Maybe this is why I don't win as much as I want to. I use ctrl-A, backspace, and G. Thats about it from that list. Now I've gotta go test this right now....what does Space do. Hmm....Soon to find out.Originally Posted by [b
OOOOH yeah.....I do use the space bar. Forgot until I just tried and found myself using it unconsciously. I'm always checking where my units will end up, where in the formation I have to click to move them where I want them, etc. Also something I want to add to that list, which belongs to another thread (but so what)...I use the right-click while drawing units thing to smooth out their ranks. For those who don't know, if you have say 2 100 man units, one with 75 or so men, and another with maybe 50, or even if one unit is less deep than another, if you draw them on the field together, one will usually be longer than the other one, which has more ranks. This is kind of annoying. If you right click while drawing the units (you don't have to hold it down, just click) then the ranks in both will even out. I definitely like this feature.
For some reason, I use Ctrl-A Ctrl-O a lot ))

After years of Total War, these are the consequences:
You will...
- Unconsciously press F5 at the beginning of every battle, you won't notice.
- Press Space everytime you move.
- Select all units with CTRL+A unconsciously.
- Say 'gg' unconsciously after each battle.
- Buy a wireless optical mouse and a top keyboard.
- At same stage buy Sun Tzu's Art of War.
- Choose History at university level.
- If you hate Maths, you will begin to like it after anaylsing every detailed of TW unit syays.
- Get the best connection possible in your area.
- Love strategy games, especially historical ones.
- Get lower grades in studies, altough you will 'brighter'
- Get to know a lot of different people
- Think about your last battle before you go to bed, instead of thinking about your latest date.
- Praying God to give you luck in the CWB.
- and many many more...

Huh? What's this do and why should it be pressed? Does it switch the minimap on and off?Originally Posted by [b

Ok, a bit of irony...
Altough the original STW ran good on machines today regarded as prehistoric, multiplayer lagged A LOT. For the average 56ker, 4v4s were nearly impossible. The original STW without the 1.12 patch was even worse - even 1v1 lagged sometimes MI was a bit better, but today, on MTW, a 56ker can manage a 4v4 without problems if playing on a fast machine.
Hence for the sake of less lag in battles, most disabled the mini-map by pressing F5. In MTW there isn't really need to do this but I guess most veterans of the game still do press it anyway, just a habit

Old habits carrying over:
1. Press F5 to remove minimap. Explained by Tera above.
2. Press F3 to reduce teh screen size. Same reason as F5.
3. Type 'T' when screen froze.
Let me explain this. In STW, when the connections cannot keep up with the game, the screen froze for everyone. However, when we press T and type something, the command buffers seems to resynchronize and the game move on (I guess a few mouse clicks are discarded or something). Also, this prevents you from being dropped from the game (talk commands has high priority, and it always broadcast to everyone).
In MTW, the multiplayer connection algorithm improved a lot, and typing 'T' doesn't seem to help at all.
But people still wants tea anyways (or was it tee?) :) It is also a way to say: my screen stuck but am not dropped yet.

Crand. Greetings.
Something your wrote suggests you dont know about and use the CTRL-SHFT 1 through 0 command?
That is standard RTS type grouping. You use CTRL-SHFT then a number to set the group. You use CTRL # to recall the group.

I got my scalp handed to me today by a one week old ronin playing the russians. I took the french. Good ronins out there? Oh yes there are, so much talent, so many untalented ones too. But once in a while if you take the effort of meeting new folks, you happen upon them. Dont tell me that its just me which sucks
Starkhorn all honor to you, in a while you'll be a match for anyone
Regards,
I played a guy twice last week. We did a best of 3 each time, he won both sets, displayed great skill. It was clear he's new (

I do know them (and use them occasionally) but I'd consider it more standard to use CTRL+number to set the group and just the number to recall. In MTW, it's often not enough to set the groups at the beginning of the battle; sometimes you need to rearrange groupings in the middle of the fight. CTRL+Shift+number is just too clumsy for that.
Is there any way to remap the function?
It would be cool to have just a number instead of ctrl+# for your groups. Even though ctrl+# works.
I noticed the difficulty and initially tried on the main menu:
--> options
--> controls
--> assign keys
No joy as far as I remember. Maybe it's "mod"able.

Yes, exactly. CTRL+# to assign group and just the # to use it.Originally Posted by [b

as 99 out of 100 games that use teams use ctrl # to group, # to recall it is strange totalwar doesnt follow this trend. However I use the teaming keys so much that pressing ctrl makes little difference to me now, mabye adds 0.5 seconds max. I assign about 8 groups at the start of every battle (same each time practically, so use is autonomous and have 2 spare teams. I never used to use them in MI, but after picking up my teaming system in mtw, and going back to MI it amazed me how much faster you can react with them.
the problem with ctrl+shift+num, ctrl+num, is that going from one group to another with ctrl+num, sometimes the keyboard sux and ctrl was not pressed down complete.. and the current selected units start to re-form because you hit just the num key (formation key)..
I barely use the keyboard when i play: spacebar, alt, control and the arrows would be the only keys i use - the rest are overrated
And Tez, u sure like the word irony these days don't ya mate - and nice list, all true of course - if only my uni had more military related history subjects *sigh*
and btw there are enough good ronins out there...it's quite, well perhaps euphoric is an overstatement, but when you stumble upon one of the new guys who shows they have genuine talent, it sure is exciting for the game
what the heck does spacebar do? Ive remapped most of my keys for using only one hand. Took me a while to relearn but it helped a lot.

You managed to play without using spacebar? I can't live without it as it means perfection in command and control for me. Spacebar shows you a ghost image of your units showing where your units will end up. This is particularly useful when moving the whole of your army using ALT...you can also use the Shift button but its not as useful as the spacebar. The Shift only shows you a ghost image of the banners.
