    I'll be in this one. But it looks complicated. As such, I will probably be totally useless except as yet another body the mafia have to destroy.

    They usually range from 2 weeks to a month. This one probably will lean to the longer side.

    I'd like to add that it's ok to miss a day or 3 if RL interferes. If you're going to be afk a bit longer, just pm me when the time has come.

    Thanks for the welcome Andres.

    Since you opened the floodgate for me, let me play the role of the shinoobie and ask the dumb question, thus exposing my ignorance of the mafia-style game.

    What is the goal of the game? My guess: 1) for the ninjas, to avoid the samurai, eliminate the champions and kill Shingen; 2) for the champions/samurai, indentify and kill (lynch) the ninja assassins to protect their beloved Shingen. Is this essentially it? Is it a team game, individual goals or a combination? I gather the special roles will have powers that will be explained to them at the beginning of the game.

    Can you veteran knowdachi help me out here or point me a good thread that explains/demonstrates the game?

    For the most part, you have it down.

    Mafia in its most basic form is an informed minority vs. an uninformed majority. The minority is the Mafia, in this case the ninjas, while the majority is the Town (the samurai). Now, this is not a basic game, as the mafia/ninjas have specific targets other than simply "kill everybody".

    Usually, the town/samurai have to do some coordinated detective work (going over posts in the thread, using their host-given powers, etc) in order to kill their adversaries.

    I think that sums it up, although I'm sure I wasn't clear/missed something.

    1) and 2) are correct.

    Mafia is indeed a team game; the problem for the samurai ("townies") however is that they don't know who the ninja ("mafiosi") are, so they don't know who is on their team and who is not.

    Special roles will have special abilities. They will know their abilities at the start of the game. They can reveal while they are alive if they want to.

    Those abilities can be one of these (or a combination of):

    - investigate/watch : each night, the player can investigate/watch one or more other player(s) and will find out if he is ninja or not/what he did that night;
    - protection: each night, the player can protect one or more other player(s);
    - vigilante: each night, the player can kill another player - the vigilante is a killer on the town's side;
    - roleblocking : each night, the player can choose another player and that player won't be able to use his night ability (if he/she has one)

    I've always found this thing to be a good explanation of basic mafia games. Not everything it says matches the way this particular game is being played, but it covers the foundations pretty well. The Mafia FAQ in the Gameroom is also useful, particularly when you start seeing people using strange acronyms like the ever-popular WIFOM.

    Andres/GH, thanks. That helps.

    One more question: communications with other players regarding investigations and such is done via PM (within the game rules) or the game thread or both?

    The pro town roles cannot reveal themselves nor their night action results in private; they have to do that in public.

    After they have revealed in public, they can privately discuss about what they have revealed in public.

    Which reminds me that new folks should pay attention to the Mafia Rules. Most of those posted are drivel, but there are still many that are worth reading, particularly #1:

    Rule 1 : Sasaki is always guilty
    Rule 7: Don't trust anyone.
    Rule 8: When in doubt, fake some PMs.
    Rule 9: Always trust the person you most suspect.
    Rule 11: Claim real pms are fake, and fake pms are real. Then distract the town with a new lynch target.
    Rule 12: Convince people that you are innocent, even if you are.
    Rule 28: Paranoia is good - finally deciding to trust anyone is bad.....
    Rule 31: Lynch Sasaki. Just in case.
    Rule 41: If Mafioso, build up a fake role from the onset. Reveal at appropriate moment.
    Rule 45. If mafia, don't kill Sasaki. He's probably on your side, somehow.
    Rule 57: Whoever is organising the secret town discussion group, is always guilty
    Rule 60: Always use invisible mode
    Rule 65. Never assume the new player is harmless...
    Rule 92: No matter how bad things are looking for your team, never give up.
    Rule 100: Have fun
