Yah, Spore should be way cool.
I hope they manage to get in something to actually do (like make huge battle fleets & go empire building) in the galactic scale.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

    It depends...

I bought The Sims (and 3 expansions) and it was the greatest game ever for about a month. I was just consumed by the revolutionary gameplay. A month after that, it was still a great game. Then it really began to get repetitive. I bought Livin' Large, House Party, and Hot Date, and while these expansions added a bunch of new items as well as expanded gameplay options, the novelty like the Sims, wore off after awhile. Still, the game (and the expansions), kept me entertained for a good while. It was truly a great game.

The Sims 2 and the hype that surrounded it had be sold, and when I first started, I was amazed at the improved graphics and customization. But the game's novelty wore off really fast. I only played it for 2 weeks, before it got shelved. When my DVD-ROM drive died on me, the game (the only DVD-ROM game I have) was rendered unplayable, but it wasn't a big loss at all to me...

I guess these simulation games aren't really for me, I get tired of sending my character to the bathroom scores of times in a hour.

Still, Spore, from what I've seen, offers something new, but I never got into SimCity, and I burned out on The Sims, so I'm not going to get it when it comes out (Neverwinter Nights 2, Battlefield 2142, and Medieval 2: Total War will all be there). It may get consideration later if there is a lull in games that interest me, and I'll give it a go at it's reduced price...

I wish the creatures on the official website didn't look all cutesy and babyish. I'd be embarrassed to make creatures that look like that. They look like Teletubbies.

It seems like they are "going for" a babyish preschool-esque look.

My Spore Creature isn't going to be a little cutesy raccoon. No, I'm going to make a race of Lumbering, Scorpion Tailed, Gorilla's with Armoured Plating.

I saw Hank. He was even more f'ed up then the thing created by Robin Williams.

Anyway, when i get Spore (which i sure as hell will, within days of it coming out) i will make a race of 8-legged spider like monsters!

I think Spore will be a huge dissapointed, too many disjointed elements to be a bigger then the sum of parts kinda thing. It will probably be remembered as an ambitious game that had a great idea. I see nothing but gimmickry comming out of this one, but we will see.

I'm hoping that won't happen, but as you say we will see. I am immensely looking forward to the game although the space-phrase looks as if it will revolve too much around the UFO and will effectively mean that most of the stuff you have worked so hard to create will become 2nd class to it. Still, I suppose you can pretty much do whatever you want in the Space phase so I will probably just start a new game after a bit.

I won't touch it 'til I'm certain it is what it is said to be. Too many EA Games have shown themselves to be absolute letdowns by the end of the second week of gaming. I want my games to last longer than two weeks, thank you. While Maxis generally has an excellent reputation, I'll still reserve my judgement...

Quite frankly, like Reenk Roink, I was sick of The Sims 2 very quickly. And Black & White 2, as well. Where has all the novelty gone too? Those good old days with flawed and problematic, but innovative games that awed you to no end, obsessed you, made you feel rich with every little accomplishment, and engage you completely into their own worlds?

Here's hoping Spore would be one of them :/

Spore is not quite the revolutionary game idea most people think it is (neither was the Sims). Spore is simply a less complex version of Sim Life and Sim Earth, old Maxis titles from the late 80s/early 90s which Will Wright had a hand in creating.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimLife

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimEarth

It is a safe bet to say that all the scientific complexities which made Sim Life & Sim Earth appealing to science freaks and hardcore sim gamers is virtually non-existent in Spore. Not that this is a bad thing; a light, fun, layman's introduction to the basic principles of natural selection as applied in a video game could open countless young eyes to the scientific field (countless careers in the aerospace industry were started by a famous 60s sci fi TV show).

I seriously doubt the evolutionary/sci-fi-esque theme of Spore is going to have the same mass appeal that the Sims did. The Sims series were phenomenally successful due to their lowest common denominator appeal and the fact that the nature of the gameplay appealed heavily to female gamers (who seemingly went bananas for it).

    Now that *definitely* disturbs me!

Personally, I think I'd go with some type of spider-like creature....simply because I hate the friggin' things and I enjoy being ironic.

Star Trek? (sorry I just heard Martok make a comment about how his name wouldn't change because he was too much of a trekkie. Not that I actually know about Star Trek, or would ever want to know about it, or would even learn about it if a guy put a gun to my head. Star Trek... *shivers*)

    LOL! Yes indeed.

(Apropos of nothing, I have you to hate thank for getting me hooked on Questionable Content. I read it religiously now!)

@Silver Rusher: Why do you fear Star Trek? [adopting zombie voice] Come join us....don't be afraid....

But I digress. To return to the topic:

Spore appeals to me partially because it's of such an epic scale, in terms of both size and the period of history that it covers. I much prefer strategy games, however, and I'm of the impression that this is going to be more of a sime-type title (which isn't really my cup of tea). Still, it's a pretty neat concept, which is why I might still pick it up--after I've read reviews and gotten people's reactions to it.

Of course, at the moment it's a moot point anway whether I'll get the game, as I know for a certainty my computer won't be able to run it. (Just a couple more months, and then I can hopefully upgrade finally!)

I'm glad to have gotten so many .Orgahs hooked on QC. I read it religiously, as does Martok, and have it as my first tab on Opera.

Anyway, i shall leave this topic before i derail it by turning it into a Star Trek/Questionable Content convention.
