Given the mass of the sun it is a matter of when not if. Earth will probably be swallowed up in five billion years.

However the sun will start out putting more energy in about a billion years ... Which is when life on earth will start to be in danger.
Our genes maybe in the basement but it does not stop us chosing our point of view from the top.

I think start to be in danger is putting it mildly isn't it, what with the water and atmosphere being boiled off

The timelines do put things in perspective in terms of development of intelligent life, given that it's taken about 3/4 of the period the planet will be habitable for to get as far as us...

Life, not just us. Some of the first forms of life would probably find the new environment quite nice until the sun's corona enveloped us.

It is a bit of a worry that 3/4 of the clock is done and we still haven't shown any ability in getting to another star system.

Well to put things in perspective: using money to pay for stuff went mainstream only about ~170 years ago, when people stopped working the fields and started working in the factories.
