    Default In game voice (VOIP)

Just question from someone who stopped playing MP with Med1.

In either Rome or Med2 is there voice communication between teamates (short of Ventrilo or other programs of that ilk) or is still chat based?

The reason I ask is that with most multiplayer games, and Valve games especially, voice comms are in the game.

I do not believe so. AFAIK Gampespy (the multiplayer platform RTW and M2TW use) does not have voice chat.

Nothing has been said about VOIP in ETW.

Despite the fact I loathe VOIP with a passion that bridles my desires for a DEMO

They have not said anything, and usually being VOIP enabled is one of those back of the game box features. So if they havn't said anything, I wouldn't bet on it.

Steam it's self provides message and chat, inside and outside games

Chat with your friends while gaming
With Steam's "Friends" service, you can talk to your friends while you play. You can also see when they're playing games and easily join the same servers together.
    http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Maybe not the same as a chat built-into the game, but will work nicely for team play.

    easily
So far I have found that word misleading. Steam is many things, some useful, and it's chat when it works, does Rival voip but i've never found it easy.

Ingame chat will most likely still be easier to use.

Not that I have used steam chat for a while...

I agree it would be a nice feature. I suggested it to CA like a year ago when I wrote a massive letter explaining what MP features are a necessity. M2TW and RTW do not have anything like this, which is why I own a vent server.

Well, Ventrilo it is then. Or the included Steam chat.

However seeing as most people (the ones that responded anyway) will be using text based strategy, seems I will have to limber up my fingers before a battle. Heeeyyyy, that gives me an idea!

Lol, this is so not my generation.

I got into RTS's back during Starcraft one before voicechat took off, I still prefer old fashioned typing. I'm even fine with those old voice commands Age of Empires had. I just don't like to hear another person's whiny voice over a microphone, ruins atmosphere for me. :)

Of course that dvd would sell more.....if there was.......a demo

When Empire comes out, since I'll be starting a clan, I plan on getting set up with Ventrillo or TeamSpeak.

Even if there is VOIP, I doubt it would be as clear and reliable as either of those.

I was thinking of opening up my ventrilo server to the public, but it seems as though it would become difficult to moderate, as people would come in spamming and blah blah. I know this community, and there would be some who would abuse generosity.

Im suprised that this thread is getting the number of responces that it has. It seems to me that some sort of intergrated VOIP would be a good thing for MP

Oh and YellowMellon, send me the ventrilo info when you get that up and running =)

If you were to make it public, you would simply have to have an admin on nearly all the time.

I was happy to report about Steams chat, for those who want to use it. And there are other great programs like Teamspeak and Skype, chat tools used by many Total War warrior teams.

    http://www.teamspeak.com/

    http://skype.com/

But very honestly I have found that after a few minutes in deployment saying basically that “we should wait and see what they do”, chat drops away. I’m sure that this is not true for everyone, but text is satisfactory for me.

I am reading the enemy and my teammate’s movements, and responding the best I know how. That is the game to me. Total focus is on the action, not much time for words beyond a “NOW” to coordinate an attack

Theres only so much u can read into without the voice of a teammate...

Plus at high level play how do u expect to type with such great levels of micromanaging happening... :p

I suppose that in the intrest of the game timeframe, playing w/o voice comms. would be the correct way to play. Voice would be too modern and text would equate to flags, fife, and drums.

Still if we are talking a Clan match or somethng like that, the level of coordination you could get from voice comms would be advantageous.

It would be truly interesting if in game there was an option to communicate with drums and horns...though people would resort to vent and ts anyway. How does text equate drums? Wha?

First I gotta say that this was like my first or second post and its already stickied (woot!!) Ahem, anyway.

Every command from brigade level on down to platoon/section level had corresponding beats on the drum. Commands like 'shoulder arms' and 'make ready' both had very different beats.

Drums could also be used to communicate between Division commanders, but in this timeframe they either used runners, semaphore flags or bugels.

I think you missed my intention, in that it would be cool if there was in game signalling systems, but there are not.

Gratz on the sticky, but i dont know why it's stickied?
