Default Court of the Caliph: BC Hotseat Council Thread

    The Abbasid Caliph's Palace, Baghdad

In times past when the Abbasid Caliphs ruled over the lands of the faithful, provincial governors and satraps would journey to the Court of the Caliph for the shura, or consultation, between the Defender of the Faith and the ummah.

Although those days are but a memory, and the Caliphate a shadow of its former self, the tradition of the Court at Baghdad acting as a focal point for negotiations and announcements between nations of the region has persisted, and emissaries of the disparate peoples of the ummah continue to gather there to do business, gossip and make threats and declarations.

The current Caliph, weary of strife and keen to restore the Caliphate's leading role among the nations of the Dar al-Islam through religious instruction, diplomacy and trade, has encouraged this practice - and to that end has even invited the Kings of the Christian nations of the West to send their representatives to Baghdad.

An uneasy truce is maintained at the Court between the rival factions and freedom of speech and open negotiation is encouraged.

Angry Re: Court of the Caliph: BC Hotseat Council Thread

    The Caliph's Court, Baghdad

The Roman ambassador angrily storms in followed by a cohort of advisors, servants and bodyguards. Brazenly addressing the Caliph he exclaims:

"How dares the Arab Basileos send threats to the Roman People! Conflict with the Turkish invaders of Anatolikon is inevitable and entirely to blame on their illegitimate occupation of our ancestral land and holy cities! The Arabs should do well to remember that in the New Rome they deal with a people and a religion much older then their own and show us the respect that we are due."

Having shocked the court, the ambassador marches out amid the protests of various cheikhs and emirs.

The Caliph's Vizier rises to address the Court

The Caliph assumes the Roman is referring to a recent communication sent to all of the Kings of the West, in which it was stated:

"The Caliph warns the Christian Kings that no unprovoked attacks on Islamic nations or further incursions on Islamic territories will be tolerated."

The Caliph would remind the Roman King that in the same communication he clearly stated that the Caliphate does not intend to wage a war against the Christian kingdoms, and that he also offered to act as an objective mediator in any disputes between the peoples of the book.

There is no implied threat in the Caliph's words, only the assertion, which should be already evident to all, that the Defender of the Faith cannot in good conscience let nations of the ummah suffer unprovoked attack and invasion by aggressors of any faith without trying his utmost to prevent it.

The Caliph considers all nations of the faithful, even those unrepresented at this Court like the Turkish and Ayyubid Sultanates, to be under his spiritual protection.

The Caliph seeks to forestall the need for violence by offering the possibility of peaceful negotiation between the ummah and the Christian nations, and welcomes constructive proposals from their Kings.

Let the King of the Romans put forth a proposition for the Caliph and the other leaders of the Dar al-Islam to consider.

The Ghaznavid ambassador stands. Although he has a *Turkish accent, his clothing seems more Persian.

Isn't this "Turkish Sultanate" some sort of splinter from the nation of the Great Seljuks? While I am all too happy to see the Seljuk oppressors lose territory to rebellion, I can't help but think this Sultanate is as voracious as the nation they split from, and not worth the Caliph's protection.

    * The Ghaznavid ruling class was Turkish butheavily influenced by Persian culture. As for the accent, since this is Baghdad I figure Arabic is the lingua franca.

The thoughts of the Ghaznavids are noted. The Caliph would welcome input from the other leaders of the ummah, either in this forum or privately.

The ambassador from the Kingdom of Jerusalem rises from his position.

Jerusalem would like to announce to this court that we shall seize the rebellious settlements Baalbeck, Hama, Antioch, Aleppo and Edessa. We pray that no other ruler will contest these claims, but should that occur, we will negotiate with all to find a peaceful resolution.

However, we too note that the Abbasids have seemingly added to the tensions between the Christens and the Muslims, all-the-while under the guile of brokering peace between the two. Jerusalem will not tolerate Abbasid interference in matters not of their own. We suggest you look to your own borders and your own neighbors before you look outwards at others. War between Jerusalem and the Ayyubid Sultanate is inevitable and necessary, but it is our war, not the Abbasid's, so stay out.

    You have been warned.

It pains the Caliph greatly to hear that the King of Jerusalem is not prepared even to attempt to live at peace with his Muslim neighbours the Ayyubids.

Without even bothering to standup, the ambassador quietly addresses the court:

I think the Caliph had best learn a little about how to fight war - specifically what to do in situations when you are surrounded - before he feels any more "pain" about Jerusalem's situation.

A small, dust-covered man enters the Court, clearly having just arrived from a long journey. He kneels before the Caliph and says, 'My Lord, the Maharaja of the Solanki Rajputs, has sent me to ask if this Council is solely for the sons of Abraham? The Maharaja feels it would be profitable to open talks with the larger world regarding territorial and other claims.'

So saying the emissary bows his head and waits silently for an answer.

    Without rising to his feet the Rajput emissary turns and bows deeply to the Ghorid Sultan, saying;

'It will please my Lord to know that the very people he wishes to address are so well represented in these chambers. Be assured that when the time is right your concerns will be answered. If, in the meantime, you wish to heap abuse on this poor vessel of the words of the mighty Maharaja I can say without hesistation that this will distress him not one whit.'

