On the west front of Wells Cathedral is a statue with great helm with a single broad eye-slit reinforced at the edges by an additional piece of metal which also runs down the front of the helmet. A war elephant scene in a bestiary, Harley MS 4751, has simillar great helms. This has a similar compostion to a war elephant scene in the Rochester Bestiary, but, the great helms in this have divided eye slits. The other knight statue on Wells Cathedral also has a divided eye-slit on his great helm.
Are there other primary sources for early great helms with a single eye-slit?
