Coats of Arms
Ahem. In keeping with econ's spirit of just popping in as if we'd never been gone, I'd like to give you all the opportunity to pester me for coats of arms again, if you would like them.
For those of you who I've played with in LotR and to a lesser extent KotR, it should all be business as usual: throw your crazy ideas my way and I shall try to make you happy
For those of you who are new, I like designing coats of arms for the various factions and/or individuals in these games. Doing so is mostly a sticking together of already existing parts of coats of arms, changing a few colours around, pretending I did a lot of work and having a reasonably large and completely disorganised thread. For an idea of how it worked (well...mostly worked) in LotR have a look at this thread: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=104139
Now to get your inspirations up, I would suggest the following links:
Basically, images in .SVG format are easiest to work with and edit. Other things are possible, and I'm happy for you to throw whatever you want at me, but I make no promises.
Now for our very first KotF Coat of Arms:

The idea is the larger one can be used wherever, and the smaller can go in your signature. So fire away if you want.
At the risk of cluttering this up already, I've come up with some templates:
First of all, here are the historic Arms for our four Houses and the royal family. I quite like these actually, they are nice and varied.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Capetins
Burgundy
Brittany
Aquitaine
Lorraine
I suppose the best way of combining these with something more personal would be to use them as a subshield, ie:
As for ranks, pretty much as below (ignore the different sizes for now):
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
King
Heir
Prince
Duke
Count
Baron
Knight
Finally, for some basic shapes, just because most of our stuff has been geometrically similar so far:

When I found out you were returning I began to feel a little of what AG has been feeling with the return of the rest of the prominent original KOTR guys, like the whole gang is back.
King Baldwin the Tyrant, King of Jerusalem, Warden of the Holy Sepulchre, Slayer of Sultans in the Crusades Hotseat (new write-up here and previous write-up here) Methodios Tagaris, Caesar and Rebelin LotR Mexica Sunrise: An AztecAAR
Please be aware that if you are using the coats of arms in your signature, they need to conform to Org rules. The bit about signatures is as follows:
The rules for signature pictures are:
* 10,240 bytes max.
* no sound.
* max 500 pixels wide, max 150 pixels high.
I'm not too concerned about the file size aspect, but all images used in sigs should at a minimum be run through a web optimization program to compress them down as much as possible. Using raw .png files is not a good method. In addition, the dimensions (500x150 max) do generally need to be complied with, particularly the height. Lots of extra high signatures can make threads difficult to read.

Re: Coats of Arms
thanks TC, I wasn't sure what the rules were exactly anymore. I will try to cut them down manually, and prbly turn them into .GIFs. The only disadvantage of that is that I have to add the .orgs background colour manually, but at least that justifies my claim to actually doing some work :P
Thanks for the welcome back guys. Econ, I won't sign up at this stage. I dropped out of LotR in an annoying time and way for most involved because of some computer issues and because I just didn't have the energy for it anymore. I want to avoid committing myself again without being sure I'll remain motivated this time round.

Re: Coats of Arms
Hypothetically, it could look like this:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Arms of Brittany in the middle, ducal crown on top. Arms of the Capetins in the lower right to symbolize allegiance to the king. Celtic Dragon in the upper left to symbolize the celtic heritage (and independece) of Brittany. Waves in between for water, as Brittany is surrounded by ocean. Just me playing around a bit, with little to go on :P

Re: Coats of Arms
yeah, i was thinking yesterday actually whether we wanted to get into the real Dukes and their names and arms. Its something I'll leave up to the players. Apart from anything else, unless i am mistaken, Brittany was quite independant of the French Crown at the date we start playing.
edit: additionally, real life arms tended to be far more simple than the ones I end up making. In a way, I find that makes them more asthetically pleasing, but on the other hand, for RP and immersion purposes, players seem to like to fit a lot of symbology in.

Tristan:
not convinced about the sword-wheat/sickle/fork combo. perhaps its just a colour issue, but something doesnt look quite right yet. that said i didnt want to go too wild without some feedback:

That looks almost like what I expected... Perhaps putting the wheat ear and sword in gold/yellow with the sword over the the wheat.
