The offical site has a link to a gamming site review....it states a "winter" release date for US (nothing for anyone else) and says 1-4 players. I hope this is not a "compromise" in return for getting 20 units.

Wich one? The only one I found so far:
HomeLAN - What can you tell us about Rome: Total War's multiplayer options?
Ian Roxburgh - The multi-player options are still under discussion, but there will definitely be 8 army multiplayer battles over LAN and internet. Historical battles will also be able to be played in this way.

Don't you think they meant 1-4 players PER side and not total?
I mean it would be kinda lonely when there is only 1 player in the game.
lmao Duke John, good point ;)

A good general must love his army, A great general must be able to order the death of the thing he loves.....
So far I have only seen official statements mentioning the normal max 8 players for a MP battle. Think that is just yet another gaming magazine/website who doesnt know what they are talking about.
CBR
No but imagine a 1 man Mp battle...the poor person would know exactly where and ambush was
