Here is a very comprehensive website called the Samurai Archives. It has loads of information on the Sengoku period, troop make-ups, and commonly employed tactics. The famous samurai section has a lengthy list of actual samurai heroes.

a couple of minor points to all,

i can only assign one vice or virtue per character - we have tried just about everything we can think of and the game wont let us assign more,

also we cant assign a specific unit type :-(

your best bet is to know when your hero is about to make an appearance and build only the unit type you want him/her to be

Just a thought Barocca....Doesn't the AI assign 'special' characters to the best units? Like Boyars for the Russian Princes, MHC for Golden Horde. Would it work out the same for heroes do you think?

yes, the AI can do that,
it's a setting in the build prod file - which units can be generals,
so i can narrow the list down a bit,
no worries - no Ashigaru Heroes,,,
