Dear Darth, I do not think that it would be fruitful to try to stick with being too "historical" with these names. I believe that the fact that you would have several different names (some of them with geographical connotations) for a single number of legion (like I Adiutrix pia fidelis, I Italica, I Macriana, I Flavia Minervia, I Parthica, etc.) will be just confusing. I am becomming more and more convinced that we have basically two options here: either (as it is now in the Atraphoenix´s mod) to have numbers without any particular geographical connotations OR to have geogrphical names based on the city of origin. Those two approaches are basically mutually exclusive.

Now, there might be a way how to satisfy both. You coud assign numbers through ancillaries, going from I to XXXV in sequence. You could even spice it with names that were historically used but bear no particular geographical or temporal connotation (like Adiutrix pia fidelis, Firma, Victrix, Ferrata, Apollinaris, Rapax, and such). This should be open since the beginning of the game, i.e. for Camillan and Polybian era as well.

The proper geographical element might be introduced by allowing recruitment of first legions in certain regions and encode proper geographical name for them in descr_regions (like Hispana, Gallica, Macedonica, Parthica, etc.). The fact, that due to the hard-coded part of the legionary_name attribute such first cohorts will also get a number (sequentially from I to ...) could, IMHO, be safely disregarded.

The more nerdish player could easily make sure that the number on his Legionary banner (ancillary) will correspond with the RTW-engine-assigned number of his first cohort.

Please note, that the "geographical element" is a part which I think as optional add-on, not least because it decreases compatibility with other mods and to mee it seems superfluous too, because roman history fans could easily imagine the proper name of a legion if they have the number and its current in-game location.

I am firmly convinced that the sub-mod shall be opened to players who did not want to be tied too strictly by history and as each and every game is developing somewhat differently, the mod shall allow for it with much inherent flexibility.

OK, yet are you going to trigger them with cities as "Rome has a city XX" or "The general is in a city XX"?
I'm making sort of a list with legions divided into "Republican" and "Imperial", and that list is in 2 variants:
    1. from the earliest legions onwards, as they were created, no matter where we want them to be recruited
    2. divided due to teh recruitment legions, yet trying to preserve the chronological order wherever possible

and I can put the second variant here; (the first variant is the list I posted above, with Legio IV Macedonica Flavia Felix as the last one in the Republican lineage).

    EDIT:

Yep, that's what I thought about it.
I've made a table with names of the legions and potential recruitment areas of first cohorts (what I presented here in a list of legions, provinces and cohorts) to match them somehow. And I'm now convinced that Your way is both not-too-far-away from history and adding "chrome" to the game.
Thus I'll prepare separate locations for named first cohortsand I'll make a sequence of legions; I'll try to sort them in such an order that all unique names will apear at the beginning of the list, while names that were repeated (like "Macedonica" or "Augusta") will be later on (so, for example, II Augusta will be in the first group, then, for example, XX Rapax, then VIII Augusta, etc.). A short history of the legion will be added to that ancillary (however, I must make them shorter than descriptions of provinces - they disappear partially from the screen as they're too long).
What historical conotaion I think could be useful is linking them to just possesion of a given city (at least for those starting legions); later on the legions may be linked to number of captured provinces - the second group could (i think) be triggered by Marian reforms, but this is to be thought again.
Anyway, the ideas you provide are very valuable - I was cracking my head on how to connect the "unconnectable" and it seems the only way.

BTW: the numbers of legio XVII, XVIII and XIX should be omitted forever, as these were those 3 legions lost by Varrus in Teuoturger Wald - never to be reconstituted again, and even without any name...

    Sure.

BTW: here's the list of legions in not-very-historical order but in numbering order, with little exceptions, so until Legio XXII Deiotariana the numbers of legions are the same as numbers on the ancillary flags (replaced XI Claudia - moved to higher numbers as it is already another "Claudia", the VII Paterna Claudia - with X Fretensis, and XVII, XVIII and XIX were replaced by I Germanica, III Cyrenaica and IV Scythica, respectively):

