    Default Announcement: Europa Barbarorum 2.1b is released!

    Greetings fans of Europa Barbarorum!

    The day has come. Lots of people thought Europa Barbarorum II was dead, that it had become vapourware - they couldn't be more wrong. After the previous major release, 2.01, we went away and got to work on just about everything. We've been previewing and testing and announcing about this since the summer (yes, we know this is six months later than originally billed). We listened to feedback, we trialled and tested fixes and new features; we now have completely reworked mechanics, over 70 new units, new buildings and settlement maps, new videos, music and audio, a new UI, the list goes on. We said autumn, and this is indeed the very last day of autumn.

    THIS RELEASE IS NOT SAVEGAME COMPATIBLE

    This is a complete and new set of files that are in no way compatible with any previous 2.01 or 2.01-based installation.

    The instructions come in three parts please make sure you follow them all. The mod is in two parts; the main file itself (3.94GB) and the 2.1b patch (41.7MB). If you had any idea how painful it's been trying to distribute the main mod file, you'll understand why we haven't tried to update it with the new material in the patch. You need the patch as well, not only does it correct a lot of stuff, it also prevents several crash-causing bugs.

    Pre-installation instructions

    1) If you are a Steam user, and your M2TW is in Program Files or Program Files (x86) you need to move your game, or reinstall it outside of that folder. This isn't negotiable, you will not be able to patch or otherwise modify your EBII if the game is installed there. The official instructions on how to move a game are here. If those do not work, try these instead.

    2) If you are not a Steam user, but you have M2TW installed in Program Files or Program Files (x86) you need to move your game, or reinstall it outside of that folder. For exactly the same reasons as above.

    Optional: Re-install M2TW. Then start a campaign to make sure it's all still working. If you have other mods active, you won't want to do this, but it will likely result in a cleaner experience.

    3) You must have Kingdoms installed - at least one of the mods, though not necessarily all of them. EBII needs the kingdoms.exe to run.

    Installation instructions

    1. Download the EBII installer using one of the provided download links.

    2. Uninstall the previous version of EBII (there's a shortcut for it in your start menu).

    3. The downloaded file is a zip archive, which means you need to unpack the installer files from the zip file. Windows Explorer should allow you to simply copy the contents out. If not, you can download 7-zip for the purpose.

    4. Run EBII.exe.

    5. Step through the install wizard. Make sure the installer is pointed at your M2TW directory - you may need to change it from the default if it is pointing at Program Files.

    6. Wait for the installer to copy all the files.

    7. If you have never run M2TW vanilla after installing it, run that now. Start a campaign, then quit.

    8. Run the mod using the shortcut placed in your start menu or desktop. Start a campaign, then quit.

    9. Make sure your error log is working properly so you can properly report any issues. Go into [your M2TW directory]\mods\EBII\EBII.cfg and make sure under [log] it says:

    Code:
    to = mods/ebii/logs/eb.system.log.txt
    level = * trace
    This means the log will be stored as eb.system.log.txt in [your M2TW directory]\mods\EBII\logs\ - we will need this log any time you report an error. No log, no resolution, for the most part.

    Report your errors in the EB Bug Reports and Technical Help forum, not in this thread.

    10. It's highly recommended that you play with windowed, borderless mode - this both improves campaign performance and increases stability too. In the same config file as above, ensure these values:

    Code:
    [video]
    windowed = 1
    borderless_window = 1
    If "1" doesn't work, try "true" instead. Note you'll have to enter your native resolution in there to get a proper-sized window. You also need to ensure your medieval2.preferences.cfg doesn't have conflicting values.

    Post-installation instructions

    1. Download the patch and apply. Make sure you point it at [your M2TW directory]\mods\EBII\ folder Note that the first time you run a campaign (or start a custom battle) it will take anywhere up to 5-10 minutes - it has not frozen. Be patient, let it finish.

    2. If you interrupt the first campaign, you will break the map. Re-patch, start a new game again, and WAIT. It only has to do this once.

    Links

    Currently, we have only torrents of the files, but hope to add more options soon. The links are here - remember you need both files:

    EBII v2.1 Main Download
    Primary torrent
    FTP link

    EBII v2.1b Patch
    Primary torrent
    FTP link
    Gamefront

    Please keep seeding these when you get them, so everyone else can share. We're looking into some other means (FTP, Moddb, etc) as well.

    If you have the means to host the files, please do so and share the link - I'll update this post with it.

    Change List

    The changelist since 2.01 is vast, probably in the range of about 8000 line-items which I doubt anyone wants to read through in detail. For now, there's just a blank box below. Later on (because I figure you'd all rather get this sooner, than wait for me to compile a summary of the changes) I'll update the spoiler box with a summary of what's changed. Needless to say, the short answer is "a lot".

    Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Summary Changelist to follow...

    _XI. A NOTE ON IMAGE SOURCES

    Europa Barbarorum II uses images from a wide variety of sources, either to inspire our own derivative work or the original images themselves, modified or altered to some degree. Should image owners recognize their work, we will either credit it specifically, if missing, or remove it at your request.

    Yughues aka Nobiax(at shareCg) and Roma Surrectum II team for some their wonderful vegetation models.

    the 0AD Team for allowing the use of some of their soundtracks.

    the De Bello Mundi mod team for graciously allowing us to use their settlement models and onager.
    the Rusichi mod team for allowing us to use the horses animations.

    johnwhile for his tools and support offered, they were crucial in our modelling and animation phases.

    www.ancientlyre.com for the wonderful ancient music.

    wilddog and makanyane for their help with terrain, vegetation, porting of settlement models, and solving settlement-related bugs and CTDs.

    LordOfTheEmos for his jungle tree texture

    the Org staff for their help and hosting our internal fora.

    the Total War Center staff for their support with our fora.

