Default XP32bit, ATI HD 4650 CTD

    Hi,

rather new to the forum; would love to play on my "newer" machine; tried catalyst 9.4, CTD starting battles (most times first, sometimes second battle) or returning to Campaign map after battle. Tried 9.5, same result - only once it even CTDed loading campmap.
    Any suggestions?
    greetings daigaku

After Axalon´s advice, tried new catalyst 12.3; first hour good playing with terrible lag loading and leaving battle screen; after about 1.30h CTD leaving battle. Once more: Please, any advice?

    greetings daigaku

I'm sorry if I missed this, but what game is this about?

sorry for this lapsus - it´s M:TW/VI v.2.01, known for it´s buggyness with newer hardware/OSes. Wanted to play on newer machine than PIII/850, GF2 TI ;-))

Thanks for your interest, and if you´ve got any solution I´d dance with joy ;-)))))

    greetings, daigaku

Can I ask what your motherboard and cpu are? I don't know how relevant that info will be but you have a similar graphics card to mine (HD4850) but I'm Win 7 64 bit. My MTW (no VI) isn't 100% reliable, it sometimes CTDs when exiting battles or loading campaigns. It's not as bad as your's though.
Since we're here might as well do this properly. How much RAM have you got and what resolutions are you using?
Currently day dreaming about having the funding and man power to port MTW to mobiles. Whole and unaltered.

    Hi,
    okay, here specs of interest:

    Gigabyte EP31-DS3L Mainboard

    Intel Core2Duo 2x2,66GHz

    2GB RAM

    ATI Radeon HD 4650/1GB

Res. 1280x1024/16bit, as desktop (genuine res. of monitor)

    WinXP32bitSP3

As stated in the REDUX-debug thread, with my old machine (meanwhile 14years old!!) no problems, AND I found the solution for the choppy battles; so the problem isn´t that burning any more, but if that comp goes the way of everything I´d like to still have the chance to play the most beloved ;-)) game I ever played...

so again thanks for interest and the will to help,

    greetings from Blackforest daigaku

What is the solution for choppy battles?

I was going to suggest that you artificially lower your RAM because medieval doesn't like more than 2GB, but since you are playing on 1280x1024 your copy doesn't seem to mind (you can only go up to 1024x860 if it does).

Just to make sure it isn't a resolution problem can I get you to follow the instructions on my thread here? Basically make sure you can launch the campaign and battles while in this mode. If not then lower the resolution and/or try the button fix. I just have sneaky suspicion your monitor might not be EXACTLY 1280x1084 and that can make medieval unhappy.

    Hi, Dellathane,

the solution for the battles was quite easy: in BIOS, reduced the "AGP Aperture Size" to the available min. of 4MB, in game "options" reduced "AGP memory" to zero. Seems the "shared" memory (still SDRAM,133) was too slow - and I had thought before, more mem would be more speed ;-))

btw, playing both machines on the same monitor, with same res. - so that´s not the thing to look for....seems really to be the compatibility with the XP/driver combination which doesn´t work (old machine still win98SE!!)
sure won´t change to win7 (where Axalon got his REDUX really going) - fed up with macrohard spy politics aso....

but, as stated, no burning prob ´cos the 14 year olde stuff still rocks ;-)) The Moment I had posted I was desperate ´cos of the battles in REDUX I had to try out to know the goods and bads of different units - that solved, at the moment I´m satisfied playing along; but one day the machine will give in, and then?!?

    greetings daigaku

I'll be honest here i'm not too sure what else to suggest. It seems obvious that it is mostly a graphics problem since updating your drivers actually helped. My last guess before handing on to someone else who knows more about directdraw/x would be to try the "golden options" for Nvidia cards here and see if it helps your ATI at all.

    Hi,

tried all of them - no chance to get the game running stable :-(( as Axalon stated, on his win7-machine there is no problem - but I´ll never go for that. Maybe I should try to get an old ABIT BX-133 with a GF4 and a PIII/1,1GHz for future security, again running win98SE ;-))
btw, anybody got something like that around here?!?

    keep playing everybody, greetings daigaku

ps. do have real fun with the REDUXed Norse ;-)))
