View Full Version : This really p\'d me off! is it fixed in the patch?
Playing as
English, Normal, early. year 1238
I own a great deal of europe. i have wiped out the french, almost killed of the germans and danish, and am also working on the poles.
i have 2 large armies in defence on the borders of spain where the alomhad are massing superior numbers.
I have owned all of france for around 60 years, each land is garrasoned by 240 miltia. when sudden the french decide to reappear. 3 large stacks in 3 different lands, each army comprising of uber units which i do not have a chance against! the result, i lose most of france with a load of french armies breathing down my neck! all of the time and effort i have put in has gone to waste!
IS THERE ANYWAY TO TURN OF REAPPEARING FACTIONS!!!
Somebody somewhere mentioned that reappearing faction (re-fac) occurs when prov's loyalty is below 120% (unlike mass-rebel).
I've had success in preventing re-fac by bumping up provinces with extra garrisons to get loyalty > 120 when I knew it was about to happen (reload from prev turn savegame ^_^).
You also might want to eliminate any rebel territories bordering your provs as they tend to join a re-fac.
all loyalty is above 150
no rebel areas nearby either 8(

Try garrisoning better units and disbanding the weak ones. Militia and peasants don't have as good of an effect on morale as quality units do. Also, if a revolt does happen you will have the proper units to defend with. Late in the games when my armies are spread out I never have any cheap troops as garrisons unless its a lord or some kick ass general i didn't have the heart to disband.
but will this stop a faction re appearing once it has been wiped out?

I don't know if it applies to your situation, but I have triggered the re-emergence of a faction with a 'spy hit squad'...
I think it is just a rare type of revolution..
What I have seen is Factions turning up in odd places..
In my campaign the Italians have successfull re-emerged (ie lasted more than 5 years..) in the middle of Spain....??
They English keep trying, they must a re-emerged 6 times now... (guess the English royals were into sowing their wild oats, far and wide.. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif)
Anyway, I think thing would be boring without it... You are the evil emperor, the overlord how is trying to dominate the freelands of europe... and the quote the Life of Brian 'What did the Romans ever do for us?'..
No matter what you do, everyone isn't going to like you...
Personally I take the loyalty rating to be the opinions of the nobles/rulers of a province, not the peasants... Things tend to make more sense that way..
I would like to know how Happiness comes into the equation... and negative vices for happiness..
This usually happens to me if the king is somehow cut off from the lands - the loyalty plummets and factions reappear.
I've heard that this can happen if your king is in battle or if the sea-route between him and central europe is blockaded.
Maybe this explains it?

its not so much as them coming back,
but when they come back with super units which arent availble to my faction, or the old french faction when i conquered it.
will the units be less powerful in the patch?

I think the patch gives you the option to allow factions to re-emerge as they do now, for those who enjoy the challange, or only as peasent type revolts with a few nobles, which would be more realisitc.
There has been a lot of criticism of factions reappearing packed full of either units they couldn't build or artillary. Hopefully the patch will sort all of this.
The strategy guide alludes to a beaten faction always reappearing at least once. IMO, the way they reappear is stupid. Where in the hell do the crack troops come from? I hope the patch addresses this.

remember to use spys.
I put at least 1 spy, 1 bishop, and one assassin in every province.
remember churches help happiness too.

I've got very lucky in my current game. I surrounded the French king in Ile de France with only a few crossbow men and peasants (3 of each if I remember correctly, that is 3 men in each http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif). I assaulted and threw every unit I had on the battle field at him. I captured the bugger (but only after the bugger took out single handedly 20-30 of my troops). He had been caught once before so they couldn't pay the ransom, king was executed, had no heirs, end of French. The thing was, they still held Toulouse and their forces became rebels. My attempt to bribe them failed and I didn't bother with taking the provence (Germans were making a bid for Flanders), now every time the French reappear, they reappear in Toulouse which makes the re-appearance very hassle free for me at least. Luckily the first assasin I built just happened to be Guy of Guisbourne so a quick knife in the back should solve the French problem.
From the list of changes:
"55) Rebellions no longer produce troops that require technology that the faction in question does not possess. If the player prefers the old style rebels this can be turned off with the command switch -old_rebels"

Only one bishop? When playing as the Byzantines, I get Catholic bishops and Muslim Amins popping in to convert my population. I've got three Orthodox bishops and six Orthodox priests, as well as a church, monastery, reliquary, and cathedral, and still the population's religion changes as much as 8% per turn. I assassinate as many religious leaders as possible, but it takes a while to stamp out that last 1 - 2% of religious freedom....
nah.. just bring a couple of Cardinals to Egypt and convert the whole land.

Sounds pretty fierce - playing HRE on normal have had to do this along border with Alomahds, I mean former France - about 3 catholic bishops in Provence, Burgundy.
Usually don't worry about the last 1-2% though as long as its not getting out of hand.
Bet your assassins get killed off like mine a lot when their targets port out and they get dragged along.
I've had some weird experiences with faction re-emergence.
Playing Almohad Normal, Early I tried very hard not to eliminate any factions but to preserve them in single weak provinces instead.
Unfortunately, this is not always possible and the Spanish King insisted on attacking me with a really weak army and fighting to the death effectively eliminating himself.
The weird thing was that expecting him to re-emerge with a new army in Castile or nearby I kept my armies in Spain on high alert only to find the Spanish re-appear in the middle of the Russian Steppes and start mixing it with the Golden Horde.
One thing I don't like about rebelions and the like is the strange mix of troops.
I have seen peasant revolts consisting of nothing but catapults. A recent Muslim revolt had nothing but black powder weapons and several enemy revolts have contained troops which were top of the range elite units that their real owners could not have hoped to produce.
I certainly think some tuning is needed in that area to produce a more sensible army composition.

Hi all,
Yep, Ive had that happen to me in every game. The French reappear with an army I can only defeat by recalling all my srmies from the frontline. In the last game they had 14 royal knights units in one province, and super elite infantry in the next one too.
Its a bit rediculous. I even had priests and units stationed in the province but still they come back.
I think it is good that these things happen but it should be on a much realistic scale.

Had the experience also of really elite stuff coming back with a faction re-emergence. Took Rome twice and had mass armies of feudal/royal knights come back, so I left them Rome the following time, but then Sicily wiped them out and they came back in Papal States-my province, put that down and so far Sicily has left Rome alone, and its left me alone, but can't make peace with them even with 3-star emissary.
Put the Danes down earlier and they've never come back.
Left Poles with Volhynia as an effective buffer between me and Russians, deterent to Eygptians. Every once in a while they re-attack Poland and I soundly beat them.
The guide even suggests not wiping someone out totally.
Have also noticed the Mongol Siege Army Horde, they seem to die off too quickly as a result, so far they've been just a minor nuiscance the two times they've showed up.
Didz: want to see your pink flower icon again, maybe the mods will accomodate you? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Somehow think it even more appropriate to this age than for STW.
