Hey everyone, I have a question. I've been agonizing over my faction choice for a while, mostly because I'm wierd and do that kind of thing before starting any game.
Given that we now have a pretty good spread in the western end of the map (ERE, Georgia, KOJ, Makuria), both center map factions taken (Abassids, Great Seljuks), but a rather sparse eastern end of the map (Rajputs and Ghorids only), does anyone think I should move to an eastern faction to balance things out a bit more? Maybe Ghandzis or Kwarezhm?

Go, go Ghazni. If you guys stick together I'm going to get smashed.
Welcome to the Org TheFlax, and welcome to the game!
I will update the first post later today when I test the savegame and find out where Georgia pops up in the turn order...
Does anyone know of anyone else who is likely to want to be involved?
If not we will start tonight (Australia time, in about 10 hours).
There is some discussion today in the other Org hotseats about exploits.
My rules in the first post do not specifically ban any exploits, as I believe that it is pointless to try to police something which it is impossible to police, and will lead to accusations and recriminations between players and a general "bad vibe man".
I will not be using the "merchant/fort" exploit, the "surround and destroy" exploit, with either agents or armies and I consider these things contrary to playing the game in good faith and in a sporting spirit.
However, I am open to the idea of changing my mind and trying to specifically ban things if there is general consent that this should be the approach.
Let me know what you think.

it's a global game ( ), but the GM and at least two of the players are in Australia / New Zealand..
not sure where our ERE gamestarter resides, so it might not set off like a rocket....

ok now I'm just tripleposting for the hell of it
Diplomacy will likely be undertaken by PM and simply formalised by the diplomats on the map (or not if you prefer to leave some of your arrangements private).
Feel free to start the negotiations.....now!
I have considered the idea of an IC council thread, but I think it's a bit ahistorical. I can't imagine the Sultans, Emirs etc. of the region sitting down in a UN-type arrangement with the Crusader states and haggling over borders and the presence of spies / merchants on their lands.
Perhaps we can think of a good IC reason for there to be one later, maybe to face the Mongol threat?
I'll reconsider if enough people want one now.

Also, I'm rather interested in an IC thread since I like to roleplay quite a bit, but as you said its not very historical. It would still be fun I think.
As for the exploits, I didn't know any existed... I guess that makes me quite the noob.
Almost forgot, Welcome to the Org, The Flax!
I don't know all of the exploits myself, but there are a few common ones. You can ensure that a defeated army's survivors are instakilled by surrounding their unit on the campaign map before bringing them to battle, but since we are playing out the battles I doubt that one will come into play (much easier to just nab all the routers during the battle). This works on agents as well You can also stack a ton of merchants on one resource by placing a fort or army on it and sticking teh merchants in it.
Those are the main ones I can think of, at least that can have a big effect on the game. Jihads are hard to come by in BC, so I doubt that one will be used.

Sorry to double post, but I've been thinking (smell the smoke? ). A Council thread might be a bit unrealeastic (I suppose separate Christian and Muslim ones could be set up, if anyone wanted) but we could still have a Stories thread for roleplaying. It's worked well for the Teutonic and, even more so, the Crusade games.

A story thread is a good idea - I will start one with an introductory post and we can update it a few turns behind to keep things secret.

Sure - what I was doing in the Britannia story thread (before we all stopped posting in it), was pick up on little vignettes of action that had happened in my turn and make a story out of that.
For example, when Derry went rebel I wrote a little story about a meeting between an agent of King Brian and a local gang leader that turned sour...
I think the story thread should be a free thread for players to write IC about the game, in whatever style and form they like.
I'm still considering the idea of a council thread - maybe if the players accept the notion of the Abbasid Caliph as an honest broker and mediator in disputes between Islamic and non-Islamic nations, we could have the thread represent the court of the Caliph?
What does everyone think?

Ahistorical as it may be, I'd be pro-Council thread, or even just something like the Imperial Message thread from KOTR during the Cataclysm where people can make announcements.

I think we need somewhere to make our announcments. Even if it's not a "council" like in the other hotseats and is more like a story thread or even just a metaphoric notice-board where factions pin their announcments, I think we should have one.
"Okay, here come the cavalry, get your swords out lads!" - the Captain details his orders to the pikemen
Um, I hope it's not too late but is there anything special I need to do to get my BC ready for the hotseat?

In hotseats only the guy setting up the game has to change any files.
I wonder, are we using all of the fixes though?

I have installed the fixes in the 1.05 patch thread (link in the first post of this thread).
I would encourage everyone to do the same before we start - sorry if I wasn't clear about that at first.

Siege weapon one as well? I always thought that one was rather odd, since the point of making siege weapons harder to recruit was to prevent the AI from overhiring, I think.

yep - let me know, all, if that's a problem
I think the motivation was also based on historical realism - as the team put it these types of siege weapons were rarely used on the battlefield in engagements at the time, and ideally you'd only be able to build them in a siege situation. Given that isn't possible in this game engine, they have decided to restrict their recruitment area - then, I think, they decided it had been restricted too much and the fix is to correct that.
Again, apologies if this is a hassle for anyone but we need to have the same game version before we start.
I'll pm TheLemongate individually to make sure he has the fixes installed before we start tonight.
