I've downloaded off steam Total War Shogun II. I run it, it tells me that it is copyrighted and then that it's no longer working. I noticed there was also an option to download Total War: Shogun II TEd. Not sure what that is, but do I need to download that as well???
Nerdy, TEd is a battlefield editor, so you don't need that to play the game. Can you provide the exact wording of the message(s) you are getting?
Total War: Shogun II has stopped responding. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
First I get an option whether to use Direct X 9 ot 11. Whichever one I chose all I get is a black screen with the copyright information half size in the centre and a normal white cursor, and after around 20 seconds I get the "not responding" message. I've tried opening it through steam, using the desktop icon and inserting both disks to play but it always happens the same.

From where I'm standing, not enough info. Is NMK able to play other DX__ games without problems? Then it's probably the Steam install of SII. Does his system crash for pretty much everything? Then it's clearly his system.
There's some detail there about when it freezes, but very little about the environment.

I used to have the same problem, and this helped me:
(1) Exit STEAM.
(2) Go to STEAM's directory, find Steam.exe, right click, and Run as Administrator.