    Legio I Italica LegioI
    Legio II Traiana Fortis LegioII
    Legio III Gallica LegioIII
Legio IV Macedonica Flavia Felix LegioIV
    Legio V Alaudae LegioV
    Legio VI Ferrata LegioVI
Legio VII Paterna Claudia Pia Fidelis LegioVII
Legio VIII Augusta Pia Fidelis Constans LegioVIII
    Legio IX Hispana Triumphalis LegioIX
    Legio X Equestris [Gemina] LegioX
    Legio X (XI) Fretensis LegioXI
Legio XII Fulminata Antiqua Certa Constans LegioXII
    Legio XIII Gemina LegioXIII
Legio XIV [Gemina] Martia Victrix LegioXIV
    Legio XV Apollinaris LegioXV
Legio XVI [Gallica] Flavia Firma LegioXVI
    Legio I (XVII) Germanica LegioXVII
    Legio III (XVIII) Cyrenaica LegioXVIII
    Legio IV (XIX) Scythica LegioXIX
    Legio XX Valeria Victrix LegioXX
    Legio XXI Rapax LegioXXI
    Legio XXII Deiotariana LegioXXII

Legio I (XXIII) Adiutrix Pia Fidelis LegioXXIII
Legio I (XXIV) Minervia Pia Fidelis LegioXXIV
    Legio VI (XXV) Victrix LegioXXV
    Legio XV (XXVI) Primigenia LegioXXVI
Legio II (XXVII) Parthica Felix Albana LegioXXVII
Legio II (XXVIII) Augusta Sabina LegioXXVIII
Legio III (XXIX) Italica Concors LegioXXIX
    Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix LegioXXX
    Legio V (XXXI) Macedonica LegioXXXI
    Legio XI (XXXII) Claudia LegioXXXII
    Legio III(XXIII) Augusta Vindex LegioXXXIII
    Legio XXII (XXXIV) Primigenia LegioXXXIV
Legio I (XXXV) Parthica Severiana Antoniniana LegioXXXV

BTW: I'm not sure about the correct spelling of Legio II Parthica Felix Albana - Parthica Felix is surely as it should be; however how is in Latin language "stationed in Albanian Mountains"? [mountains near Rpome, where 2nd Parthian Legion stationed as part of "Imperial Reserve" forces in Castra Albana]:
This army unit [Legio II Parthica ] and its sisters I Parthica and III Parthica were founded in 197 by the emperor Lucius Septimius Severus, who used them in his war against the Parthian empire. According to the Roman historian Cassius Dio (Roman History, 55.24.4) the First and the Third remained in the region, but the Second was transferred to the Alban mountain near Rome, where it occupied a fortress on the Alban mountain near Rome. Therefore, it was usually called "The Albanian legion", whereas the soldiers were colloquially known as "the Albanians".
=> Castra Albana (plural) = Legio Albana (singular, femininum)???
Are there any specialists of Latin Language?

OK, to be exact, the below mentioned legions have been formed by the Romans as follows:

    Before Caesar:
Legio VII Paterna Claudia Pia Fidelis
Legio VIII Augusta Pia Fidelis Constans
    Legio IX Hispana Triumphalis
    Legio X Equestris Gemina

    Caesar, 58 BC:
    Legio XI Claudia
Legio XII Fulminata Antiqua Certa Constans

    Caesar, 57 BC:
    Legio XIII Gemina
    Legio XIV Gemina Martia Victrix

    Caesar, 52 BC:
    Legio V Alaudae
    Legio VI Ferrata

    Caesar, 49-48 BC:
    Legio I Germanica
    Legio III Gallica
    Legio IV Macedonica Flavia Felix

    ==========================================

    Then:
    C. Vibius Pansa, 43 BC (consul):
    Legio II Augusta Sabina
    Legio III Augusta Vindex

    Marcus Antonius (as triuumvirus):
    Legio III Cyrenaica
    Legio IV Scythica

    C. I. Octavianus Augustus, 41-40 BC:
    Legio V Macedonica
    Legio VI Victrix
    Legio X Fretensis
    Legio XV Apollinaris
    Legio XVI Gallica Flavia Firma

    C. I. Octavianus Augustus, 30 BC:
    Legio XX Valeria Victrix
    Legio XXI Rapax
    Legio XXII Deiotariana

    Caligula, 39 CE:
    Legio XV Primigenia
    Legio XXII Primigenia

    Nero, 66-68 CE:
    Legio I Italica
    Legio I Adiutrix Pia Fidelis

    Domitian, 83 CE:
    Legio I Minervia Pia Fidelis

    Trajan, 105 CE:
    Legio II Traiana Fortis
    Legio XXX Ulpia Victrix

    Marcus Aurelius, 168 CE:
    Legio III Italica Concors

    Septimius Severus, 197 CE:
    Legio I Parthica Severiana Antoniniana
    Legio II Parthica Felix Albana

Thus, as You've said, the "Republican" legions can be named those formed before the Caesarian civil war, up until 48 BC.

