    Default "My Space"

So. All my younger trendy friends are on this new website thing called "Myspace.com". It seems like all of my younger troops in the Corps were on it too. I don't get it. I signed up but I just don't get it. All I see is a bunch of ads. I know one of my very good friends got a lot of pun-tang from the site and his current girlfried he met entirely through myspace with no other association.

How many Orgahs use this thing?

It seems like a way for children and youngsters to engage in intercourse.

EDIT: DAMN! Beirut or BKS, can you make this public please? Thanks.

(Sorry, can't make it public once it's already going - Beirut)

Personally, I hate the thing. But I suppose I'm somewhat predispositioned. You see, I'm a college student, and there's a website called Facebook.com that allows all students/faculty/staff at any university (in the U.S., at least) to create a profile. Unlike Myspace, its organized in such a way that its very easy to search and browse for people based on their college and other parameters. You can only view profiles of people who go to the same university as you, unless you are their "friend".

You cannot customize the appearance of your profile, only the information it displays, which are limited. So you don't have hideous profiles filled with huge, poorly placed animations with awful pop songs playing in the background. So there's no risk of eye- or ear-bleed when you view someone's profile.

Like Myspace, everyone has a wall that their "friends" can write on and you can upload pictures to create a gallery or multiple galleries. A feature that is, as far as I know, not on Myspace, is the ability to create and join "groups", which show up on your profile. Groups can be about anything. Some are fanclubs (like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles still kick my ass!), some are about beliefs (John Doe needs to shower before class), and some are just for fun (I Heart to Fart). Since the groups you belong to are listed on your profile, they offer some insight into your interests and personality.

In order to create an account for Facebook, you have to have a valid university e-mail address to confirm you are a student, and of course you can only create one profile. So it tends to be a lot more legit than Myspace. I pretty much think its superior in every way. Myspace is certainly more expressive, though, but that's what I hate most about it, too: people tend to get carried away with their profiles.

I don't get it either. Actually I am a little uncomfortable with the whole thing. Why be there for everyone and anyone to see? Don't get me wrong there are other sites that I would use where only my friends were given access and we could make plans on, but this is too global. I don't want to know who some random chick's friends are.

Another thing I dislike is how they all try so hard to look cool in their pictures. It's like a little add for themselves so random people think they are cool. That is so lame. Gah!

Meh, I don't really want to read about people and their random interests. Sorry.

(Which is funny because I'm reading and posting in the frontroom.)

Well it's a fertile hunting ground for sexual predators. That is, if you're into that sort of thing . There have already been a few cases where men in their late 20's, early 30's have gotten a few "dates" from the teenagers who like the site so much.

never heard of MySpace but I do use BEBO.com

Its only good if your friends can be arsed updating their pages. You get a ton of space for photos though.
there are also too many "zany" profiles, but I guess that goes for all social forums.....

I discovered it around new years and used it because I had nothing else to do (I was stuck on a navy base in the middle of Virginia.) Mostly I talked to old high school friends, and Marine Corps friends stationed elsewhere. After a few months it just got old and I basically quit using it.

My eyes bleed after looking at some of the page layouts. Must be because I'm old.

Just shows that some twelve year olds should not be allowed anywhere near a WYSIWYG program.

Zorba, you do know that having a myspace or facebook and having a life is NOT mutually exclusive.

    That was a joke.

On a humour test I recently took, I rated as a "provocateur." I try to be witty, but often come off as being caustic.

Actually I think it was Jordan or Lebanon, maybe? She fell in love with a Palestinian or an Arab or something. It was quite extraordinary.

This facebook-thing sounds exactly like what I recently registered at.
And it even looks like it.
I'm talking about studivz.net(which is currently offline and replaced by a blog), a german page for students to register.
Guess someone copied facebook and changed the interface colour from blue to red.

I have a myspace account just so I can pretend I'm hip and cool and not at all geeky. Aside from using it to keep track of the goings on of some bands who are now too lazy to post updates on their actual website, I don't really use it for much. Recently one of my mates stumbled upon my myspace profile and asked to be added to my friend's list. Now I know real people actually use the site, and not just pretend people and marketing peeps, it's lost it's appeal to me. I can't talk as much nonsense on my profile because my mate will just have a laugh at my expense next time I'm down the pub.

Actually one of the best (and worrying) features of myspace is you can type in your postcode/zip code and find the profiles of other idiots who live nearby. And then you can laugh at their gratuitious attention seeking cleavage/'look at my pecks' photos. And if you find out where they live, you can place giant blown up photos of them with hilarious captions like, 'Look at me! I love myself!' in their garden to warn their neighbours and random strangers just how silly that person is. Although that would be going a bit far. Crivvens, it's full of the type of people I hate. But there are some nice people on it too (apparently) so it can't be all that bad.

I've heard myspace users have a tendency to be a bit 'emo'. I use facebook myself - damned useful for remembering peoples' names. Also quite good for getting in touch with old school friends. For instance, randomly browsing some peoples' profiles, I found someone I'd been to school with several years ago was visiting my home city...

You wouldn't believe how popular facebook is amongst university students - I've started counting the time before it's mentioned in conversation amongst a group, usually not long...
Don't have any aspirations - they're doomed to fail.
