WOW! I always thought castles didn't matter when it came to auto-calc battles.
However, when playing as the English, I stormed the castle in Aragon. There were seven defenders (seven total, not seven units), and I attacked with 750 men.
I lost. Big time. I lost about 500 men in that assault.
Why? Arrow towers. Big mistake....
I had to attack, though, because I had two turns to finish the conflict after a warning from the Pope. And I was upset, because Aragon backstabbed me after I backstabbed the Germans.
Anyway, I think I'll have to build arrow towers in my provinces. If they add that much to the defense, think of how little you'll pay for a garrison. Of course, you give up control of the province, but still...
