    Default Berserkers appreciation thread

Too many times I hear about spartan spam in MP or about annoying legionaires in SP. There exists a universal answer to those, and i'm actualyl sorry I never got to play a serious Germania campaign due to the bad infrastructure and boring building options.

I will give them a try in Rome II, though I suspect the Berserkers there will be a tad more... modest of a unit.

Yeah, those guys were pretty mean.

It's been a veery long time now, but iirc they were strictly limited in (or in some cases even banned from) MP matches, due to being too much chuck norris

Never liked that anime.... oh wait. Total War. Never really got into MP. Never thought they were that big an issue but MP has a way of doing that.

How do people ban them from MP matches? ^^

And yeah, they're less amazing in R2.

    Very impressive. But.....

........being a "horse archer wannabee" when playing a barbarian faction, I use those "other" Roman killers.....Chosen Archers

When fronted by Spear Warbands, and Gothic Cavalry roaming the flanks, there really isn't much for my spears or axmen to do before melee ensues, because at least half the enemy are already dead

Yes, I know, this is a berserker appreciation thread and I just them......so sue me

Yes but... If you're playing MP and some kid comes wtih 20 spartan units, won't it be fun to couner with 20 units of 'zerkers

RS why do you disfavor them? (is that even a word)

AFAIR, this "ban" on zerkers was agreed upon between "decent" players, who would also frown on things like spartan/cretan/urban spam, noob box etc.
People who would be more interested in pitching balanced armies against each other than in pwning their opponent.

    Those were the days...

Disfavor is probably a bit strong. It's more my playstyle. Zerkers may be good for crushing elite units, but they are not very flexible and are vulnerable to arrow fire. Plus, they take 2 turns to recruit, IIRC. With Germania's piss-poor economy at the start, I use the Freyja temple in every starting city but Mogontiacum and Damme just to get the populations up. And being a cavalry man, I just have to have Gothic Cavalry, which means the temple of Woden. And the +3 exp bonus for Woden ain't bad either

I know it's an old thread, but hey, who cares?

I have done one-on-ones, and berserkers can defeat Armoured Elephants, though it is not given. The Elephants can shock them out of Berserkergang, as can a good pike unit. As far as the elephants go, it depends on how the ellies react and attack. If the Berserkers are clustered and the elephants gather around and attack them, the Zerkers are done. I also beat a unit of berserkers with one unit of Legionary Cohort, though the Cohort lost half the unit.

However, since it is a Berserker Appreciation thread...

I wanted to do Berserkers vs Screeching Women, but the game would not let me do Germans v Germans. They also own Companion Cav, but can definitely lose to Cataphracts. All my tests were done on Medium difficulty, so no bonuses/penalties to either side. Also, most of these were not playing too much with the upgrades to weapons/armour/experience, sometimes giving slight upgrades to one or both sides. I usually gave the Zerkers one or two experience, since that is what they seem to have anyway, no other upgrades.

    Then imitate the action of the tiger;