Hey Atraphoenix, which version of City Mod (a or b) do you recommend for Extended Offices for Pahlava? And just to make sure I'm reading this right, what needs to happen to get an office in the Pahlava campaign? It's 252 B.C. and I don't have any cities so obviously no governors/satraps but I don't have any CICs, treasurers, etc. either. Just making sure I'm doing things right....Thanks!

if you read my first message you can see that my current version is compatible with any city mod version. I have not added offices for Barbarians because of lack of info. plus there is no mod I know that modifies ancillary files so in theory my mod is compatible with other submods of EB.
If you plan to play Pahlava one of my favourite factions I do not advise you to install city mod, cos you have to feed your cataphracts, less population means less money. but of course the choice is yours.

Plus constant wars eats your manpower so you have to exile the population that you captured during the conquests of the cities. or lower the taxes and build population increasing buildings.

I always blitz with pahlava so mostly I get offices during the first 15 turn.

Well, I doubt whether there's place for so much additional legions... but let's see which can be added:
    II Adiutrix
    II Italica Pia
    III Parthica

those organised by Galba - VII Galbiana (then VII Gemina, yet after merging with I Germanica)
I Macriana Liberatrix - veeery short existence...
VI Hispana??? (Philippus Arabs, mentioned only once in history)
    VI Gallicana (Laelianus)

Those last 4 legions - well, existed very late or for very short time... I doubt whether there's sence fo creating them at all.
Note that even with 35 legions you will have 35 FMs with legio ancillary - that's really pretty damn big number.
[of course I do not count the 3 legions destroyed in Teutoburg Forest - the Romans never re-created them anymore...]

so you say 35 is enough? though I like the 45 legion lists of livius. remember we have 199 regions mostly the romani historically conquered nearly more than 120 provinces of EB.
maybe to adapt the idea of marvin 1 legion per 3 provinces 40 would be reasonable too.

Well, I would say that those 35 is nearly enough; you may add the 3 legions (doubled/tripled):
    II Adiutrix
    II Italica Pia
    III Parthica
    as the were quite reasonable;

List of Roman Legions in wikipedia says also that Marcus Antonius has formed Legio XVIII Libyca (disbanded in 31 BC), and Caesar has created a Legio XXX Classica (naval) - from fleet marines (existed 48-41 BC), but...
I think that the number of 38 named legions would be quite enogh. Also the condition of 1 legion per 3 regions is also fairly OK. I'm only thinking whether to add requirement of specific city to be captured or not.
However, I'm going to increase the number of 1st Cohort AOR, so they can be easily linked to cities (I'm gonna work on ALX.exe only), and I'll use Western and Eastern 1st Coh., theyll have slightly different combat capabilities.

I also support the idea to stick with 35 legions (or even LESS!!!), especially as Darth said, there is only a limited number of FMs and if EVERYBODY would have a legionary ancillary, it would spoil the whole noble exclusivity of the concept - like inflation just de-values money rather than makig you richer.

However, I have a question to you, Atraphoenix: what are you using the electbility attribute for? I have tried to study the uses of this concept, and the only I foud is to keep track who has what ancillary to be used for traits. Basically it is a bridge between EDA and EDCT, as I understand it. Now, as EB team apparently has some use of it in the system of Roman provinces, I am afraid that using this attribute (which to serves no vital purpose for your offices mod) might cause some conflict.

Please correct me if I am wrong!

If you do not use for any reason particular to your mod, I woud recommend to cut it ("electability" references) out for safety reasons.

    EDIT:
I have just found out here that EB team used the electability attribute to make sure that the FM is not a provincial governor already. Now keeping this condition would exclude provicial governors from obtaining legion commands as well, which goes against your own description, that "where there was a single legion in a province, its commander would also be the province governor..."

    EDIT 2:
What a fool I am, now I see that this to prevent a general from obtaining two legionary banners at the same time! Sorry Atraphoenix for doubting you!

This is a measure well worth the fact that provincial governors woud be excluded from legionary commands.

