The papers and other artefacts include a first sketch of Sherlock Holmes in the novel A Study in Scarlet.

The papers, found in the offices of a London legal firm, went missing during a dispute over his estate 40 years ago.

The collection, valued at about £1.5m, is on display at Christie's in London - it will be auctioned on 19 May.


Personal effects

The collection of 3,000 items includes personal letters and hand-written manuscripts - 80% of which have never been published.

But of course, my dear Watson, yet it's a long walk to London, so I think I'll pass… I just reread some Sherlock Holmes stories some week ago, so that will have to suffice.

PS I went hilarious each time where Conan Doyle used the phrase He ejaculated in surprise… That old English gentlemen, I mean really…

Ah, I love Holmes. I also loved Basil Rathbone's portrayal of him. Interesting, the Royal chemistry society made Holmes an honorary member.
