Thread: Matchlock/Archer ashigaru, samurai and monk

Default Matchlock/Archer ashigaru, samurai and monk

I recently bought Shogun Total War 2 a few weeks ago and got into multiplayer and I'm just wondering, what are their differences and does the monk's stats outweigh it's extra cost?

depends on your build and what game mode (whether avatar or classic mode) and map of course. But generally speaking, bow ashis are cheap and you can mass them, but don't expect them to be too hardcore. Bow samis have very strong armor and can last a while. Bow Monks have less men than bow samis but their high morale and shooting stats makes them a killer unit. They do pack a punch for quite the heavy price.

Ideally, combining bow monks and samis seems to work quite well.

Also it may be worth while keeping in mind that bow samurai can be odered to melee attack, if you are in a pinch and need some extra hands (albeit not as strong as katana troops). Bow ashigaru will only fight melee in self defence and are probably completely useless once their arrows are spent.

Not sure what bow monks will do in melee, but their extra range means that if you have them and your opponent does not, you can just sit comfortably and pick off his archers from afar. I had that one happen to me a few times

Generally I prefer matchlock warrior monks along with matchlock ashigaru, the high morale of the monks complements the high numbers of the ashigaru

I dont use matchlock WM's, mainly because i use them to counter an infantry charge. Only if i hide them in the forest...... then MWM's could be very usefull (i must say.... the new "heavy gunners" are my favorite hide-in-forest unit

About the BWM's (bow warrior monks), I can say that they are totally worth their cost in a skirmish-type battle. In siege if you have the increased range upgrade, it would be a crime not to use them^^
