Thread: Europa Gallorum - A Celtic Ethnicity Guide (Work in Progress)

Default Europa Gallorum - A Celtic Ethnicity Guide (Work in Progress)

Delving (not so) deeply into the export_descr_traits file, I decided to create a brief guide to all Celtic ethnicities for my Aedui game. It lists mainly what kind of traits they are likely to get when adopted, coming of age or being offered for marriage.

Notice that ALL traits are always linked to a character's individual talent. A "Sharp" Allobroge might have a better chance of also being a good trader, but a dull Brigante only has an improved chance for the negative side effects, namely being a bad cavalry commander. Both might overcome their early barriers and become sharp administrators or warriors, but certain ethnicities have a better chance of reaching it than others - Thus this guide.

You might get a good idea already by the description of each ethnicity: e.g. the Saluvii can be better suited to trading than the Remi, but precisely how much this is translated into game effects is better analyzed by looking at the file directly.

Keep in mind that all these modifiers apply equally to all Celtic factions in the game: the Casse, the Arverni and the Aedui. Hopefully, EBII will include the Boii or the Belgae, for the simple reason that Celts are fun!

Europa Gallorum - A Celtic Ethnicity Guide

Green denotes a Gallic Tribe (both Cisalpine and Transalpine).
Blue denotes a British or Hibernian Tribe.
    Turquoise denotes an Iberian Tribe.
Red denotes a misc. one (Central European, Gallo-Thracian or Galatian)

    Aedui

    Description

This man is a member of the Aedui (Followers of Aedos - Gallic Sun Deity), who like most transalpine Gauls place a great deal of importance on the education of their noble class. The Aedui take great pride in their proto-democratic systems of government and excel at Diplomacy, Politics and Administration. This does not mean the Aedui lack skilled military commanders, just that command education is not regarded as a priority; regarding their economic and political focus being a more sophisticated and cultured approach to the world. The down side of course is that with all these politically astute nobles, there can be great political instability at home as nobles position themselves, form dissenting factions, etc to try and better their own positions within the community. The Aedui are at the centre of worship for the Gallic Horse Goddess Epona, and as such, this man is likely to be experienced in all things equestrian (cavalry).

    Summary:

To have an Aedui character offered for marriage or adoption, the player must first own the settlement of Bibracte on the map - Their historical home.

Alternatively, he must play as the Aedui. All Aedui characters receive a +1 Influence bonus.

    Positives:

Sharp Aedui are more likely to become better managers and taxmen. Charismatic Aedui are more likely to get druidic traits (boosting overall character stats, but focused on management and influence) and to be better administrators. Vigorous Aedui are more likely to become druids, to be skilled cavalry commanders, and overall better administrators.

    Negatives:

Dull Aedui are more likely to become liars. Disloyal Aedui have an increased chance of being even more disloyal and getting the related traits.

    Commentary:

Aedui can be superb administrators and excellent cavalry commanders, thus getting an overall bonus emphasized on management but also not neglecting combat. While they may not be as combat oriented as the Volcae and such, they have fewer weaknesses, but they can become exceptionally disloyal if given the chance.

    Aegosage

    Description:

This man is a member of the Aegosages (Combat Seekers) a tribe of the Volcae (Wolves - Raiders) that fought and sacked their way through the Getae and then Thracians to settle at Tylis to create a kingdom founded on the slavery of the local population. The Trogmi enjoy a reputation for pillage and slaughter. Many Aegosages have as a consequence, been hired for service in foreign armies and this man is likely to benefit from this collective experience.

    Summary:

To have an Aegosage character offered for marriage or adoption, the player must first own the settlement of Tylis on the map - Their historical home.

    Positives:

Sharp Aegosage characters are more likely to be "Good Tacticians" and "Good Leaders", increasing their command star count. Charismatic Aegosage idem, but can also be better attackers. Vigorous Aegosage are more likely to be better leaders, to get "Brave Celt" traits ("Kuaroas" and such) which increase troop morale, to be energetic, better attackers and finally warmongers.

    Negatives:

Dull Aegosage characters are worse administrators, Uncharismatic Aegosage are worse traders, Pessimistic Aegosage are more likely to get "Bloodthirsty" traits (such as "axebitten") which decrease command but increase troop morale and are more likely to be bored or to become "Agitators" (increasing influence). Selfish and Disloyal Aegosage are more likely to become bored and much more likely to get even more disloyal.

    Commentary:

Based on the traits description laid above, Aegosage are generally expected to be good generals and bad administrators. Expect them to be a hot-blooded type though!

    Allobroges

    Description:

This man is a member of the Allobroges (Aliens - Having migrated to Gaul with the Arverni), who like most transalpine Gauls, place much weight on the education of their noble class. The Allobroges are not as scholarly as their northern cousins but they invest considerable time and expense to learn the finer points of trade and administration. This approach has however, been to a slight detriment to the study of War. This does not mean the Allobroges lack skilled Military Commanders, but that command education is less important to them as they try and advance their standing in the community through the wealth gained from trade and tolls. Due to the very lucrative trade routes through their territory, the Allobroges have become both wealthy and wise to the nuances of trade. This man is likely to follow in that tradition.

    Summary:

To have an Allobroge character offered for marriage or adoption, the player must first own the settlement of Viennos on the map - Their historical home. All Allobroge characters receive a +1 Influence bonus.

    Positives:

Sharp Allobroge characters are more likely to be better taxmen. Charismatic Allobroge characters are more likely to be better Politicians.

    Negatives

Dull Allobroge characters are more likely to get "Unlucky Leader" traits, which decrease command but increase troop morale.

    Commentary

Allobroge characters have no glaring weaknesses: while brighter Allobroge characters might be better off as administrators, dull ones can perform well on the field.

    Arverni

    Description

This man is a member of the Arverni (Superior Ones), who like most transalpine Gauls place much weight on the education of their noble class. The Arverni are not as scholarly as their northern cousins but they invest considerable time and expense to learn public speaking, trade, and administration. As such they have a reputation for producing charismatic speakers who have good management abilities. This approach has however, been to a slight detriment to the study of War. This does not mean the Arverni lack skilled Military Commanders, but that command education is less important to them as they try and advance their standing in the community through the wealth gained from trade and tolls.

    Summary:

To have an Arverni character offered for marriage or adoption, the player must first own the settlement of Gergovia on the map - Their historical home.

Alternatively, he must play as the Arverni. All Arverni characters receive a +1 Influence bonus.

    Positives:

Sharp Arverni are more likely to become better administrators and taxmen. Charismatic Arverni are more likely to be eloquent, while Vigorous Arverni are more likely to be better managers, traders and taxmen. They are also more likely to become warmongers and liars. Optimistic Arverni are more likely to be liars and to become stern (increases management and bribe cost).

    Negatives:

Dull Arverni are more likely to become "Unlucky Leaders", Pessimistic Arverni are more likely to be faithless, pragmatic or ignorant. Uncharismatic Arverni are more likely to be ignorant.

    Commentary:

Arverni can be almost naturally superb administrators. They are not very different from the Allobroges on the battlefield, though, and "dull" characters can find it a good place to earn their fame.
