I kept meaning to post here and actually ask if this could be made an exception and get stickied before the last few posts. The main reason imho, is that this thread will only flourish if people see it and contribute and of course there's much less chance of that happening with it getting buried like this.

    So, pwetty pwease?

Edit: To boot, anyone not wanting a sticky-cluttered forum look can just click the 'Show/Hide Sticky Threads' button on the upper right area of the forum.

I would like to officially ask nicely that this thread be singled out in all its luminous as a sticky. I'm not entirely sure how to convey niceness, beyond saying that I think everyone here is spiffy, and Beirut is a lovely human being.

A search engine for your machine. It's way better than the integrated
windows search. I've tested it for the last month and I've to say that it
saves a lot of time if you have thousands of pdf's and html's to search.

    Copernic Desktop Search

    OS: Windows
    Freeware: yes
Description: Copernic Desktop Search (CDS) brings the power of a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use search engine right to your PC and allows you instantly to search files, emails, and email attachments stored anywhere on your PC hard drive. It executes sub-second searching of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, Acrobat PDFs, and all popular music, picture and video formats. CDS also conducts a desktop search of your browser history, favorites, and contacts.
    Homepage: http://www.copernic.com/en/products/...rch/index.html

    Steganos LockNote

    OS: Windows
    Freeware: yes
    Open Source: yes
    Homepage: http://sourceforge.net/projects/locknote
Description: Store your most valuable notes in a LockNote. Hide your everyday notes in a safe place. Application and document in one: the mechanism to encrypt and decrypt a note is part of it. Secure, simple, independent. No installation required.

Oh, btw, I second the notion to sticky this.

Agreed, but there is still merit in keeping a clean forum regardless of the individual's ability to customize it afterwards.

Anyone know a free(obviously), non-destructive, reliable disk partition resizing utility for XP/NTFS? My home theatre PC has about 10GB of unpartitioned space that Id love to spread around to other partitions, but I dont want anything flaky, since I have gigs of TV shows that I dont want to lose.

Don't know how courageous or tech-savy you are.
The Knoppix live CD brings a Partition Magic clone called qtpart. I've heard it's easy to use but when starting the CD via qemu it fails to mount my hd at all. And after half an hour trying to mount it I gave up. I guess you need to boot right into it.
Anyway, peeps on the Knoppix/linux boards are saying it's straight forward and easy to use. It even brings a similar gui.
    Hope that helps.

Selling a computer or tossing a hard drive? Use Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN) to permanently wipe your files.

It's just a bootable floppy that lets you quickly wipe your hard drive by overwriting with zeros, or, if youre real paranoid, it supports DoD level specs with multiple passes writing random data. Good stuff.

Xiahou, I've found this : Partion Resizer . I had used the program long ago. Therefore I can't be helpful if it is effective and efficient Anyway, you asked for a freeware partition tool. And here it is. Hope it helps, and I'm sure that you won't start off before backing up.

    Battle for Wesnoth:

Give ChaosLord the credit for this one- he posted it in the Arena.

The graphics are 2d and dated but the gameplay itself is rather fun and there seems to be alot of campaigns available as well as a good multiplayer community for the game. Its also free and meant to stay that way apparently, so its nice not to worry about having to pay for a beta game. Anyway, if anyone is interested check out the game at http://www.wesnoth.org.

Edit: Description and features for the game, taken from its website.

    What is battle for Wesnoth?
    _______________________
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme.

Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.

Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands … Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios – or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends – or strangers – and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.

    Features:
    ________
Build up a formidable fighting force, starting from a single leader and a small amount of gold.
Over 200 unit types in six major factions, all with distinctive abilities, weapons and spells.
Experienced units gain powerful new abilities as they advance.
Several multi-player options available, including internet play.
Scores of different custom-designed maps, and unlimited random maps.
Hundreds of campaign scenarios available for download via a simple in-game procedure.
'Fog of war' feature available for a true test of generalship.
Sophisticated mark-up language lets advanced users make their own maps, factions or campaigns.
Excellent language support – 20 different languages currently available.
GNU/Linux, Windows, MacOSX, BeOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD compatible.
For being Open-Source/home brew, I think this game is just great.

    CrystalPlayer
OS: Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP
    Open Source: No
    Has a free version

I got it in the first place because it allows you to load the subtitles if they are in a seperate file. I made it my default video player because it loads movies quickly and cleanly, switches back and forth from full screen to regular like magic, has easy access controls for adjusting brightness and audio, and in general is just a very good player.

OpenOffice has the Impress tool, which is their PowerPoint clone. Never used the Impress tool myself, but I think you can export the presentation to PowerPoint format.

My advice to everyone would be to download as many of these tools as you can now, there is no telling how long they will remain online. Mark says the Sysinternals site will remain around "for a while". Better get while the getting is good though. I will probably be downloading everything I can get my hands on and burning a CD with all the utils. The only good that can come out of this is that Vista benefits from Mark and Bryce's experience...

I'll have to check and see if my suite is complete.
I do not intend to jump on the vista wagon on release day, instead i'll be running XP until vista is mandatory for any directx version that's mandatory for any Total War version.