Does it mean we need a "trigger city" for each legionary commander? (i.e. Legio Augusta - "Rome" etc.?)
If you make the final list of legions I can set here the settlement needed to get the command (sometimes the settlements can be teh same, though they can be also set from the place the specific legio garrisoned).

About number of legions - from the 35 I think we can cut out the following (as some of them are doubled/tripled and did nothing very special...):
    Legio XI Claudia
    Legio V Macedonica
    Legio XV Primigenia
    Legio I Italica
    Legio I Parthica Severiana Antoniniana
or instead of V Macedonica, maybe one of Augusta? II Augusta Sabina fought almost exclusively in Britain, while III Augusta Vindex was a garrison of Africa proconsularis (former Carthage...) - however IMHO the Augustan legions should stay...
Thus we will have 30 legions only - quite reasonable number I think.

And what about use the purely "gamer´s point of view" as a point of departure? Let us presume a situation just short of the victory conditions, i.e. very late game. How many legions would be necessary in such a game?

    I would presume following:
Italy - 1 - homeland defense and rapid response force
Iberia - 1 - already conquered, enough to hunt down rebels
Galia - 2-3 - beacause of the dangerous border with the Sweboz
Alpes - 2 - beacause of the dangerous border with the Sweboz
Illyria - 1 - to guard border with the Getai
Greece - 1 - already conquered, enough to hunt down rebels and to reinforce northern border
Thrace - 1 - to guard northern border
Asia Minor - 2 - conquered, but necessary to guard Caucasus border
Levant - 2-3 - because of the open eastern border
Egypt - 2 - because of the open southern border
North African coast - 1 - already conquered, enough to hunt down rebels

In total this is 16-18 legions. Add another two as a reserve and you have a nice number of 20 legions in total, which should be sufficient for the whole gameplay.

As there will never be a perfect match between the three attributes (legion number, legion name, and the sequence in which legions were raised) not to speak about the particular time and circumstances in which a particular legion was raised, I suggest to disconnect the legionary names and numbers, so that we will have a sequence of legionary ancillaries numbered from I to XX, which will be unlocked as the empire would grow bigger (1 legion to every 3-4 provinces). Now, the names assigned to these legions IMHO need not to correspond to their historical counterparts, so that we could have for example: Legio I Italica, Legio II Ferrata, Legio III Rapax, ... Legio XI Hispanica, Legio XI Gallica, ...
The point is, that those names which bear no particular geographical or temporal connotation (as any military unit in any period could call itself "Ferrata") would be those which the player would get first, as we have no chance to know how and where he/she would use them. Of course, the description (coded in export_ancillaries) would tell the player that historically the name Ferrata belonged to the Famous Caesar´s Sixth Legion, raised in 65 BC, which served with him in Gaul....
The geographical names like Hispanica, Gallica, etc. would appear later in the game (and we can easily code a condition in the trigger to make sure that the player already owns at least one city in Hispania or Gaul) and the player than could easily do all the steps to get the trait to the commander of a legion that actually resides in Hispania, if he/she woud want to do it...

O.K., it is no fancy coding, but I think that in this way the cost/benefit balance woud still be on the positive side.

    Sure :D
Of course that number of legions is enough if the player wants to sit on his laurels and leave the rest of the world free of the steps of his calligae-wearing soldiers :D
I think I can make that short list of names for legions... yet a little bit later...

O.K. friends, this is what I have done as a personal modification of the Atraphoenix´s mod (see here)

    - I have added +1 Management to Roman provincial governors.
    - Legates now gain +1 Command and +2 Influence (Instead of +1 Morale, +1 Management and +2 Influence).
    - I have 25 named legionary banners (to have more seems superfluous to me)
    - There will be regions-to-legions ratio 3-to-1 (up to 73 provinces, after that no new legionary banners will be generated).
    - As I expect frequent transfers of legionary banners, its acquisistion no longer affects the ability of the original owner to gain further ancillaries (deleted the "Affects NumAncillariesAcquired 1 Chance 100" effect).
    - The triggers now look like this:
    Code:
    Trigger acquire_Legatus_of_legioI
        WhenToTest CharacterTurnEnd
        Condition FactionType seleucid
              and not EndedInSettlement
              and IsGeneral
    		  and PercentageUnitCategory infantry > 80
    		  and Attribute Electability < 11
    		  and Trait FamilyMember > 0
    		  and Trait notMilitaryTribune > 0
              and not FactionwideAncillaryExists Legatus_of_legioI

        AcquireAncillary Legatus_of_legioI Chance 100
    What remains to be done:
    - to test whether it actually works as intended (sorry, I have barely the time to code it rather hastily and I was unable to test it yet.)
    - to add historical descriptions to "export_ancillaries.txt"which would describe the history of the real bearers of the legion´s names (Such as "Historically the name Ferrata (The Iron One) belonged to the Famous Caesar´s Sixth Legion, raised in 65 BC, which served with him in Gaul.... - you´ve got the idea).
    - to add conditions for "geographically-named" legions (like Hispanica) to verify that the player actually holds at least a part of said region (here at least on of the cities in Pyrennean Penninsula).

