Good alternative to the iPod?
I just broke my iPod, and I'm in the market for a new mp3 player. I'm not a big fan of itunes so I'd rather not get another ipod, does anyone know of any other good mp3 players they could suggest? I checked out the Zen by Creative that was mentioned in a similar thread a while back and the new models got bad customer ratings, so it seems like that one's no longer an option.
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
What are you looking for? Music player only? Any other features? Capacity?
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
Recently bought a Sansa clip+; mp3, FM, slot-radio. Price was low for 2G capacity (expandable to 16G/32G with Flash memory)
Sound is good once you replace the included earphones. FM reception is not stellar all the time but usually good enough for continuous listening. It's not an "envy item" but does the job :)

I'd like one with plenty of space; my old ipod was 8gb and it was pretty much full. I don't care for apps too much, I just want a dedicated mp3 player. I prefer buttons over a touch screen because it's easier to switch songs that way.
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
Maybe something along these lines? It only has 8GB internal memory, but accepts microSD cards to add up to 16GB more. It seems to have decent reviews and is at a reasonable price.
You could even go for their 2GB model and add a 16GB card to it for less than the 8GB model itself costs....

Yea that one looks great, thanks. I especially like the price.
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
Thank you Xiahou. The link is exactly what I should have included.
I went 2G; I figured 1 card would just about hold my entire music collection. I invested in a card reader/writer as well to allow future flexibility.
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
I got the Sansa Fuse, one step up from the Clip (it can play photos/video) and it has served me well. I like that you can add a microSD card to expand the storage. :2thumbsup:
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
If you guys end up getting one of these, please let us know how it works out for you.
Re: Good alternative to the iPod?
I've had the Sansa Clip+ (2G) for a few months.
Pretty easy to use: drag drop to transfer files; you can get fancy I suppose with playlists loaded from Windows Media or the included Rhapsody player (never bothered myself)
The included Rhapsody player seems to be some form of trial ware; free for x amount of time with a fee afterwards; waste of space imho.
Almost all my music is in FLAC format and the player has no trouble at all with it, so I'm happy :) The FM reception can be a bit dodgy at times; apparently the extension for the earbuds acts as your antenna so switching the incl. earbuds out may have had something to do with it. I have yet to add a card to it; 2G seems to be fine. When I go out and get a 16G card I'll report back on ease of use.
I am confused about the microSD cards; the exact same card I've seen priced from $20 - $75 (16G); shopping around will pay-off.
edit: added a 16G card and no problem whatsoever. Just expands the observable space available and drag/drop more files :)
