incompatible?

Did you get the game via Steam? There is a problem in that these users cannot play with people who bought the game in a shop.

Is it possible you are using a mod or have somehow changed the game's files?

I modded to 2 turns a year
didnt think that would effect it though cause its only on the campaign data
bought it in a shop
its limited adition but that shouldnt matter

Undo the mod and see if that allows you to play with other people. If you can, problem fixed.

I am not sure what files you can change and still play multiplayer and which you cannot change to be able to play multiplayer. Though, if that is the only thing you have changed, then GreyFox is probably correct.

Shouldnt think that would matter. I modded same thing but I have little problems joining/hosting online.

It shouldn't affect MP at all. It's SP campaign files, same as unlocking all factions or installing Regnum Dei

Possibly the mod installed balance changes? Or maybe its pre-patch region differences?

My own information, I have beat victory conditions on Long but not actually gotten beyond 1746 the current year.
