I've recently bought X2, but on that same day I also got IL2-FB, which is what I've been using to frustrate myself with every night ever since.

In short, I think I'll switch to X2 soon, and let you know what it's like.

I hope X2 isn't bad. I like freelancer but i would like to have bigger ships than small fighters to control.

I'm quite impressed with my freelancer file - i have 200,000+ credits. I can buy anything i want and i've only just got into bretonia space

It does. I mean, it tries, but it doesn't make it. I had it and I dropped it, and I love space simulations, at least the old school ones. It was too stupefying for me, but in order to get more opinions, I talked to some old space flying veterans. The verdict was the same, average at the best. Freelancer was much better, everyone agreed upon that, at least.

    Well, bad news.

I'll most certainly give it a try, but I guess we'll then have to wait some more for a worthy Privateer/Elite successor. Thanks for the info

No problem, remember, opinions are just that; opinions. I wished I could have told you the opposite, but that's just the way I saw it

It is far too average, it bears no inspiration; simply, it's not fun.

X2 is less of a space sim and more of a 1st person galactic trading game. Unlike Freelancer, you can buy the big capital ships like cruisers and carriers.

With the right mods, you can buy capital and cargo ships in Freelancer. Cargo ships turn like crap, but they have 999,999 cargo space ^_^ It's great on multiplayer, when you have a friend escorting you.

True, but you can only own 1 ship in Freelancer. In X2, you can own 1000's.

You could own a fleet of an Argon carrier (with a full compliment of 130 Nova heavy fighters) escorted by 2 Argon titans along with some corvettes as a picket ships.

Granted there's very little in the game that can withstand that kind of firepower and you'll need a HUGE bank balance, but it is possible.

EDIT - quoted myself instead of kekvitirae.

I like the fact that Freelancer is on a more personal level. It adds more need for escorts in multiplayer, since you cant control escorts yourself (although I did find I once had a Liberty Police tagalong in the Manhattan system)

All the mods you could ever want. I personally recommend Freelancer Rebalance Mod (current version is 3.40), but that's just me. Obviously, you will want to download Freelancer Mod Manager (current version is beta 10).

Freelancer is the one you played the demo off by the sounds of it.

I finally got fed up with incessant crashes in Sturmovik and tried X2, and so far (after 3 days) I can say that I like it. It's more on the trading side than on the action side, I agree, but that's in fact more to my liking. The span of the options is really cool, such as owning and controlling a whole fleet of ships, remote control, autopilot options, manning the entire capital ship yourself, etc. Economy seems kind of lacking nevertheless, but there's enough options to still make it interesting. Of course, these are all just preliminary impressions for now, and I doubt that I'll get that same thrilling feeling like I did every time when I met the Kindred in Privateer 2, but it feels promising, relaxing, laid-back and complex enough at the moment.

I might have to buy X2 just to see whether i'll like it.

Could anybody help as to why when i tried downloading the Rebalance mod it stoped downloading and said it was complete after only 4mb. Did try it again but it did the same after just 2 1/2 mb???

I have both X2 (bought recently) and freelancer (about 1/2 a year ago maybe less). At the moment i don't play freelancer and wanted to get back to it until i played X2. Basically there is so much more to do in X2 were as once you've got the best ship/rating that you want in freelancer thats it IMO.

You can own your own stations and fleets of trading ships or an armada of capital ships and then go off and do as you will against or with some of the 8 species that inhabit the universe. But not played it too much yet :( but my friend just bought Battlecruiser Millenium Gold and god damn it i think that might, for me, be better than X2

But i used to play frontier elite 2 all the time, that was a 'proper' game

Well, X2 is no Privateer, that much I can say now for sure. It takes you a while to realize that, but there is no AI in the game to speak of. There are no rival companies, no opponents worth mentioning, even the pirates just mind their own business. I was looking more for a space trading game than a space shooter, but the economy is just lobotomized: all you have are freighters shipping goods back and forth for no reason whatsoever, using no money, and respawning for free if they get killed. You are the only one who is ever going to buy/build a new ship, build a new factory, or make any money. In the whole damn universe. Combat is also lackluster: it's more about avoiding the idiots that will ram you instead of turning away than anything else. And the prevalent enemies are, well, let's just say annoying so as to not spoil the plot for those who might decide to give it a try, and the rest are again very static, just as the economy is. The only thing to do is work for a long time in a completely noncompetitive environment and save enough money to buy yourself a shiny new toy. Not that there's anything to do with it once you have it, mind you, but it is fulfilling to an extent without a doubt.

So, voigtkampf, to answer the question, it took me around 20 days. Not bad as games go these days, but I definitely wanted and expected more. The sad thing is that you can see all that potential right from the beginning lurking somewhere in the game design, but it just never becomes a reality. The game as it is now is a wonderful step toward setting a stage for an absolutely superb game that would mix strategy, economy, action and exploration, but it falls short because it's quite simply completely braindead in the AI department. Too bad that Elite-likes are in such an incredibly short supply, and as far as I can tell no newcomers are on the horizon either.

Well, in not so many, words, yet my point exactly. X2 has potential, yet as always, that doesn't mean much at all. In spite of the probable danger that I will beat the same old smug drum, the people these days don't have the touch with the games they make nowadays… They don't have heart, or soul, if you like it that way better… Too bad.
