Does anyone else play this game? My character's name is Dalmatius, if anyone wants to add me to friends list. You only pay once your entire lifetime to play, although you can buy ingame currency through the VERM service. I'm currently the King of Regnum Pontii.

Here is a link to the game's homepage, so that non-players can read about Roma Victor:

You can learn more about my kingdom here:

Please post your comments on this game, and discuss it!

Best MMORPG ever in my opinion, based on the era I like most. http://www.roma-victor.com/community/bb/images/smiles/icon_smile

I visited it's forums for several months before it had even been released (it was in beta testing). I left it alone since the developers were swaying towards the "monthly fee" policy and possibly even worse the "pay real cash for play cash" policy. But now that I look into it now, it seems to have lost that image. Which is good.

Edit: Hmm, now that I look into it more, it seems it hasn't changed at all. *sighs* :shame:

Second Life has a similar setup with exchanging real money for in game money. You can also purchase a lot of property for $9.95 when you start your account I believe.

Reminds me of that one MMO that was supposed to be a Roman Empire set in the future... anyone know what happened to it??

Got cancelled quite some time ago I'm afraid.
As for RV, speaking as a beta tester of this game and a person that was stupid enough to actually buy an account, this game is horrible.
It's one of those overly complicated, hair pulling games, not mention buggy as hell.
That it takes a PhD in engineering in order to build a simple mudhut is bad enough but that fact that it requires so much material makes it even worse.
The money you have at the start won't be enough(it isn't even enough to have fun with in the game) to buy the stuff you need to build a hut so buying in-game money is your only option.
So lets say you spent 2 days building your hut(which should make it around 20-30% complete by the way) you come back to the game(since after all it's just a game and you have to sleep) and find that your soon-to-be mudhut is gone.
What happened ??
It got destroyed by the "weather" meaning you lost everything, the material that you used can't be re-used. So if you want a hut to live in, then you guessed it, you have to start all over and yes you guessed it, buy even more in-game money.
This is just one of many issues that will make one of your veins pop.
Another thingy is that before the beta, the online community was quite big.
Alot of guilds being made and alot of people was attracted to the idea of freedom that this game promised.
Once the open-beta came, everyone left.
Not that anyone should blame them. Being apart of a beta team is nice but then you find out that the devs refuse to listen to you kinda makes you wonder why they had a beta in the first place.

Game looks awesome, but is the only way to get in-game money to buy it with real money?

So, I take it that Roma Victor is as bad as it was at the opening?

Yeah, I played it when it opened, for 30 absurd minutes, trying to figure out how to give a scroll to some guy, completely failing because the interface was grotesquely clunky, then wandering outside only to be greeted with the ugliest landscape I have ever seen. I'm not exaggerating about that last one; I've seen much better interactive landscapes in an online game that came out in 2002 or so (WW2 online. Good game, actually... much more worth playing than this junk-heap.)

So, yeah... unusable UI, late-90's style graphics, and generally impossible gameplay.

Pretty much yeah.
Only difference is that they added collision detection.
