Default Dragons and griffons and all the flying stuff

Hi guys. Id like to start by commenting on mod and saying that its great.
I got a question. What do you plan to do about the dragons and griffons and all the other flying monsters and machines? Can you replicate them with the MTW2 machine?

Most likely flying units will be impossible unless there's some serious skeleton manipulation, and even then they wouldn't be "flying," (they'd still move through gates as opposed to flying over walls). Large monsters would probably be replicated with the elephant unit. The only problem I see here is that the Total War engine doesn't like units below a certain amount of soldiers, and a unit of 5 Griffon Riders/Dragon Riders would look stupid, since these creatures are unbelievably rare and even harder to tame.

Actually ...it's a lot more fundamental than that!

All of ht ethings you mentioned are possible ... but it still will not work for one very simple reason:

MTW2 ( and all the rest of the series ) do not think in 3D. A unit can be made to fly by simply moving it up. Easy. It will still be on the ground, though, as far as units bumping into it, or units attacking it. Stick a griffon 20 metres up in teh air, and a unit WILL NOT fire arrows up to hit it...and ground units will attack and kill it.

There is NO way to get around this. If you make a unit 'fly' it would have to hover just off the ground, and that would be pointless. No point in going to all the trouble of making the models, creating a huge pile of nw animations, and having a rubbish effect.

maybe this idea is stupid but maybe somehow it will helps.

Griffons ,Dragons could be made by: repleacing trebuchet model with kind of "spot" - so invisible on battle field to not disturbing battle mood- yet enought visible to click /select it and give an order. Now ,reduce ammo in trebuchet stats to lets say 5 rounds. Replace ball /stone model with griffon /dragon model . So invisible unit will be acctually fireing with dragons! but on the battle it may look like multiple attacks of the creature -including flying over walls etc. We can even fix accuracy so it will even more dangerous.
    how about that?

It may work, however unless we can make the flying unit projectile "Swoop" up again after diving, the end effect may look more like the Goblin Doom Divers unit

Still not going to happen unless there is a significant change in the way we are able to mod.

Thread closed until such as time as flying units are actually possible.