You are free to use it as you wish, for instance as a basis for your own modifications/further improvements, if you find it of any value.

I will now be for some time unavailable, so I cannot unfortunately participate in it any more (temporarily).

All credits belong to Atrahoenix, who came with the whole idea and who has done the vast majority of work, to which I have only added a few tweaks according to my personal taste. All faults and possible bugs are of course completely my own.

To make condition as "to have at least one settlement" is quite complicated - if it is required to have 1 out of 3 settlements then it must be created: 3 Ancillaries and 3 sets of conditions (see the variants of governors).
IMHO the liknage should be done to 1 specific city, usually the capitol of a province.
    Thus "Hispana" = "Emporion", etc.

You´re right, my idea was precisely to use similar concept as in the case of province governors.

To tie it to a "capital" or from a game-play point of view the most plausible first city (as Emporion for Hispania) is probably the most reasonable way, though.

OK, now the only thing is to search thru the files You've made and made a linkage of commanders to cities... (of course for the "later" legions...
Let's wait and see what the initial creator of the whole idea is going to think/say/do...
(I can arrange such linkage if needed)

    Current Phase:

    - 45 Legions of livius pre-augustan legions will be triggered without necessity of marian trait.

    - 1 legion for 3 provinces namely so as to recruit all the legates you have to conquer 135 provinces.

    - you have to conquer the intended certain city to levy the legates. and if possible the legates will be levied the the names of the legions namely like Legio IV Makedonika you must conquer Pella, and Legio I Italica you should need one italian city that I have not determined them yet.

    - If I am lucky I will edit different ancillary images for each legion if not possible I will use my creativity.
If RS Team allows me I am planning to use their banners for augustan legion banners otherwise I have no idea at the moment. I hope ı do not have to use one common image for each.

    - I may add legio praetoriani but I do not know EB team has a condition for augustan trait like marian

like "and Trait AugustanControl = 1 İf I add it just trigger it with augustan control is enough for me no 1 legion for 3 provinces rule for them.

    - I must admit that I am so addict to them that I will not decrease the numbers of legions. If one day I or another person manages to adapt RS legions for EB my mod will be a nightmare to mod methinks

    Unresolved topics:

    - historical accuracy, methinks with the scope of my mod that are developed my mod will have some unhistorical accuracy sorry but I believe that when you press end turn button in the first turn AI always kills the historical accuracy, does not it? Pahlava besieges Asaak, Pyrus decimate makedonians together with KH.

    - I use governor's palace to trigger the offices, I think I will use the same method. no gov1, gov2, or govparthian so as to integrate my module with other factions as well.

    - OK , at the moment I coded ancillaries and am writing descriptions of the legions. If it takes too much time to get permission from RS team. I will release my next version with the same image file .

    -----------

I hope one day I can unite the legates with their legions but at the moment modding EDU, EDB, and other files is not in the scope of my submod.

    thanks for all for contributions.

Well, I don't think the number 45 is right - I rather suggest to stay at level 35 - BTW I wonder what oher legions have you added to the list?
With 45 legionary ancillaries you will have 45 FMs to be in command of a legion, and what about the governors? Unless the governors will have also Legio under command... and some Army Commanders will have 2 or 3 legions at the same time - yet what about other ancillaries?

I personally suggest - stay at 35 legions, as there are so many other ancillaries that are also badly needed in the field...

If you want the legates to be levied in specific cities you can use my list or I can make such a list and post it in the Forum (I made Italica to be levied in Etruria IIRC; Augusta in Rome etc.)

BTW: I still warn you from using numbers XVII, XVIII and XIX - they were cursed and the Romans knew what they do, when never used that numbers anymore... so let us also not do that...
Better use "Libyca" (with any number), XXX Classica (naval legion) and... well, maybe VI Hispana or VI Gallicana?

