If you want to put a different unit into the adf file then make sure the unit is available in the demo.
Not all of the graphics are in the demo software so some units will not work.
Also make sure you have closed the adf file.
If you have the file open when MTW tries to access it, this crashes the demo also.

For further info for anyone interested:

Changing the names of the actual units in the unit stats file is not a good idea as you would have to change every reference in the game to this unit.

However you may have noticed in the Jaffa battle, one of Saladins units is called 'Ghulam Bodyguard'. There is no unit in the unit stats file called this, but there is in names.txt file.

So if you want to change what a unit is called when it's on the battlefield, I suggest try changing it in names.txt.

    It's in ./loc/eng folder.

Well you can use all the units that are used in the demo tutorials, then it's a bit of trial and error I think.

I did look at the graphic files in the demo to see which units were available but didn't find any simple pattern to say which definetly worked. I think you need 2 or 3 different files for a unit to work.

None of the artillery is available other than catapult and Trebuchet.

i'm pretty sure the folder "\Battle\UnitIcons" contains all the units in the demo. I used that as a reference when I was editing units in the Jaffa battle and everything worked fine.

Yes the unit icons do show what will definetley work. However it's also possible to use some of the other units as all the graphics are there excpet the unit icon.

Try the GothicKnights. You get a corrupted unit icon graphic but other than that they work.

You guys should make battles featuring the Byzantines or the French. Gothic Cavalry kick ass!

if the unit icons are not available but the unit is do you have to replace the icon or will the game somehow do it for you?

can one of the more experienced modders post a list of the available units which dont have icons (ie. gothic knights). please.
