Manual Addendum top

1. Saving games

Your progress can be saved in one of three ways:

2. Default General - Creating armies

When creating a new army and selecting your units for a multiplayer or custom battle, the FIRST unit you select will be your Taisho or General on the battlefield. Choose wisely.

3. Battle time limits

There is now a time limit option for custom battles - it can be set to No limit or between 5 mins and 60 mins in 5 minute increments.

4. Merging Units

You can merge two or more units that have less than the maximum number of troops into one larger unit, but this will not succeed if the two (or more) units combine to exceed the maximum unit size. eg. for the default 60 troop unit, merging two units of 50 and 10 troops will merge to 60, 35 and 40 will not.
On the strategy map, select the unit icon from the review panel and drop it onto another unit on the review panel.

5. Arquebusiers, Musketeers and rain and snow

Arquebusiers and Musketeers cannot fire their weapons on the battlefield while it is raining or snowing. If by chance the weather changes, and it stops either snowing or raining, they will be able to operate their weapons.

6. Production queue ordering

You can change the order of any unit or building in the production queue parchment by simply clicking on it and dragging it to the desired position in the queue. If you drag the unit or building and drop it outside of the production queue, its production will be cancelled - same as right-clicking it.

7. Walking and running

CTRL + R does not toggle walk/run as is stated in the gameplay manual.

8. Waypoints

You can see your units waypoints by holding down the shift key. The manual incorrectly states that holding the space bar does the same. This only shows your units' final position.

9. Mouselook in Software mode

Mouselook does not work when running the game in software mode.

10. Time compression in multiplayer games

In order to speed up time during a multiplayer game, all users must collectively increase the time compression slider.

11. Internet connections and multiplayer games

There is now an option in the Multiplyer Menu screen that allows you to use an existing internet connection rather than using a dial up adapter (modem). Check this box if you connect to the internet using your LAN or cable modem or if you have a third party dial up connection such as AOL, Compuserve etc. NOTE: If you normally use a third party dial up connection (AOL, Compuserve etc), make sure you have connected to the internet before starting Shogun Total War. DO NOT check this box if you aren't already connected to the internet.

Known Issues top

Known in-game sound and video problems.

The game requires you to have Windows Media Player installed. Some machines running older copies of Windows 95 may not have a recent version of Media Player. This may result in problems when playing back sounds or animations. If you experience such a problem, please download the latest version from http://www.microsoft.com/.

Known Video Card Problems.

Video monitor settings may need to be adjusted after installing the Microsoft DirectX video drivers. If you screen distorts, or is shifted horizontally or vertically, you can return it to normal by adjusting the controls on your monitor.

Most video display problems can be corrected by installing the latest drivers for your particular card. Please consult your video card documentation for details on how to get the latest drivers for your card.

Users with ALI chipset based motherboards may experience video or system difficulties with certain video cards under Windows 95, specifically with the Diamond Viper 770 Ultra and the 3Dfx Voodoo 3 (2000, 3000, & 3500). Running this chipset on Windows 95 is not recommended.

3DLabs Permedia 2 users - If you experience problems displaying videos or running the game, we recommend updating to the latest reference driver for the 3DLabs Permedia 2 chipset.

nVidia video card users - We do not recommend that you use the 5.13 drivers if you are running an nVidia TNT type video card (TNT1, TNT2, TNT 2 Ultra and GeForce).

Known Sound Card Problems.

Most sound card problems can be corrected by installing the latest drivers for your particular card. Please consult your sound card documentation for details on how to get the latest drivers.

Known DirectX Problems

If another application is using the sound card while trying to install or run the game, a "DXSound Error" will appear. If this error occurs, please close all applications and try again.

Virtual Memory Settings

Shogun - Total War may need to use more RAM than is present on your system. Windows 95/98 automatically takes care of this by using what is known as "Virtual Memory" - which uses space on your hard disk to simulate the memory it needs and swaps data back and forth from your hard disk as required. Windows 95/98 allows you to manually set the amount of hard drive space it uses for Virtual Memory: WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DO NOT DO THIS! To let Windows 95/98 manage the Virtual Memory, go to the Windows 95/98 start menu, select ‘settings\control panel’, then double-click ‘system’, click ‘performance\virtual memory’ and then select ‘Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings. (Recommended)’

Known System RAM problems

Certain systems contain video cards that use system memory as video memory. With these systems, it is possible that Shogun - Total War will not run properly if you have only 32MB of memory. Since the video card uses system memory, usually 4MB or 8MB, on 32MB machines there is not enough memory left to run the game. In order for Shogun -Total War to run properly you will need to increase your system memory or use a video card with dedicated video RAM.

AutoPlay

If your CD does not AutoPlay when inserted in the drive, this feature may be disabled on your system. To Enable AutoPlay, right click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties' then 'Device Manager'. Click the + next to CDROM in the list of devices. Select the CD-ROM drive you are using to play the game from the expanded list and click 'Properties'. Select 'Settings' and check the 'Auto insert notification' box.

16 bit CD-ROM drivers

Shogun - Total War may fail to start if there is a 16 bit CD-ROM driver loaded from the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. If you have references to MSCDEX or equivalent drivers then try removing them from your autoexec.bat and config.sys files. Windows 95/98 does not generally need these drivers to work and in most cases will actually perform better without them.

CD-Changers and Multi-Drivers

Shogun - Total War does not support multiple CD-ROM drives or CD-changers and assumes that you only have one CD-ROM drive. If you have more than one CD-ROM drive, you should insert the Shogun - Total War CD in the first CD drive letter. For example, if you have CD drives E:, F: and G:, your Shogun - Total War CD should be inserted into the E: drive.

