The art of war, then, is governed by five constant
factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations,
when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.
These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth;
(4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.

For MP I'd say missile fire and skirmishing in general becomes less effective as the battles become bigger/more expensive. In a 10k Denarii battle having some Cretian Archers and slingers really makes or breaks your game. In a 30k battle where everyone is gold/gold you're better of with infantry/cav.
I'm hoping for more realistic armies in Rome II, where all the troop types have a role to fill and thus a mixed force is usually better.

Rome, their units own, standard infantry have a missile attack, and using a checkerboard formation is a lot more flexible than phalanx. I use it with any faction that is not phalanx-based. Enemy seems to rout faster if I use checkerboard, maybe that is because I can maneuver my units into favorable positions. Best line infantry (Legionary Cohort), best standard cav (Legionary Cav), good archers (Archers Auxilia), good siege, decent skirmishers, good basic infantry (Auxilia).
