Playing as Makedonia and confused about Gov types and MICs?
Here is a little guide where to recruit which unit depending on the
gov type. (n) means native, (l) is local.
note 1:
The non-faction units list is not complete as i concentrated on the most "interesting" n.-f. units available in cities that are necessary for the victory conditions.
note 2:
The stats of non-faction units differ from custom battles because i had a black
smith in every town and gov types 3 and 4 give an +1 Experience
bonus. For stats like lethality, mass and secondary weapon please
have a look at export_descr_unit.txt.![]()
note 3:
For the recruitment of elite faction units (e.g. Agyraspidai) keep in
mind that you need "Macedons" for them. It seems that this does not quite
match the Homeland resource, as I was able to recruit more elite
faction units in Seleukeia (poss. gov type 2) then in Serdike (poss. gov type 1).
Please correct me if i´m wrong.
note 4: For the case you dont know how the gov type/Mic systems works:
- Gov type 1: (n) max Mic level 5, (l) max Mic level 2
- Gov type 2: (n) max Mic level 4, (l) max Mic level 3
- Gov type 3: (n) max Mic level 3, (l) max Mic level 4
- Gov type 4: (n) max Mic level 2, (l) max Mic level 5
General advice:
- There will be lots of spawning rebels in your game. Use them.
Recruit 2-3 hypaspistai and 1 hetairoi, take one of your promising young generals and hunt them down. As soon as they have 1 or 2 silver chevrons incorporate them in your fighting stacks.- Build an Acadamy in your capital as soon as possible and "educate" your 16 year olds there. If you´re lucky they will get the Tutor-ancillary and good traits.
- Ally with the Getai and give them a regular tribute (100 or 200 mnai/20 turns) as a gift.
My alliance lasted 60 years though they bordered my territory for about 55 years.

Update:
Here is something for the arm-chair general in all of us
(complain, critize and call me an idiot as much as you want)
My makedonia strategy (basically Hammer&Anvil) and army composition:
First stage of battle
The Agyraspidai are the center of the battle line, the Hysteroi Pezhetaroi protect their right flank. Thureophoroi do what they are supposed to do and guard the vulnerable sides of the phalanx. The Hypaspistai function as reserve for the case that the AI does weird things.
Others:
Hetaroi: One of the most important units and the "hammer".
Agrianikoi Pelekephoroi: Very capable assault infantry. I use them to kill medium infantry on the enemy´s flank or as ambush unit in long grass and woods.
Prodromoi: "Light" cavalry, perfectly suited to drive of skirmishers and hunt down routing enemies. Could be replaced by the Thraikioi Prodromoi though.
Thraikioi Peltastai: Far more than skirmishers. They´re a real threat to any medium infantry as they have nice attack/defence stats and are able to hold the line against heavy infantry, too (but send help ASAP).
Horse Archers: Skuda Baexdzhyntae (light) or Skuda Fat Aexsdzhytae (medium), a matter of taste. I prefer the light ones as they have slightly better missile/defense stats and spears as secondary weapons.
Really versatile units but make sure to attack the enemy from the left (non-shield side) or from behind. Never let them engage in melee against an organized infantry unit!
The alternative would be Creten Archers but they cost roughly the same
and why have foot archers while you can have horse archers instead?
Second stage
The Thracians attack the left flank. If they have problems, do a mini hammer&anvil with the hetaroi. As soon as the enemy routs send the cav to the right flank and help the thureophoroi and Hysteroi Pezhetaroi. Use the Agrians and the Prodromoi against units that are trying to get behind your lines. Maybe exploit gaps in the enemy´s formation with the Hypaspistai.
Third stage
Time for the horse archers. Move behind the battle line and get rid of the arrows! Of course one could have used them way earlier (as bait for cavalry, generals or to "carrhae" the enemy), but they´re really effective if used this way and in a perfect position to kill routing units once they depleted their ammo.
Now make a killing zone of the battlefield. Attack the battle line from behind with the Hetaroi and destroy any units that are still fighting with your phalanx.
Here are some possible replacements for the units i´m using atm (all these are recruitable around the Mak starting territory).
For the Thracian Skirmishers/Thureophoroi:
Galatikoi Kuarothoroi: very nice heavy infantry, but less mobile.
Samnite Heavy Infantry: same as above.
Taxeis Triballoi: very cheap skirmisher unit, decent stats.
For the Horse Archers:
Creten Archers: Good stats, but a bit expensive.
Toxotai: worthless, imho.
Sphendonetai (slingers, all factions): very cheap and once they have 3 or 4 chevrons pretty effective (amour piercing!)
Oh, maybe add some Gesetae mercenaries to your army