Tell me which legions are "missing" and I tell You where they've gone and when...

    OK, some examples:
There was NO "Legio VII Hispana" => in 125 CE it is in fact Legio VII Gemina, which was created in 67-68 CE by Servius Sulpicius Galba, the governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, who wanted to seize the Imperial throne. The official date of the legion's founding was 10 June 68. Then it took part in the civil war that broke out after death of Nero (it was the time calle "a year of four emperors" - Galba, Otho, Vitelius and Vespasian). Until that time the "seventh" was without any official name, though sometimes it was called Galbiana and Hispana, but these were not official names.
Vespasian mixed this legion with soldiers of disbanded Legio I Germanica and named the Seventh with its official name "Legio VII Gemina" (as made of 2 legions). It served in Pannonia and Germania Superior, where it received an additional surname, Felix, 'lucky'. After four or five years, the unit was transferred back to Hispania Tarraconensis. Its new base was at León (a rendering of Legio), close to the gold and iron mines of Gallaecia.

Legio I Germanica in 125 CE was non-existent. It was partially destroyed in March-April 70 CE during the Batavian revolt in Germania Inferior. Remnants of this legion have been mixed with Legio VII (Galbiana/Hispana) to form new Legio VII Gemina.

Legio IV Flavia Felix is former Legio IV Macedonica which was also badly mauled during the Batavian revolt and was reformed under rule of Vespasian into Legio IV Flavia Felix.
The same was with Legio XVI Gallica, also badly mauled in Batavian revolt (at least part of this legion surrendered to rebels) and Vespasian reorganised it under new name: Legio XVI Flavia Firma.
[thus in my list there are: Legio IV Macedonica Flavia Felix and Legio XVI Gallica Flavia Firma, as these were in fact the same legions but reorganised and re-named].

Legio XV Primigenia was rather short-lived:
This legion was founded by the emperor Caligula in 39, who needed extra forces for his campaign in Germany. It was called after the favorite goddess of the emperor ('Primigenia' is a title of Fortuna), but the title was almost never used. It is absent from the inscriptions and is only rarely used by authors like Tacitus and Plutarch of Chaeronea. The number seems to have been suggested by the fact that it was supposed to share a base with XIV Gemina (at Mainz in Germania Superior). In 43, the emperor Claudius, who had succeeded Caligula in 41, invaded Britain and took some legions with him. This left vacancies, and XV Primigenia moved to Xanten in the northern province of Germania Inferior. At Xanten, the Fifteenth shared its legionary base with the Fifth legion Alaudae.
In 69 CE the Batavians felt offeneded because Galba had dismissed his Batavian bodyguard, and revolted. A Roman expeditionary force, consisting of the remains of V Alaudae and XV Primigenia, was defeated near Nijmegen, and in the Autumn of 69, these two legions found themselves besieged at Xanten and were forced to surrender in March 70.
It took several months before the new emperor Vespasian could send a strong Roman army to recover the Rhineland, commanded by his relative Quintus Petillius Cerialis. The legions XVI Gallica and IV Macedonica, which had guarded Mainz, were renamed (XVI Flavia Firma and IV Flavia Felix); the remains of I Germanica were added with Galba's Seventh legion and became known as VII Gemina ('the twin legion'). V Alaudae and XV Primigenia, however, were never reconstituted.

Thus in 125 CE there's no Legio V Alaudae, Legio XV Primigenia, Legio IV Macedonica, Legio XVI Gallica, Legio I Germanica.

There's also no Legio I Macriana Liberatrix, which was extremely short-lived:
This legion was recruited in 68 by Lucius Clodius Macer, the governor of Africa, who wanted to use it, together with III Augusta, in the struggle against the emperor Nero. After his suicide, the new emperor Galba distrusted Macer and ordered the procurator Trebonius Garutianus to kill the commander of the two legions - which he did. The new legion was disbanded.
It is likely that Vitellius, who succeeded Galba in 69, briefly recreated the legion. However, his death and the accession of Vespasian meant the end of the attempt to build a second African legion.
So Legio I Macriana Liberatrix existed for no more than year, maybe year and a half, but no more.

Legions: XVII, XVIII and XIX have been utterly destroyed in September of 9 CE, under Varus, in (un)famous battle in the Teutoburg Forest (Teutoburger Wald). They have never been reconstituted again.
