Thread: special edition units in mp

Default special edition units in mp

i've read a bit here and there, funny how there is not a lot of consistent info that i can find about this topic. are the special units going to be available to everyone in mp? or just the folks who bought the units extra? if it's the latter, what sort of balance are we to expect?

    From the Steam FAQ:

When & where do these units appear in the game? (Multiplayer and single player battle modes) As long as you have properly unlocked these exclusive units through Steam, they will be available in multiplayer and single player battle modes when playing with the appropriate factions.

So uhm I guess that means you have to spend the money to get to use the units in MP. But a confirmation would be nice IMO. You never know if its just some screwup when FAQ was made.

Otherwise it is rather silly to force multiplayers to spend extra money. Good for CA's wallet I guess.

As I have said over in the SP forum, the units will most likely be given in a patch later anyway, or all CA is doing is splitting the MP community, either making Special Forces players only vs other SF players, or giving them an advantage.

Hm maybe in SP forum. Higher chance of a CA dev noticing it?

I would imagine they will be expensive anyway. The only format this will hurt MP in is tournaments with faction elimination.

Perhaps it will be the case that you can use the Special Units in MP, but only if you are matched against an opponent who also has them installed?

Or perhaps it really was an error in the FAQ. Because frankly this isn't a very sensible decision for CA to make.

From what I understand the Special Units are only special in the eyes of the beholder. They are a little historical spice, but that’s all! They do not have abilities beyond what is already available, so there are no imbalances created.

They just needed a little extra money is my guess, and I have no problem with that.

Without them, we would be playing…ah…hmmm...

    Nothing at all.

Quite right of course, CA deserve all the money they can get.

The units may be unbalanced however, because I think CA said somewhere that they are more powerful than a normal unit, and have special abilities.

    Found it: http://shoguntotalwar.yuku.com/topic/41604

    Hi guys,

We have made the Special Forces and Pre-order units available in multiplayer games and in skirmish modes (one-off custom battles) from the very start of the game. Previously these units would only be available in the Grand Campaign mode once certain conditions were met.

All of the units are balanced so you have to pay more 'points' to field more powerful units in battles. There will of course be other, just-as-powerful units available to those players without the exclusive units.

    Thanks,

thanks tomi. i hope they are overpriced, like taking a kensai or hashishin... a fun unit, and deadly if used right, but not worth the time or cost. hopefully.

anyhoo i'm still not buying the game on release... my death knight is lvl 70....

edit: does ca take part in mp threads here or elsewhere for that matter? i don't follow the forums much anymore.

I have not seen them join the discussion in any mp threads, however, I do know that at least some of them do read and browse them.

how do you know that? are the topics not worthy of reply, or are they not willing to comment on mp? have they played mp since ever? do you remember when the old shogun mp community whipped the devs online?

They occasionally post a thread about MP but never have a discussion. Goat, that was like 6 years ago, CA is a different entity now.

I've pre-ordered standard edition not special one. Will there be any problems in multiplayer mode? Will I be able to join matches hosted by those who will have special edition installed? Can anyone one answer me on this? Thanks.
