Gawian, i dont think most people are moderates cause they can look at both sides of the issue. I consider myself a moderate cause i stand with the conservatives on certain issues even though i am much more towards being a liberal,no same , than to being a conservative.
    .

OK I stand with liberals on some issues.
    Does make me a moderate?

By the defintion used everyone is a moderate. No one considers themselves an extremist. I dont think anyone here is an idealog. Were all pretty intelligent.

I agree statistics can be used to justify a lot of things. However, all I am asking here is for a "Declaration" that you are a "Moderate".

As you know, I have accepted your viewpoint from time to time and understood where you were coming from in past threads.

Well I am a moderate. A moderate conservative that is. So in reality all one has to do to be a moderate is declare oneslef to be one.

As you know, I have accepted your viewpoint from time to time and understood where you were coming from in past threads.
If anyone here could call himself a moderate it would be you IMO. But as you change and take positions you will drift in one direction or the other. Most people become more and more conservative as they grow older.

Depends, you seem pretty conservative to me...

on a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being extreme liberal, 10 being extreme conservative,
the moderate range is probably 4 to 6. I would consider myself a 4 probably.
So, Gwain i cant tell you if your a moderate, it depends on where you would put yourself in that scale.

    Moderate: The opposite of extremist.

Someone who will talk to you about politics rather then kill you for not agreeing with them. Also someone who believes in the freedom of speech and does not agree with suppressing it because what is being said is not what they agree with.

Someone who uses reason rather then kowtowing to an absolute knowledge set.

    etc

    Oh dear.

Gawain is as much of a moderate as I am.

Exactly. You are a four are you not. Really though Jag you have few if any conservative values while there are quite a few liberal ideas I support.

When you join you can refute his "membership", but as he declared he "is", I will reserve judgement. His peers in this group can decide his fate.

I think Gawain adds legitimacy to the club, otherwise it would seem like the "Liberals pretending to be moderates" club.

Ill have to withdraw my application as I wont change my title, but good luck to you all.

I would not consider myself a moderate. Also Moderators have no ability to warn outside of their respective forums.

Reserve judgment all you like, you can't stop him posting here anyway, just noting how funny it is that is all.

Gawain I have plenty of 'traditional Conservative views', we merely do not talk about them as much as my very strong lefty views on a majority of issues, of which normally come up on this board. However, I would not kid myself and simply because I hold a couple of 'traditional Conservative views', I am automatically a moderate. I am not, I am a Socialist and damn proud.

Thanks JAG, point of view noted.

As I said, start a thread, let us discuss it.

As for you, what are your 'lefty' views?

And don't list legalising things such as prostitution and weed, they are moral issues completely seperate of political stance, it is only in the US that they are seen as a left / right thing. Which is absurd.

    Pi, e or a prime like 7.

I just think the scale automatically creates a sense of opposites when they are not neccesarily diameterically opposed. It is a bit short sighted to sum up the entire politcal thought of a person as a 9 point scale.

A one dimensional scale can hardly do justice to the enormous amount of political systems that have existed, do exist and may exist in the future.

For instance from an outsiders point of view Democrats and Republicans are a lot more closer in political stance then say Democrats and Labour Party of Britain.

Even the term Liberal means different things in different nations. In Australia the Liberals are the Conseratives...

Pape is completely right, there are so many issues that someone who you believe is put into one pigeon hole, can be looked upon in a totally different light when it comes to something else.

Patrons here like Ichi and Beirut, from one thread to the next, when looking at the different issues could be seen as cast iron lefties or righties and things really do change hugely from one country to the next. A Swedish Conservative would very likely look like a very liberal American in most cases.

Although having said that, Pape most definitely is a 7
