I'll get straight to the point: Can I pull this off? If so, what could I possibly wear with it? Even if your answer to #1 is no, humor me and answer #2 anyway.

I think the color is more of an issue than the hat itself. Red restricts your options unless that hat is for a particular outfit or occassion.

I agree, with hats you should go for neutral colors like white, grey, black or brown. If you really want to have color that is different try to stay on the darker side of things, a dark color looks much better and goes with much more than a light color for instance.

Anyways- I really haven't got a solid idea of what that hat goes with. Possibly a red shirt and black tie with that suit, perhaps.

I'm a big fan of hats, and I wear them whenever I can get away with it. That said, yeah, the color is a problem. In my experience brimmed hats should be black, gray or another such subdued color.

If you want something bright, your best bet for getting away with it is a beret or a kangol-type thing like this.

And don't get me started on my secret love, pith helmets.

The bright color works if you are showing your sport team color at an event or in a play/movie, but not as a regular wardrobe item.

I have no doubt that I could pull off a more subdued color, but IMHO I've always been able to get away with a little bit more, fashion-wise, than my friends. Take the above picture, for example. I was quite pleased when I found out that one of the characters from Left 4 Dead 2 was wearing the exact same outfit (minus the blood).

I guess this might be pushing the envelope a bit too much, though?

I met my wife while I was going through a suede fedora period and the college girls of the time loved it (But in all fairness it was brown). It can definitely be done, you just have to have the panache to carry it through and an utter unconcern for what haters may say.

I still have the hat, much crumpled and shrunken by age and multiple moves across country. It served me well.

I will say don't suddenly show up at bars where people know you with a new style like that, go to new places and meet new people.

edit: As far as what I wore with it, the same things I always wore; random t-shirts, slacks, and a beaten up brown leather jacket. You should probably drift more towards the look you have above, we're built differently. I would suggest something other than white for your jacket unless you've recently gotten a tan (no offense).

...I should further add that I'm currently sporting a mohawk (And pulling it off decently if the local MILFs are to be believed) so you might not want my fashion advice!

I would say pulling that hat off is mostly about confidence... aslong as you feel good in it it will look ok (assuming the rest of the outfit works)

Is your personality/demeanor such that you can wear that hat and the bold clothing to go with it, without coming off as ostentatious?

Location/context is important. A red fedora screams "Notice Me!", so you don't want to hide in transportation; it demands a walk-about, and a confident, but distracted, cool demeanor - as if you hadn't noticed that you accidentally put the red one on today.

Deep South: they'll assume you're a cocky Yankee, out to stir up trouble
West Texas: they'll wonder why your brim is so small
