    yeah, we could just have a thread for "assorted historical questions." Gertrude, do this: open a new thread, with the title "Assorted Historical Questions," and include in the first post your question here and whatever other questions you may have, and we'll deal with it there. Any other threads will probably be closed, so compiling your many questions into one place is the way to go.
