Good universal historical sites?

Well, I was wondering where you people get all your historical information from. Doesn't necessarily have to be a site detailing all of history, but I am looking for stuff like that.

For instance, a site with information and possible pictures about all players in the European Middle ages, as an example.

Also I'd like to know where people like Ludens and kataphraktoi got all that historical information for their stories.
