I've had battles on fields completely devoid of trees and it still happens. It will also, occasionally, affect the battle that immediately follows at the same location.
Is there a command I can enter in RomeShell to force victory in such instances? I've looked around online, but can only find codes to use before a battle begins.
Thanks again,
Ben

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
I followed the instructions in the video - which was super helpful for a borderline technophobe like me, but the game won't load.
it's telling me that there is an invalid installation and the file "data:fmv:rome_title.mov" is missing and that I need to re-install the game. I tried that, and it repeated the problem.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Might get past that by disabling movies (-nm).

It sounds like your application is not in the same location as your data image but I could be wrong.

Edwin - that's exactly what my problem was. Thanks for the help, and thanks again for making my favorite game/mod compatible with my mac.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Edwin,
Already knew this was happening, (its tyler from fb hehe), but quick question. Every file is identical apart from the .mov files and corresponding paths correct? and if so, that should mean any issue i have with slight tweaks leading to CTDs are because of my own error in making the tweaks.

Correct while I am tweaking I create a copy of the entire mod dmg so I have my tweaked version and the vanilla version means I can work out if a crash was my tweak or not. This method is pretty handy although it does use up a fair bit of HD space. I am kind of busy on Xmas titles for Feral right now but I plan on giving the mods an update once the Xmas rush is over.

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Ok, awesome. Im in the process of trying to tweak MarcusCamillius's Roman leadership mod for eb to include Greek Leadership as well...unfortunately, my last attempt ended in a perpetual loading splash screen...im not exactly sure what went wrong there, any thoughts?

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Dear Edwin,
Sorry to be reposting, but I'm very intrigued about something that you said earlier regarding the BI executable--that it can be used with EB on a Mac.

Ive tried, the only thing that doesnt work is the campaign, but you can still load saved games. You also would need to add BI features into the edu files if u wanted them. again, under advanced option add " -mod:eb "when running BI, (without the quotes) and you should be good to go...idk how to make custom battles and new campaigns work, but im positive the BI features can be used on an existing campaign

Ok, thanks. Do you happen to know into which files I would have to paste, and what I would be inserting?

well, if you want hoplites to have shield wall for example, you need to open export_descr_units and add next to the units formation line (should be next to square) shield_wall. so it should read .......square, shield_wall
and now the unit has shield wall capability. havent tried it with shiltrom or anything, or many for other units, but it def works for hoplites...i just wouldnt recommend giving every unit shield wall

well, i give hoplites shield wall to better show their historical formation...tight, lots of pushing, shoulder to shoulder. its also not as easy to break through like the standard formation for hoplites are, so i gave all hoplites shield wall ability. giving it to too many units would become ahistorical, and also it might make it a little too easy

Re: EB for Macintosh - questions & support thread
Thanks a bunch! One more thing, though...when using the BI or the RTW .exe, I get a CTD whenever I try to open the recruitment, mercenary recruitment, or unit retraining scrolls in Taras (the city or the region). Any idea which file would have to be messed up to cause this?
