Is there a yearly cost for upkeep after a building is built? If so, how much? Manual doesn't say there is.

There is no upkeep. You just pay the upfront cost (which must be paid at the start of the construction), then wait the LONG time for construction.

Honestly, given the expense and the time involved, you're better off stopping at Keeps with most Keep-level buildings. Focus on long-term construction in your best provinces. Specialize.

If a province is great at farming or has lots of trade goods (e.g., Flanders), focus on economic buildings.

If a province has valor upgrades, build those there. (Scotland = Highlanders. Wales = Longbowmen. Mercia = Billmen. Ireland = Gallowglasses. Provence = Peasants!!! And so on.) (When the patch fixes the valor upgrades from higher buildings, then it might be worth it to build higher-level buildings than the minimum necessary for specialization.)

And so on. Don't build everything everywhere. You'll only drain your treasury at a time when you need troops produced in a few provinces, rather than building a lot of unused buildings in many provinces.

One arguement for developing all over the place is the speedy raising of troops. If you have the correct buildings in every province and a 'Battle Fund' of spare florins, in an emergency you can raise a large army in just one year (or 2 with huge units..) which leaves time to organise and counter whatever provoked you...

I am running a Danish campaign at the moment and am concentrating on keeping a relatively small number of provinces. I have a large trade network and lot of available cash to to upgrade my provinces.

But you have to specialise at some point, especially for the better troop types as the building they require can take an age to construct...

i think you can only allow yourself to specialize if you keep an eye on your trade/logistics network, if you have one. that is the only way to bring your army from - say - egypt to denmark.
i prefer to upgrade some distant provinces for better logistics and to secure troop movement.