Choppy movie performance

If you find that the movie performance is choppy or jerky, try reducing the Windows 95/98 CD caching by going to Start/Settings/Control Panel and double-clicking the System applet. In the System Properties dialog, click the Performance tab and then click the File System button. From the File System Properties dialog, click the CD-ROM tab and note the Supplemental Cache Size setting (so that you can reset the cache size if need be). Now set the Supplemental Cache Size to Small. This should have a marked effect on movie performance.

Power Saving Modes

It is possible that your computer loses connection to your ISP due to long periods of inactivity. Sometimes this is caused by the sleep mode in your "Power Saving" options. This can cause problems during game play or when connected to EA PLAY. To avoid any problems please disable your screen saver or power-saving modes when running the game.

Periodic Slowdowns

If periodic slowdowns occur while playing Shogun - Total War and the CD is not being accessed please ensure that there are no other applications running during your game session. This includes anti-virus software.

Task Switching

Whilst you can task switch from Shogun:Total War to other Windows applications by pressing ALT+TAB, it is not recommended that you do this whilst the movies are playing or when the game is loading. If you do minimise Shogun Total War, it is not recommended that you double-click on the Shogun Total War button on the Windows Task Bar. This button should be single left-clicked only to restore the game.

If you are running Windows 95 you may experience a problem with Windows 95 DynaRes. If this happens we recommend that you do not ALT+TAB to other applications from Shogun - Total War.

CTRL+ALT+DEL and other things you should avoid

Pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL isn't advisable whilst the game is running. Similarly, it is unadvisable to run more than one copy of Shogun:Total War at any one time as this will affect the game's performance. Do not remove the CD from the drive whilst it is being accessed (during intro, movies, animations etc).

Logitech control pad software

The Logitech controller software can cause problems when running Shogun:Total War. Disable this from the System Tray before running the game for best results.

Monitor setup and testing display modes

If your monitor isn't correctly set up in the Windows control panel, you may experience problems when trying to select game resolutions that the monitor can't support - even if your video card can. Make sure you either have your monitor set up correctly or you use the "Test display mode" button in the OPTIONS>VIDEO menu in Shogun:Total War. If you do not see the Shogun Total War mask logo then that resolution isn't supported and you should choose another.

Multiplayer

Changing sides in a multiplayer game just before the army selection screen loads is unadvisable. This may cause unexpected results in the game.

Improving Performance top

General

  • Note that higher resolutions may cause slower gameplay. We suggest you adjust the detail levels in the Performance menu including the number of units on the battlefield.
  • Lowering the sound quality may also increase game performance. The default setting is medium.
  • It is advisable that you shut down all non-essential applications that may be running when you play Shogun - Total War.
  • If you make use of the Microsoft Office Toolbar, and it appears over the game screen when playing Shogun - Total War, you will have to disable it before playing.
  • There is a utility installed in most Windows systems (Findfast.exe) that will periodically run and catalog all of the Microsoft Office files on your hard drive. When it is doing this check, your computer's performance will be dramatically impaired. You may want to remove it or disable it when running Shogun - Total War.

    Network and Internet play

  • Decreasing the maximum number of units available on the HOST machine will set the max units for the clients also. Reduce the number of units on screen to improve game speed.
  • We don't recommend that there are no more than 4 players in an internet game to preserve the game speed.

    Tested Video Chipsets

The following list of video card chipsets have been tested and work with Shogun:Total War. For all these cards, you should ensure that you have the latest drivers available. If your card is not on this list it doesn't mean that it won't work.

  • 3DFX Voodoo 2
  • 3DFX Voodoo 3
  • 3DFX Voodoo Rush
  • 3DFX Banshee
  • Matrox G200
  • Matrox G400
  • nVidia Riva TNT
  • nVidia Riva TNT 2
  • nVidia GeForce 256
  • ATI Rage 128
  • Rendition 2100/2200
  • Intel I740

    8 bit textures

  • If your 3D video card supports it, this option will be checked as default in the Video menu. Uncheck this option to improve game performance at the expense of unit detail. Some cards may experience 'boxes' around the units the first time this is done. If you exit the game and re-start, this will not occur.
  • Some video cards such as the Matrox G400 and Permedia 2 will incorrectly report supporting 8bit textures. If any graphical corruptions such as those described above occur, un-check this option in the Performance menu.

    Troubleshooting/FAQ top

    Q. I use America On-Line, Compuserve and other third party diallers to connect to the internet, how do I play Shogun Total War online with these services?

    A. You will firstly need to connect to your ISP using their dialling software. Then launch the game and check the box that states "use existing internet connection". Then press the 'Play on EA|Play to connect to the Shogun Total War chat server.
Please note that if you access the internet from within a firewall or via a proxy server, you may not be able to host a game but should have no problems joining a game.

    Q. I have internet access through my LAN and I also have a dial-up adapter (modem) installed on my computer. How can I get the game to use my LAN connection instead of my dial-up adapter?

    A. You will need to check the box in the multiplayer menu screen that states "use existing internet connection". You will need to make sure that you are dialled in to your ISP before attempting to connect.
Please note that if you access the internet from within a firewall or via a proxy server, you may not be able to host a game but should have no problems joining a game.

    Q. I sometimes don't get sound during the throne room animation or during other animations in the game.

    A. It is advisable that you update your copy of Windows Media Player. The most current version can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/

    Q. When I run the game in software mode, the camera moves *very* slowly and my framerate is poor when on the battlefield.

    A. Do not use the arrow keys to control the camera in software mode. The mouse is a much better and quicker way to navigate the battlefield. In hardware mode, you can also hold down the shift key to make the camera move more quickly.
