View Full Version : Lorica Segmentata?

pezhetairoi

Why aren't the Romans wearing the lorica segmetata as the RTW game does? All sources show they are wearing it! Asterix shows all the Roman soldiers in Julius Caesar's era also wearing it. The lorica segmetata is the best armour! According to the articles and books i read like Dorling Kindersley's 'ROMANS' eyewitness book says the lorica segmetata was cheap and easy to produce! Why does the EB team not include it? It is not historically reaslistic! :furious3: :furious3: :wall: :wall: :furious3: :furious3: :dizzy2: :dizzy2: :dizzy2: :whip: :whip:

...sorry, I just had to do it. XD We didn't have an LS thread for March yet, so I thought I'd just try my hand at one, since it seems so fun there's one every month. :clown:

BELOVED FORUM THREADS NOW CONFIRMED AS ENDANGERED. POSSIBLY EXTINCT.

Let's not all forget that, many months ago, there flourished a great species of posts that, because of the high value of its flame-bait (a sad thing in indeed) may well have become extinct through obscurity. Due the recent rarity of the sightings of such proud threads, the species is feared to be extinct amongst many forum-thropologists. This tragic thread species I'm talking about is the now-famous 'EB Team has Underpowered Romans' thread. Even the thread sub-species of '(Insert civilization name here) is overpowered' has become elusive, leading to mounting fears that it, too, may well be heading down the road of never being seen again.

This should be of the greatest concern to the forums GreenusPax, yet no-one seems to care, a conspiracy is perhaps afoot here...?

I believe that this has already been proven. The thing, is, I haven't had time to even start EB for the last 3 weeks, yet alone play a decent game. Maybe it's the withdrawal symptoms? If this is the case, then I can sue EB for not including a warning!

General Appo

I wouldn´t do that if I were you. Just so you know, the EB team has tracked your IP and through some other dubiously legal methods have find out your adress plus some other info about you, but that doesn´t need to concern you. What should concern you is that any attempts to sabotage EB is going to result in a visit by a team of EBF´s (EB Fanatics) that will "convince" you to stop your sabotage attempts. Trust me, as co-coordinator of the EBF´s teams and MofAC (Master of the Arcani Order (basically the information gathering and silent removal of disturbing persons section of the EBF´s)) , I know how traumatic such a visit can be, so please don´t make any such attempts. Just a note on the leather for anyone wondering:

It has no basis in reality, only appears on Trajan's collumn and would be fairly pointless because the Romans wore a padded leather/linin vest under their armour anyway.

BTW, over at RAT there was a thread not too long ago about the leather LS... I read it, but wasn't convinced... I don't think too many other folks were either...

As to LS (the METAL kind) I just assume since the game auto-destructs in AD 14 y'all decided not to bother!! I mean AFAIK, the earliest recovered fragments securely dated come from the Clades Variana in AD 9, and despite somebody (anybody) wishing that "Colt Brothers" :laugh4: in downtown Lugodunum (sp?) had been cranking sets out for years (very doubtful), its hard to imagine the entire army on the Rhine having it by AD 9, never mind AD 14...

Now, if in EB 2 (or 2.x) y'all extend the span of the game out to say about AD 211, then I would say, "let's talk!" :idea2:

It was a real hoot reading this thread. Having only joined a few weeks ago, I guess some poor soul must have wanted his Camillan troops (or Polybian anyway) in LS... Poor guy (gal?). :smash:

Most people who come to EB have already played R:TW vanilla, and realize that the Romans did not use LS for most of their pre-imperial history. However, I do recall some posters who reported that something was wrong with the Imperial legionaries, as they did not wear LS.

It is uniquely Roman and easily recognizable. Most basic history books and almost all of popular culture features Roman soldiers wearing it. For many people it is the quintessential Roman armour, and a game about Romans would not be complete without it.

It's a Latin thing, Anno Domini means "In the Year of Our LORD" So "AD 14" but today 14 AD is acceptable and preffered because the original meaning is superceded by convenience of type-setting.

We're supposed to use CE/BCE but if I was a non Christian I would find that pretty offensive because it suggests the official birth of Christ is a universally significant and non-religious event, which it isn't.

Tiberius Nero
03-12-2008, 05:48
It smells like PC BS at first, but the rationale of calling it "Common Era" is that Jesus is unlikely to have been born at 1 AD (various arguments about chronology, don't remember), so it is inaccurate to call his birth the turning point of our counting; but since that counting is now entrenched in popular consciousness and we are unlikely to establish with any certainty the accurate date, and even if we did, no way would we start counting again and call our year 2005 AD or sth (as it more accurately is), so just substitute the historically loaded AD for the neutral/arbitrary CE/BCE, which admits honestly that our counting is conventional and not based on an established event happening at an established time.

Since even non Christians use the same way of chronology (along with whatever systems they have pertaining to their cultures/religions) "Common Era" is an accurate way of saying it; it is not supposed to be offensive because it does not purport to take Jesus' birth as a starting point of our Common Era. So imo there is nothing PC about CE, nor offensive to non Christians, what is behind this whole business is a dispute in chronology about Jesus' birth.

Ibrahim

Or if I had half a brain, I'd think it's more of a custom to use that rather than any religious statement, and to change it on those grounds would be PC bullshit.

exactly....

and as for it being latin, shock horror, i was not aware of that! but given that it is latin that does not actually make any difference as the the pre- or post-number position, as, as we all know, latin sentence structure is rarely bothered by word order or convention in that way.....even such solid rules as "verb comes last" (and that's a 7year old's beginner introduction to latin rule) don't really hold with any regularity.....so yeah....

Ah yes, and answer only General Appo could have given. It's only missing the word 'quietly'. XD

The Arcani doesn´t do things quitely, that for Tacitus and his disciples.
When we want someone to... take a vacation, we simply rush at him, stab... I mean hug, him in the back and then runs away again. Quick, easy and funny, the way all things are supposed to be.
Though admitedly we sometimes uses imported throw-axes and cut of Brittish heads in lime (yes, lime the fruit) to the same means.
And sometimes we just go wild and ride my imported and pimped-out Egyptian Scythed Chariot drawn by 8 Flaming Pigs through the streets of Roma, you ought to see those Pleibs faces when they see us coming at them down a narrow alley with no escape routes.