    Ludens for moderating our fora, having graciously accepted our request to do so.

    the always supportive Tosa Inu, who sadly did not live to see the day of our release.

    EB2 has had a lot of contributors come and go over a long time, and the current team has probably forgotten about some of those along the way. If your own contribution has been forgotten (and you want to be listed in the credits), please contact us in the forum and we will sort it out.

    And a very special thank you to the people who this modification was created for: the keyboard consuls, screen watching strategoi, philosophising players and mouse clicking chieftains. Thank you to every fan of Europa Barbarorum, whoever you are and wherever you are. Thank you for sharing in our passion, thank you for supporting us and above all, we hope you have fun.

    We also thank the following for inspiration: Monty Python, Caesar 3, Gladiatus, 0 A.D.

    Thank you from the Europa Barbarorum II Team

    Special mentions also go to all the people who've been invaluable acting as playtesters in the long-running testing cycle. You've been tireless in finding bugs, checking things work, making suggestions and for a select group, seeding the mod so everyone can get it. Thank you.

    And finally...

    In closing - EBII is by no means complete. We are not finished. We are perhaps halfway now - what we still need, what we always need, are more willing volunteers. If you are a 3D artist able to work with 3DS Max, or a 2D artist who can work to instructions, we want you. If you have a knowledge in ancient history and a desire to contribute, we want you. If you are a scripter or coder, and have some familiarity with the files used here (compiled with C++ I believe), we want you. If you can proofread and edit XML files accurately, we want you. If you can playtest the ever-living crap out of a game, then do it all over again after a minor change, we want you. If you like the mod, and are eager to learn how to do something that can help to contribute, we want you. Apply here.

    As ever, thank you for your support and remember to read more history.

    It began on seven hills - an EB 1.1 Romani AAR with historical house-rules (now ceased)
    Heirs to Lysimachos - an EB 1.1 Epeiros-as-Pergamon AAR with semi-historical houserules (now ceased)
    Philetairos' Gift - a second EB 1.1 Epeiros-as-Pergamon AAR

    Hello guys, I finally registered after reading Quintus' post. Thank you for the wonderful mod (rather, completely new game). I spent many hours on EB I and have started with EB II, for some weeks.

    When I read "proofread" in the first post I thought: well, finally I can do something. However, right now I read a bit further, and it is about XML documents.. duh. Is proof-reading for the normal description texts even wanted? Because I have seen quite some things that could be corrected in the descriptions. And be it just a formatting or superfluous Element in it.

    Anyway, Dling like mad right now. :)

    Oh and Merry Christmas for you guys and a Happy New Year. You deserve it. Modders have provided me with awesome stuff in the last years (You and one other Mod with stompy robots).

    Regular proofreading is fine, though it's more useful if you can actually apply the edits to the files (which are in xml).

    It's been years since I posted here, but I have been quietly and devoutly playing every single EB game since the very first, almost a full decade ago... (My goodness it has been SO LONG!) Three cheers for EB2! And have a merry Christmas and a happy new year! :D

    Indeed! Good to see you too, Ibrahim. My life has been through many stages but there have only been two constants: my family, and EB. So that's really something. :)

    Code:
    [video]
    windowed = 1
    borderless_window = 1
    If "1" doesn't work, try "true" instead. Note you'll have to enter your native resolution in there to get a proper-sized window. You also need to ensure your medieval2.preferences.cfg doesn't have conflicting values.

    What lines do I need to add for the video resolution? ie ??? = 1920 x 1024 etc?

    Thanks

    They are in these two lines (mine are actually in my medieval2.preferences.cfg):

    Code:
    battle_resolution = 1920 1080
    campaign_resolution = 1920 1080
    Change them to whatever is correct for your monitor.

    Not a bug but I note that enemy assassins are a lot harder to kill and are very effective. A KH assassin with 4 exp seems to have a roughly 1/3rd chance of completely destroying a market* despite there being a friendly spy present. In the early game as Epeiros I can't afford to keep up with repairing them and I can't recruit enough spys to protect each of my cities even if they were a reliable counter (which they can be when they are very experienced) - I have reached my agent limit - which might be related to the number of functioning markets... I think there is something circular here! I wonder if anyone else is having trouble with the the little arsonists!
    * That is on alternate turns it has no effect, completely destroys a market or half destroys a market.

    Are there any recommended game/battle settings?

    Played about 40 turns as Epiros. Bought stone throwers and Oxybeles and had a ball. The artillery was very effective when used sensibly both attacking and defending in open and siege battles - but especially the latter. Really nice to have access to most of the Epirote roster from the start.

    Hi guys,

    this is my second one post. As I told before , I am quite unexpert with installation, codes... so I cannot understand how to move my game from Program files to another folder ( I am not using steam for it) since when I click on the linked FAQ it explains just how to move a Steam's game, would somebody help me with that please ? I hope you will answer to me. Thank you.

    I'd suggest just to delete it and reinstall in another folder.

    Thumbs up Re: Announcement: Europa Barbarorum 2.1b is released!

    A big thank you to the whole team, who worked so hard to make this release possible.
    Last week I finally got around playing 2.1b and it's great. I am more than ten hours in a Makedon campaign and it feels like EB1, though with better grafic and overall improved system.
    The large testing and constant improving you did during the second half of last year really paid off. The game is a lot of fun to play and despite some small issues feels much more balanced and complete than for example R2TW ...

    Again thanks for your hard work to make this happen!

    Congratulations, and thanks to everyone in the team - I'm 100 turns into a Hayasdan game on v2.1b and enjoying it immensely.

    Quick question about logs: I've carefully followed step 9 in the Installation Instructions, but the file isn't created. Anyone else have the same experience?

    Try creating the folder yourself. It worked for me afterwards