Smiling graciously the diplomat returns his gaze to the Caliph.

The Maharaja's man is most welcome here at Baghdad, as are all men who come in peace and favour words over the cruel blade.

Let him convey his message in freedom, that we may be appraised of the mind of his Rajput lord.

I do not even know why I bothered to come here, a powerful Sultan's time is better spent killing Rajputs and spitting on the corpse of their mahagawhatever it is. The fools are too weak to do anything but con people out of their money, I can't stand their presence.

The Indian emissary bows again towards the Caliph without acknowledging the comments of the Ghorid Sultan,

'The Maharaja wishes to make it known that Delhi is currently under control of a branch of the Rajputs whom the Maharaja considers to be his wayward subjects. They will be returned to the fold very soon, and Shiva preserve any who seek to bar our intent there. Additionally all lands east and south of Delhi are Rajput lands. Enter them at your own risk.'

'Peace be unto you great Lords.'

The diplomat bows again to the Caliph before standing and retreating to one side of the chamber to await any further business.

The Ghaznavid representative bows to that of the Rajputs.

Shah Khusrau sends his welcome to the Maharaji and his servant. He would like it known that just as the Maharaji considers Delhi as a wayward subject, we have a similiar concern regarding the Malikate of Sindh. Since the Malikate is west of any north to south border drawn from Delhi, we are sure that this will not offend the mighty ruler of the Rajputs.

Once more he bows then returns to his seat.

A man wearing the blue and white colours of the Seljuks enters the court room. His towering presence immediately silences the gathered.

' I bring word from the Mighty Sultan in Rayy, leader of the Great Seljuks. He wishes to inform the Georgians that they shouldn't get in the way of Seljuk expansion in Azierbaijan and Eastern Anatolia. The people in these lands will bow to the Sultan, and if the Georgians don't want to share this fate they shouldn't try to get in our way. These words of warning should also be heeded by the Abbasids. Even though we are brothers of the same faith, Abbasid incursion in the lands rightfully Seljuk in Eastern Anatolia and to the east of Baghdad will not be taken lightly. The great Sultan, second to only Allah himself, prays that the Georgians and Abbasids will let wisdom lead the path, and therefor avoid unnecessary bloodshed. If they respect these words of warning, the Sultan has no intent on war with either. '

His eyes meet with the Caliph's and with a short nod, he takes an empty seat. The old man in the chair to his right hastily gets to his feet and finds an empty chair closer to the Caliph. The Seljuk crosses his arms over his chest and gazes around the room, trying to find someone bearing the Georgian colours.

    The Vizier rises, eyes ablaze

Who is the Seljuk king to refer to himself in the same breath as the most mighty Allah (his name be praised)?

Let not these blasphemous words be heard again in the court of the most noble Caliph, descended from the line of the Prophet himself, lest the Seljuks be struck down by the furious anger of heaven!

Let the Seljuks also refrain from speaking of lands which are "rightfully" theirs!

Only the munificence and wisdom of the peace-loving Caliph prevents him from claiming all the lands formerly under the protection of the Defender of the Faith, a mighty empire which stretched from Cordoba to Kabul and put even that of the Romans to shame!

Never in my long life have I heard such impertinence! Why...

The Caliph clears his throat and fixes the Vizier with a firm and meaningful gaze. The Vizier stops, and after listening to some whispered words from his master, collects himself, and continues..

The Caliph is pleased to hear that the Seljuks intend no warlike actions against the Caliphate, and will conduct private discussions with the Sultan regarding the lands east and northwest of Baghdad.

But let no man in this chamber mistake the tolerance and benevolence of the Caliph for weakness, lest he feel the righteous wrath of the Prince of the Two Seas.

The emissary of the Kingdom of Georgia rise calmly.

Although we do not wish war with the Great Seljuks, we cannot recognize their claims, knowing fully that in their hunger for conquest they will strike at us sooner our later.

In order to maintain our sovereignty we have entered in a defensive pact with the Ghaznavid Sultanate. The Great Seljuks should be warned that an attack against either of our country will amount to a declaration of war with both countries.

We do still hope that a peaceful resolution can be acheived, but to accept these terms would ludicrous at best.

The georgian emissary bows to the Caliph first, then to the representative of the Great Seljuks, before returning seat.

    Jerusalen's representative

    Very well.

We pledge to build no churches in any captured city that has no catholic peoples, and will abstain from building any religious buildings until such time as a large percentage of the population has converted to Christianity through their own free will.

We also pledge that should Damascus be taken for the glory of christ, the Grand Mosque of Damascus shall not be plundered or spoilt.

However, we cannot deny our soldiers their spoils of war, so every city that is captured by our valiant forces will be sacked, and all those who resist executed. This pertains not only to the cities of Islam but to all our enemies, whether they be Catholic, Orthodox or miscellaneous.

This is as far as Jerusalem will bow to the Muslim hosts of this court. I trust that it is satisfactory?

With all due respect to your king, but the proposition of arguing over an island that both of us can hardly conisder taking in the next 20 years seems mostly futile. But tell your king that the Imam Sultan will leave Calula alone as a trading post to the east for your people if your king will in return leave Oman Suqutra. Is this acceptable?
